The U.S. cash market was active again today as the harvest continues to ramp up and as rice that has to move
quickly looks for a home.There was also word from the Iraqi Grain Board yesterday that they will extend
bidding for their latest tender until next week in an effort to see if they can get more attractive offers.As of
today, offers could still be found near $13.00-$13.33 per cwt fob farm (about $287-$294 per ton) while bids
were unchanged around $13.00-$13.33 per cwt (about $287-$294 per ton) for October delivery and there were
reports of rice trading around $13.10-$13.30 per cwt (about $289-293 per ton) for prompt delivery.

Iraq Extends Bidding for 30,000 Tons of Rice to
Next Week

Iraq's Trade Ministry has extended bidding for 30,000 tons of rice, which was supposed to be held today
(September 26), to next week, according to Bloomberg.The Ministry invited international tenders to purchase
30,000 tons of rice from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Vietnam, Thailand and the U.S.All the bidders accepted
Iraq's extension of bidding, says Bloomberg.

Bangladesh Urged to Increase Use of Flood-Tolerant

Experts urged the Bangladesh government to increase use of flood-
tolerant rice varieties to boost rice production in the country by
overcoming extreme effects of climate change, according to local
sources.Representatives from farmers groups, Agriculture Ministry,
members of RDRS Bangladesh and journalists who participated in a
workshop on 'Climate Change and Cultivation of Flood Tolerant Rice
for Food Security' conducted by the Geneva-based relief and
rehabilitation organization RDRS recognized the importance of
flood-tolerant rice varieties in a country like Bangladesh.Some
speakers noted that Bangladesh farmers have already begun using
flood-tolerant varieties to increase production in the country.
Farmers' representatives noted that they were happy with the yields of between 4-5 tons per hectare provided by
flood-tolerant varieties such as BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BRRI dhan11, BINA dhan11 and BINA dhan 12.
They sustain submergence under floodwaters for up to 15-18 days, they said.However, earlier this month, a
NGO group slammed the government for not actively promoting the use of flood-tolerant rice varieties and
helping farmers from reducing losses from flash floods. It noted that though a number of flood-tolerant rice
varieties are available in the country, many farmers are not aware of the existence of such rice varieties and are
still succumbing to losses. The group identified the need to increase publicity of these varieties and encourage
farmers to make use of these varieties in every season to overcome losses.USDA estimates Bangladesh to
produce around 34.8 million tons of rice in MY 2014-15 (May - April), up about 1% from an estimated 34.59
million tons in MY 2013-14.

Italian University Collaborates with IRRI to
Develop Computer Models to Help Boost Rice

The University of Milan (UM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to develop
computer models that will aid researchers to understand rice-based cropping
systems and provide solutions to problems associated with rice-production and
thereby help farmers to boost production, according to a statement on the
University website.
The computer applications are said to provide information about rice area, crop health, expected yield, and crop
losses and guide researchers to improve rice varieties and production methods. The data can be used to train and
support farmers to use technology to increase rice productivity per hectare. The agreement aims at scientific and
technological exchanged between the UM and the IRRI.
The MOU also includes a license agreement to create an application, called PocketLAI, for Smartphone tablets
that helps farmers to measure leaf area index (LAI), which is used to measure crop growth. The application will
aid researchers in understanding pest injuries, their causes and remedies, and impart them to farmers. The
mobile technology developed by the Philippines Rice Information System (PRISM) will be used to run the
PocketLAI application, according to the UM website.
Information on rice area, crop health, expected yield, and crop losses through technological solutions will prove
significant in policy making and planning as well as to increase a countrys rice production, said the Head of the
IRRIs Geographic Information System unit and the PRISM project co-leader.

