An indictment unsealed in federal court in Manhattan charged that Dino Bouterse, 40, was armed with a rocket launcher while smuggling coke into the U.S. BY DANIEL BEEKMAN / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 2013, 2:00 PM EDWARD TROON/AP Dino Bouterse, son of Suriname President Desi Bouterse, has been charged in a federal court in New York with smuggling cocaine into the United States. The son of an infamous South American president armed himself with a rocket launcher while smuggling cocaine into the United States, federal prosecutors said Friday. Dino Bouterse, 40, whose father, Desi Bouterse, was elected leader of Suriname in 2010 despite being a convicted drug trafficker and accused murderer, will be arraigned Friday afternoon in Manhattan federal court, authorities said. We dont have information regarding that matter, and my ambassador is not in, said Brian Dors, administrative officer at Surinames permanent mission in New York. The younger Bouterse conspired with an associate, Edmund Quincy Muntslag, also known as Blue, to import coke between December 2011 and this month, according to an indictment. Muntslag made arrangements on July 25 at an airport in Suriname to transport 10 kilograms of the drug, the indictment says. It was unclear Friday the exact route the drugs took to reach the U.S. But the indictment says the defendants distributed the coke knowing that such a substance would be imported into the United States from a place outside thereof, and into waters within a distance of 12 miles of the coast of the United States. Bouterse is charged with drug trafficking and brandishing arms in furtherance of that crime, while Muntslag is charged only with trafficking. They both face maximum sentences of up to life in prison if they are convicted, authorities said. The elder Bouterse, 62, was the military dictator of Suriname from 1980 to 1987 and has been accused of ordering his soldiers to execute 15 dissenters in 1982. He was convicted in absentia in the Netherlands in 1999 of trafficking 474 kilograms of cocaine and is reportedly still a wanted man in Europe. But he has remained free in his own country. Suriname, a small nation of under 600,000 people located on the Caribbean coast of South America, is a former Dutch colony. dbeekman@nydailynews.com POST A COMMENT OTHER STORIES Recommended by Missing American Yvonne Lee Baldellis remain...
