ROLE OF H2S ENGINEERS
ON ARRIVAL AT THE
FIELD LOCATION
TOPICS COVERED UNDER THIS PRESENTATION:
What are the activities that an H
2
S Engineer is expected to carry out
he is at the location?
The presentation aims to give a step by step check-list for an H2S
engineer to install and commission the H
2
S Detection and Protection
system on the field.
The areas that the H
2
S Engineer need to keep focus on to avoid any
delays in the installation and commissioning of the equipments
onboard the rig.
STEP BY STEP CHECKLIST FOR EFFECTIVE
INTALLATION & COMMISSION OF H2S SYSTEM:
The H
2
S Engineer should undergo the Rig Induction Training and
acquaint himself with the life boat muster stations, Station bills.
Report to the Company Man and OIM about his arrival on the
location.
Acquaint himself with the drilling operations currently undergoing
at the location and the zone where H
2
S is expected to be
encountered.
Check whether the H
2
S equipment (container) has arrived at the
location. If not, what is its ETA.
Get the POB List from the Radio Operator
In the event of the H
2
S container not being on location, the H
2
S
Engineer should use the time available to do the following things in
advance:
1. Conduct the survey of the rig.
2. Based on the survey of the rig, determine the placement of fixed point
sensors, strobes and siren on the rig.
3. Check with the Barge Engineer about the likely location of the container.
4. Based on the location of the container, plan the installation by:
Tracing the path of laying of cables to the JB and H.P Hoses from
the CCU to the ADB.
Placement of Cascade Racks on the rig in the absence CCU.
Laying of the L.P. Hose from the ADB to the Manifolds, etc
5. Prepare the Schematic diagram showing the rig layout and the placement
of sensors, cascade racks, strobes & sirens, ADBs, manifolds, etc.
6. On the basis of POB and the inventory of SCBAs, Work line units and
Escape sets, determine the requirement of SCBAs, SABAs on the field and
Escape sets required to be placed in the accommodation area.
7. Get the approvals from the base office and schematics and placements and
then discuss with the Company man and OIM on placements etc.
8. Discuss with the Company man on providing the H2S training PPT
presentation while waiting on equipment.
9. Look out for the bulk penetration routes, speak to the electrician on taking the
power supply from emergency generator for GDS system and B. A.
Compressor and possible source for Big blowers near Rig floor, main deck
areas.
Once the Container arrives at the location, the following needs to be
checked out:
1. Look out for any physical damages to the container. If any, report to office
with pictures if possible.
2. Verify the availability of all equipments in the container per the Inventory
available and fill the requisite ISO Form - H
2
S Package Verification
(Report for any discrepancies in the inventory)
3. Important Note: Before installation commences, look out for the Calibration
Gas Bottle in the container and check whether the Cal gas is available or
whether the concentration of H
2
S gas or the Quad Gas is still intact by
verifying with a Portable detector. Also check whether the Cal gas has got
expired.
(In the event the Cal Gas is not sufficient for calibration, inform the base
office to arrange for the same till the time you carry out your installation.)
4. Based on the schematic diagram prepared, place the equipments at the desired
location.
Check List:
1. Ensure that the cables and hoses laid do not cause obstruction for any rig
activity or access of pathways.
2. The hoses and cables are not tied with other cables or equipment which are
likely to be removed by other service companies/ rig personnel.
3. Look out whether there is a bulk head penetration for the cables and hoses to
be passed at the desired location.
4. In the case of RM block are available, check with the Rig Electrician if the
same can be utilized by us for our installation activities.
5. Conduct the Air Quality Test of the Air in the Cylinders and Compressor
air before filling the cylinders and prepare the Air Quality Report accordingly.
6. Once all the SCBAs, SABAs, Escape Sets and Portable detectors are
distributed in the location, fill their corresponding ISO forms.
Check List:
7. Once all the sensors are placed and commissioned at the desired location,
calibrate the sensors and fill the corresponding the ISO form for Calibration
of Fixed Point sensors and Portable Detectors.
8. Conduct the Cascade Leak test and lookout for any leakages near the fittings
of H.P. hoses.
9. Check if all the pressure gauges are functioning properly.
10. Test the Alarms and Strobe Lights for their functioning. (Note At the time of
testing of alarms and sensors, inform the Company Man, OIM, Barge Engineer
to have everyone addressed that the alarm should be only treated as a test and
no action is required by anyone.)
11. If Bug Blower is part of the package, check for its functioning and fill the ISO
form BUG BLOWER MAINTENANCE LOG.
12. Once all the breathing apparatus are distributed and the sensors are
commissioned and calibrated, have the INSTALLATION ACCEPTANCE
FORM signed by the Company Man and send the same to office.