Futures Finish Week with Gains as Market Appears
to Put in Long-Term Low around $12.200 Earlier

Chicago rough rice futures for Nov delivery settled 11 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $12.815 per
cwt (about $283 per ton). Rough rice futures shot over 20 cents per cwt (about $4 per ton) higher immediately


upon the opening of floor trading this morning, but as the day wore on prices pulled back and traded mostly
sideways near previously mentioned resistance around $12.800-$12.820 per cwt (about $282-$283 per ton) for
the rest of the session. The market appears to have gotten a boost from a positive turn on the chart as prices
climbed off of Mondays low of $12.540 per cwt (about $276 per ton). Although the market was unable to hold
the sessions high they did manage to climb 12 cents per cwt (about $3 per ton) from Mondays opening price of
$12.695 per cwt (about $280 per ton). The other grains were mostly lower today with only wheat managing to
close a tick higher while soy and corn fell. Soybeans closed about 1.3% lower at $9.1025 per bushel; wheat
finished about 0.1% higher at $4.7425 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 0.9% lower at $3.2300 per
bushel.
U.S. stocks rose on Friday, rebounding after Wall Street's hardest knock in nearly two months, as the
government raised its estimate of economic growth in the second quarter and consumer sentiment rose in
September. Data from the Commerce Department had gross domestic product increasing at a revised 4.6%
annualized rate, up from the prior estimate of 4.2%, and in line with expectations. The Thomson
Reuters/University of Michigan's final read on consumer sentiment climbed to 84.6 in September from 82.5 the
month before. After a 105-point spike, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was more recently up 92.35 points, or
0.6%, at 17,038.15. The S&P 500 added 7.61 points, or 0.4%, to 1,973.60, with energy and technology the best
performing and utilities and health care and consumer staples the greatest laggards among its 10 major sectors.
The Nasdaq gained 17.98 points, or 0.4%, to 4,484.73. Gold is trading about 0.6% lower, crude oil is seen
trading about 1.2% higher, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.5% higher at about 1:00pm Chicago time.

Futures Surge as Technical Turn Bullish and Likely

Chicago rough rice futures for Nov delivery are seen 17 cents per cwt (about $4 per ton) higher at $12.875 per
cwt (about $284 per ton) during early floor trading in Chicago. The other grains are seen trading lower this
morning: soybeans are currently seen 0.8% lower, wheat is listed about 0.5% lower and corn is noted about
0.5% lower. U.S. stocks rose on Friday, rebounding after Wall Street's hardest knock in nearly two months, as


the government raised its estimate of economic growth in the second quarter and consumer sentiment rose in
September. The GDP reading come in at up 4.6%, higher than the previous annualized estimate of 4.2% and in
line with expectations.
Friday's session will also see the final reading of the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey for
September. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 81.49 points, or 0.5%, to 17,027.29. The S&P 500 added
5.93 points, or 0.3%, to 1,971.92, with consumer discretionary and technology the best performing and utilities
and telecommunications the laggards among its 10 major sectors. The Nasdaq gained 18.90 points, or 0.4%, to
4,485.65. Gold is currently trading about 0.7% lower, crude oil is seen trading about 0.6% higher, and the U.S.
dollar is currently trading about 0.4% higher at 9:30am Chicago time.

Oryza White Rice Index Index Dips on Lower
Asian Rice Export Quotes

The Oryza White Rice Index, a weighted average of global white rice export quotes, ended this week at about
$468 per ton, down about $5 per ton from a week ago, down about $9 per ton from a month ago and up about
$17 per ton from a year ago.
Thailand
Thailand 5% broken rice is today quoted at about $440 per ton, down about $5 per ton from a week and month
ago and up about $15 per ton from a year ago.
A study by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerces International Trade Studies Center calls for an
urgent revamp of the Thai rice sector in order to retain its share of the global rice market.
So far in 2014, Indonesia has imported about 425,000 tons of rice from Thailand and Vietnam in efforts to
build up stockpiles and stabilize domestic prices, according to Bloomberg.


The Bureau of Customs in the Philippines has seized about 1,250 tons of illegally imported Thai rice.
Separately, the Philippines lost about 87,576 tons of rice as a result of typhoons Lui and Mario, according to the
crop damage report released by the Philippines Department of Agriculture, which states that about 119,997
hectares of rice acreage were affected.
Vietnam
Vietnam 5% broken rice is today quoted at about $445 per ton, unchanged from a week ago, down about $5 per
ton from a month ago and up about $85 per ton from a year ago.


