BS Mathematics (Effective from Fall 2014)

Programme Description

The BS in Mathematics program has been designed to develop analytical skills in the students on the
one hand and to prepare them for the modern job market on the other hand. The courses taught at the
SNS are aimed at providing the students with a wide mathematical background. Students wishing to
pursue careers in scientific research will conveniently gain admission to MS and PhD Programmes of
high profile universities. Those who choose other careers will benefit in their respective fields by the
skills gained at SNS.

BS Mathematics students at SNS attend courses from a wide range of mathematics: from
computational uid dynamics and numerical analysis on the computational side, to logic, topology and
functional analysis on the pure side. In addition, students take courses from natural sciences, social
sciences and humanities. One of the strong points of the curriculum offered here at SNS is the large
number of elective courses that students can take. From Semester VII, students will have the option to
join one of the following streams:

1. Computational Mathematics
Students who have interest in scientific computing, mathematical modeling and simulation of
nonlinear phenomena may opt this stream. In Semester VII and VIII, the department will offer
four courses from the list of elective courses for this stream.
2. Pure and Applied Mathematics
This stream is a blend of pure and applied mathematics courses. Students who have interest in
pure and applied mathematics may choose this stream. In Semester VII and VIII, the
department will offer four courses from the list of elective courses for this stream.
3. Mathematical Economics
Students who have a strong interest in economics and mathematics may opt this stream. This
stream will provide strong foundations in both mathematics and economics and will offer the
students both the intellectual and the quantitative skills to grapple with questions at the
interface of these two disciplines. In Semester VII and VIII, the department will offer four
courses from the list of elective courses for this stream.

BS Mathematics degree opens several exciting and lucrative avenues. Graduates are not only able to
pursue careers in higher education and research as MS. and PhD. scholars, but also get the skills that
are needed in modern industrial and financial markets. Globally, mathematicians are employed in
banks, stock markets, consultation firms and fields related to circuit design, cryptography, data mining
and computing. Holding a BS Mathematics degree from SNS will ensure that the graduates are well
prepared for a wide variety of jobs available in Pakistan and abroad.

Eligibility for admission: HSSC or equivalent with Mathematics.
Total Credit Hours: 134
