argument, etc. many times to emphasi=e it,
especially when it has already been
mentioned or understood.

building, city, etc. with soldiers until the
people inside are forced to let you in e.g.

opinion that people have of

of criminals that steals from people,
especially one that attacks travelers!

person or thing that particularly annoys
you and that you do not like.

planning or doing something dishonest

food, money, etc. especially because you
cannot or do not want to pay for something

and usually a sloping back.

friendly in atmosphere or character!

you say or do, in order to keep something
secret or to avoid causing embarrassment
or diculty for somebody! tactful e.g. he
was always very discreet about his love

enquiries before you sign anything.

technical) independent of other things of
the same type! separate e.g. the organisms
can be divided into discrete categories.
52. discretion (noun) - the freedom or
power to decide what should be done in a
particular situation e.g. C$ll leave it up to
you to use your discretion or, how much to
tell terminally ill patients is left to the
discretion of the doctor.

according to the -udgement of a person in
authority about what is necessary in each
particular situation! not decided by rules
e.g. you may be eligible for a discretionary
grant for your university course.
54. e9tol (verb) - to praise
somebody:something very much e.g.
doctors often e9tol the virtues of eating
less fat or, she was e9tolled as a genius.
55. e9onerate (verb) - to ocially state
that somebody is not responsible for
something that they have been blamed for
e.g. the police report e9onerated Mewis
from all charges of corruption.
58. e9piate (verb) - to accept punishment
for something that you have done wrong in
order to show that you are sorry e.g. he
had a chance to confess and e9piate his
guilt.
51. atone (verb) - to act in a way that
shows you are sorry for doing something
wrong in the past! make amends e.g. to
atone for a crime.
50. e9pedite (verb) - to make a process
happen more quickly! speed up e.g. we
have developed rapid order processing to

useful or necessary for a particular
purpose, but not always fair or right e.g.
the disease was controlled by the simple
e9pedient of not allowing anyone to leave
the city.

design, etc. of a room or theatre that make
it good or bad for carrying sound e.g. the