Paddy rice production for 2014 in Vietnam is estimated at around 45 million tons (about 28.125 million tons,
basis milled), according to Reuters. The Agriculture Ministry has attributed the increase to higher output from
the winter-spring crop. During January 1-September 18, Vietnam exported about 4.453 million tons of rice,
about 15% less than in the same period in 2013, according to the Vietnam Food Association.
The government has authorized the state-owned rice exporting companies Northern Food Corporation
(Vinafood 1) and Southern Food Corporation (Vinafood 2) to carry out rice export negotiations with
concentrated markets.
India
India 5% broken rice is today quoted at about $430 per ton, down about $10 per ton from a week ago, down
about $15 per ton from a month ago and up about $10 per ton from a year ago.
Planting for the kharif (main) rice crop (June-December) has reached about 37.36 million hectares as of
September 19, up slightly from the 37.315 million hectares planted during the same period last year, according
to the Indian Agriculture Ministry.
Indias rice exports to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) have increased about 23 times from about $78
million in 2009 to about $1.8 billion in 2013, according to the USDA.
Pakistan
Pakistan 5% broken rice is today quoted at about $410 per ton, down about $15 per ton from a week ago, down
about $30 per ton from a month ago and up about $20 per ton from a year ago.
In the first two months of FY 2014-15 (July-June), Pakistan has exported about 381,044 tons of rice, a decrease
of about 6% from the same period in FY 2013-14, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
Central & South America
Brazil 5% broken rice is today shown at about $610 per ton, unchanged from a week and a month ago and down
about $30 per ton from a year ago.
The Brazilian paddy rice index maintained by CEPEA reached around 36.86 real per 50 kilograms as of
September 22, 2014, down about 0.08% from around 36.89 real per 50 kilograms recorded on September 15,
2014. In terms of USD per ton, the index reached around $309 per ton on September 22, 2014, down about 5%
from around $325 per ton recorded on September 15, 2014.


Five percent broken rice from Uruguay and Argentina rice today shown at about $615 per ton, unchanged
from a week and a month ago and down about $5 per ton from a year ago.
U.S.
U.S. 4% broken rice is today shown at about $530 per ton, unchanged from a week ago, down about $10 per ton
from a month ago and down about $75 per ton from a year ago.
Chicago rough rice futures for November delivery didnt move much this week, opening at $12.695 per cwt
(about $280 per ton) on Monday and only reaching $12.765 (about $281 per ton) on Thursday before hitting a
high of $12.910 (about $285 per ton) on Friday. Futures closed at $12.820 per cwt (about $284 per ton) Friday
afternoon.
Rough rice cash prices held steady with offers around $13.00-$13.33 per cwt fob farm (about $287-$294 per
ton) throughout the week and bids firming up slightly to $13.00-$13.50 per cwt (about $287-$298 per ton).
Other Markets
In the first seven months of 2014, China has imported about 1.503 million tons of rice, a decrease of about 6%
from the same period in 2013, according to the China Customs General Administration.
Chinese authorities are taking measures to stop cross border rice exports from Myanmar via the Muse border,
according to local sources.
The UNs Food and Agricultural Organization has forecasted Myanmars MY 2014-15 (July-June) milled rice
exports at around 700,000 tons, up 25% from its forecasts last month.
Cambodia 5% broken rice is today shown at about $470 per ton, unchanged from a week and a month ago and
up about $20 per ton from a year ago.
South Koreas state-run Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (KAFTC) has purchased 21,000 tons of
Chinese origin rice in a tender. Separately, the South Korean government will procure 370,000 tons of locally
produced rice this year in efforts to boost the countrys stockpiles and control failing prices, according to the
Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
Three different regions in Spain have earned the status of Protected Denomination of Origin: Calasparra D.O.,
Valencia D.O., and Arroz Delta del Ebro D.O.


