Assignment 2: Second Language Acquisition
1. What do you understand by the term affective factors? In not more than 300 of your own words summarize Krashens views on the role of affective factors in the learning of a second language.
Affective factors or known as The Affective Filter Hypothesis are the one of Krashens Theory which focus on learners emotional. There are three factors in affective factors consists of motivation, self-confidence and anxiety. Generally, affective factors act as problems that make learners slow in their learning process of second language. As we know, second language learners are divided into two categories, child and adult. Child are more easy to learn second language because they surround with people that keep motivate them and teach them naturally but adult always face problems like low self-esteem, low, confidence and high anxiety. All these problems can form a mental block that can prevents all the input from being used for acquisition. As we know, when learner nervous in language class there will be a filter that prevents the input from getting through. Thus, as a teacher who teach adult, teacher should make an effort to provide exposure for them so that easy for them to understand what they learn. Besides that, to overcome the anxiety and low self-esteem while learning, teacher can make the classroom anxiety-free and motivating the learners to make the learners feel comfortable. In conclusion, affective factor are the most problems that learners need to prevent because it will effect learning process in future and it also depends on learners emotional and environment
