Unity plays a relatively important role in a country that its citizens are

from different races, cultures and religions such as Malaysia and it

needs the power of togetherness among the citizens in order to build
a society in harmony. As a result, there are many ways to improve
unity in diversity.

One of the ways is through sports. The children from different races
who play together when they are young will eventually stand together
as a nation when they become adults. We can see that sports can
improve unity in diversity as it unites people in a way that they can
support their own country sports team. For example, supporters from
Malaysia are willing to go to China to support our national badminton
player, Datuk Lee Chong Wei. Other than that, conducting cultural
activities through club activities is also a way to improve unity in
diversity. For example, the school can create clubs related to each
races culture in a community, such as Malay dance club, Chinese
Yoyo club and so on. Therefore, with the club activities that has
cultural element, it will surely encourage students to learn about the
differences in each races culture.

On the other hand, advertisement is also a way to improve unity in
diversity. Advertisement through radio, television and newspaper will
surely promote unity among the diversity of races as people can be
affected virtually to be united because of slogans about unity that
they heard and saw in radio and television. Besides, newspaper that
read by all the races should publish unity material that helps the
citizens to understand the importance and advantages when they are
united. For example, advertisement song such as the Satu Malaysia
will indirectly affect the citizens to understand the true meaning of this
song which is to create oneness in the nation and country.

In addition, programs that held can also improve unity in diversity as it
will attract people from different races to come and enjoy together in
the program. For example, the Kuching Festival which is a food
festivel where everyone can enjoy different kinds of food and one can
taste the food from other races whereas the Kite Festival in Bintulu,a
region of Sarawak will lure different races to exchange experiences in
kite flying with each other.

Through festive season, unity in diversity also can be improved
among the citizens. For example, in Malaysia, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is
the most significant celebration celebrated by the Muslims whereas
the Chinese New Year is celebrated by Chinese. Other than that, one
of the most interesting forms of cultural and racial interaction among
Malaysians during festive season is the open house where all
communities will invite their friends and neighbours from different
places to their house.

In the context of education, teachers must be open to their students
and put forth the effort to get to know their students inside and
outside of class. Teachers must be interested in their students, willing
to try new and different things and avoid taking things personally.
This openness will create communication in the class, which will
eventually develop into a classroom that is in learning and
understanding each other. Other than that, an important step in
teaching children to be comfortable with other culture is to encourage
and value their input in a small group of other students. When
grouping students, teachers should put students from different
backgrounds together and create projects for them to work together.
Thus, this will improve the unity in diversity among the students.

In conclusion, with all the means in improving unity in diversity, it is
vital for us as one of the citizens to know the importance of living
harmonically and peacefully with different races in order to build a
united country. As a result, we should take the opportunity to learn,
understandand and most importantly, to respect the differences
between you and I.