Ghanas government is losing about GH Cedi 76.8 million (about $22.5 million) annually due to the continuing
ban on inland rice importation, according to a Special Advisor for Local Rice Production. Separately, the
Multi-Stakeholder Rice Producers and Marketers Association (MSRPMA) in Ghana has urged the government
to step up efforts to increase rice production and reduce imports in the country, according to local sources.
The Ebola outbreak in western Africa has caused delays to Liberias rice imports, sending prices higher.
The Bank of Industries in Nigeria is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development (MARD) to provide N13 billion (about $79 million) in rice intervention fund to help boost rice
production in the country.
Egypt will lift its ban on rice exports in MY 2014-15, according to Bloomberg.

Thai Farm Sector Faces Critical Labor Shortage,

A study found that the Thai farm sector, including rice,
is facing acute labor shortages due to increased
production costs and reduced productivity, according to
local sources.The study found that the average age of
farmers currently very high and nearly 85% of the
farmers interviewed said they did not want their next
generations to take up farming. A 5-10% decline in the
number of students in the agriculture courses also
confirms the disinterest among farmers. Currently, there
are 16 million farm workers in Thailand according to the
Director of the Agricultural Economic Operation Centre
(AEOC) under the Office of Agricultural Economics
(OAE). The AEOC Director expects only 3% increase in
farm workers yearly.


The government has been planning to introduce a new farm policy involving zoning, which would cut down on
production costs and increase productivity. However, the implementation of such a policy takes time. So, some
agriculturists are suggesting that the government take steps to legitimize the migration workers. According to
data from the Department of Employment, Thailand has nearly 2.23 million migrant workers. Around 200,000
migrant workers at ports have left Thailand fearing military crackdown after the military government took over
on May 22, 2014.
Meanwhile, paddy farmers have demanded about 10,000 baht (around $304) per ton of common paddy, about
11,000 baht (around $340) per ton of Pathum Thani paddy and about 15,000 baht (around $464) per ton of the
Hom Mali variety. They say the prices would help them cover their production costs of about 5,000 baht per rai
(around $387 per hectare) as well as retain some profit.The Commerce Ministry is planning to ask millers to
pay 100-200 baht (around $3-$6) above market prices per ton to support farmers. It is also planning to provide
loans to millers at special interest rates for buying stocks from farmers. The government is keen on putting
check to concurrent rice sales by farmers as it may put downward pressure on prices.

Pakistan rice sellers lowered their quotes for 25% broken rice and 100% broken rice by about $5 per ton each to
around $355- $365 per ton and around $320 - $330 per ton respectively today. Other Asia rice sellers kept their
quotes mostly unchanged.
5% Broken Rice
Thailand 5% rice is quoted at around $435 - $445 per ton, about $5 per ton discount to Vietnam 5% rice shown
at around $440 - $450 per ton.
India 5% rice is quoted at around $425 - $435 per ton, about $20 per ton premium on Pakistan 5% rice quoted at
around $405 - $415 per ton.
25% Broken Rice
Thailand 25% rice was last quoted at around $350 - $360 per ton, about $50 per ton discount to Vietnam 25%
rice shown at around $400 - $410 per ton. India 25% rice is quoted at around $380 - $390 per ton, about $25 per
ton premium on Pakistan 25% rice quoted at around $355 - $365 per ton, down about $5 per ton from yesterday.
Parboiled Rice
Thailand parboiled rice is quoted at around $435 - $445 per ton. India parboiled rice is quoted at around $415 -
$425 per ton, about $25 per ton discount to Pakistan parboiled rice last quoted at around $440 - $450 per ton.
100% Broken Rice


Thailand broken rice, A1 Super, was last quoted at around $310 - $320 per ton, about $25 per ton discount to
Vietnam broken rice shown at around $335 - $345 per ton. India broken sortexed rice is quoted at around $330 -
$340 per ton, about $10 per ton premium on Pakistan broken sortexed rice quoted at around $320 - $330 per
ton, down about $5 per ton from yesterday.
Tackling N, P Problems Is Now No Problem for Rice
Farmers

Dr D Chinnam Naidu, a rice researcher and Programme Coordinator,
Agriculture Extension at Krishi Vignan Kendra in Aamudalavalasa in
south India, suggests solutions to excess or deficiency of chemical
elements while cultivating the rice plant. Today, he discusses about
Nitrogen and Phosphorous.
Oryza: Tell us about how Nitrogen helps in the growth of the rice
plant?
Dr Naidu: Nitrogen helps the plant to grow lush and strong. When the
plant enjoys optimum Nitrogen, it also can optimize the presence of
other essential nutrients around.
Orzya: What does excess of Nitrogen result in? Also what are the
symptoms of lack of Nitrogen? What should farmers do to tackle
this?
Dr Naidu : Excess Nitrogen can make the plant grow rapidly and sport
slender, long stems which cannot support the weight of the plant,
leading to eventual breakage of the stem which is dangerous to the
plant. It also gets succulent, thereby exposing itself to several infections.
Shortage of Nitrogen: The first symptoms include yellowing of lower leaves and rapidly leaf fall leading to poor
food processing.
Solution: Administer 48 kg Nitrogen per acre. It has to be administered in three phases - seedling, growth and
before harvest.
Oryza: Tell us about how Phosphorous helps in the growth of the rice plant?
Dr Naidu: Phosphorous helps the paddy root to stay long and strong. It also helps the plant to mature for
cultivation and harvest on time. Phosphorous also offsets the effects of excess absorption of nitrogen. It also
prevents crop losses due to delayed plantation. Most paddy soils in India suffer from low levels of
Phosphorous.
Oryza: How can farmers detect irregularities of Phosphorous levels?
Dr Naidu: Discolouration of leaves is the main sign of excess or lack of Phosphorous levels.
Orzya: What do you think should the farmer do when he notices discolouration of leaves in the paddy plant?
Dr Naidu: I suggest that farmers administer 24 kg of Phosphorous for one acre of paddy. Some farmers use
Phosphorous fertilizer nearly 20 days after planting paddy as they believe that it will help in the delayed release
of Phosphorous and help the plant survive even under tough conditions. Administering Phosphorous fertilizer


too late may prevent the plants from fully absorbing it and may end up in wastage of money on the fertilizer.

Expanded farming of flood-tolerant rice
for food security stressed

RANGPUR, Sept 25 (BSS): Expanded farming of flood tolerant rice varieties could increase rice production
substantially and ensure national food security despite adverse impacts of climate change, speakers said at a
workshop on Wednesday afternoon.Agriculture and Environment Unit of RDRS Bangladesh organised the
workshop on 'Climate Change and Cultivation of Flood Tolerant Rice for Food Security' at its Lalmonirhat unit
hall room in Lalmonirhat district town.
Superintendent of Police of Lalmonirhat TM Mozahedul Islam attended the daylong workshop as the chief
guest with Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) for Lalmonirhat Shafayet
Hossain in the chair.Vice-chairman of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila Anjuman Ara Shapla attended the workshop
as the special guest while Programme Manager (Filed Coordination) of RDRS Bangladesh Abu Sadat
Mohammad Maidul Islam delivered the welcome speech.Agriculture Officer of the reputed NGO Dilip Kumar
Roy delivered the keynote presentation in the workshop also attended by Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer
(UAO) Hamidur Rahman and Aditmari UAO Mohammad Nuruzzaman.Thirty participants including member-
farmers of different Farmers' Filed Schools involved with farming of different flood tolerant rice varieties, DAE
officials, chairmen of different union federations of RDRS Bangladesh and local journalists took part.The
speakers said farmers of Lalmonirhat have been successfully cultivating flood-tolerant rice with assistance of
the Stress Tolerant Rice for Poor Farmers in Africa and South Asia (STRASA-IRRI) Project to get excellent
production even after submergence under flood water in recent years.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) has been financing the project through the International Rice
Research Institute (IRRI) for increasing rice production in Bangladesh under adverse situations with GO-NGO
collaboration, they said.A number of farmers narrated as how their growing plants of flood tolerant rice like
BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BINA dhan11 and BINA dhan12 sustained submergence for 14-17 during the
very recent floods to grow again after recession of floodwater.The participating farmers also informed that they
got bumper yield of these flood-tolerant rice varieties between 4.5 to 5 tonnes paddy per hectare last season
despite submergence under floodwaters for up to 15-18 days at a stretch.
