NA, NC & ND countryside management
students recently started a series of visits for
the Coastal Management Unit. The first site at
Walton on the Naze Essex, is arguably one of
most important sites in the UK in terms of
geology, erosion, geomorphology. The base of
the cliffs is made up of Eocene Clay up to 55
million years old. When these were laid down
the UK was further south and much warmer
with tropical seas, Sharks and Sequoias. On
top of this is the Red Crag deposits which are
up to 3 million years old; here the UK was
cooler the fossils are made up mainly of shells
and lay in an oxidised bed. This site is
important for the countrysiders for several
reasons as it visibly demonstrates key
processes such as:
Slumping or Rotational Slip where water
percolates down through the crag and onto the
Eocene clay as this is porous but impermeable the
crag simply slips off and onto the foreshore.
Flanking & Scouring where water gets behind
hard wall defences and causes damage. These
processes are accentuated by isostatic recovery from
the last ice age Essex is sinking whilst sea level is
rising.
On a conservation level the cliffs are a geological
SSSi site due to the beds and fossils present. The
cliff erosion is encroaching on a 18C look out tower
of local historical importance. For some this is
important in terms of loss of cultural assets in the
absence of no further protection. From a defence
viewpoint we could ask how much would it cost to
defend such areas. At sites like Walton the
geomorphological processes occurring may mean
that the coast is simply too costly and too complex to
prevent from eroding.
Our picture below shows the plight of the WWII
bunkers these were not so long ago on the cliff top!
We wonder what the cliffs would have looked like in
the 18C when the tower was built? Moreover, where
will this part of the coast end up?

Treemendous
landing
Over 1,500 young elm
trees recently landed at
Gatwick Airport, many
for immediate despatch
across the UK.
The trees were shipped in
from the USA by Dorset-
based Knoll Gardens as
part of the nurserys
campaign to restore the elm
across the British Isles.
Millions of English elms
have been lost to the
ravages of Dutch Elm
Disease since the 1970s and
Knolls owner, Neil Lucas is
hoping that these disease
tolerant Princeton Elms
(Ulmus americana
Princeton), will play a part
in restoring some of this
lost heritage.
We have to accept that
we will never replace the
millions of elms we have
already lost, said Neil.
But these Princeton Elms
will help us make a start,
and Ive been delighted by
the orders we have already
received.
The Prince of Wales has
already taken delivery of
over 60 Princeton Elms for
a new avenue at Highgrove
House, and our latest order
has just been despatched to
Rugby School for planting
in the very close where
William Webb Ellis first
invented the game of rugby
football.
At Rugby, as on the
Highgrove Estate, many
elms were lost and these
plantings are typical of a
nationwide desire to both
reclaim our heritage and
restore the Elm throughout
the British Isles.
A mature Princeton Elm,
though with larger leaves
than the classic English
elm, has a beautiful outline
that lends itself to use
either as a single specimen
tree or as an avenue.
Princeton has also been
proved to be incredibly
disease tolerant. Eighty-
year-old Princeton Elms
create magnificent avenues
in the USA and remain in
perfect condition to this day.
It is this combination of
disease tolerance and
proven longevity that make
the Princeton Elm unique.
The recently arrived
container-grown whips are
available only from Knoll
Gardens. Despatched with
full planting and growing
instructions, they cost just
35 for a 3ft tree. As they
grow up to 6 foot each year
It is easy to see just how
quickly they are able to
make their mark on the
landscape and replace little
of our lost heritage as they
grow.
You can now order
Princeton Elms online at
www.knollgardens.co.uk, or
call Knoll Gardens direct on

CONFERENCE
Thursday 22nd May 2008 at The Town Hall, Reading RG1 1QH
The bark of a tree can be damaged by people and their machines, animals or
natural events. Sometimes this is done deliberately to coerce the tree into a
particular growth pattern, or to limit its life. More often the damage is not
welcome, and the subsequent effects on the tree have to be managed.
Those responsible for trees should be equipped to: identify real threats to trees; protect
trees from damage; seek to treat the cause(s) of the damage; repair the damaged tree.
This was described in the Tree Advice Trusts Arboricultural Practice Note Girdling,
Constriction and Ring Barking (APN 13 Published in February 2008).
This conference will expand on the newly published guidance and should be of particular
interest to: local authority tree officers; estate managers; tree wardens; landscape
contractors; arboricultural consultants.
For further information and a booking form, please contact:

New concept harness designed for Arborists
TreeFlex has been designed as a custom harness for the specific needs of
today's modern arborist. The combined efforts of experienced arborists,
safety technologists and remedial personal trainers within the TreeFlex
team, ensure that your future health and safety is our top priority.
Because arborists have to sit, stand, twist and lean in a harness more than any
other work at height, we believe that harnesses (and many other tools) currently on
the market are not fulfilling the requirements of ergonomic activity in trees as well
as they could be.
The TreeFlex harness is designed to support the climber in an efficient seated,
twisted and standing position, without the typical muscular/skeletal restrictions that
some harnesses impose. Flexibility and strength have been incorporated into a
versatile design, to help ensure that your daily work station is as ergonomic and safe
as practicable, in a lightweight, durable and unrestrictive design.
The key design features of TreeFlex are:
Anatomically designed back pad
Raised sacrum pad and custom designed chainsaw clip point
Anatomically designed leg loops
Hexafoam pad lining
Closed cell foam external support
Sliding bridge and fixed waist
attachment points
Effective centre of balance
adjustment
Simple and secure waist
adjustment and abdominal support
Colour coded adjustment straps
Gear loops and slots

I Wild attraction. Bats could be
swooping through the dusky skies above
Queens Park Garden, in London, after
the creation of a new urban wildlife haven
yards from a densely populated housing
estate. The wildlife area, which features a
wildflower meadow, native hedgerow,
living willow dome and stag beetle
loggery, was recently opened.
Experts hope that some of the City of
Westminsters estimated 30,000 bats
will be drawn to the wildlife haven.
Horticulture Week
I Husqvarna has developed the
worlds first solar/electric hybrid robot
lawnmower that can cut grass
unsupervised. Made from 90 percent
recyclable materials, it uses the same
amount of energy as a standard light
bulb and cuts the grass into a fine mulch
that does not need collecting. It uses a
cable to outline the area to be cut. Head
of Design, Towe Ressman, said: This is
a glimpse of what gardening will be in the
future.
Horticulture Week
I The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
closed to the public for the first time in
four years on Monday 10th March
because of gusting high winds. A
representative said: There are some
fallen branches but no serious
damages.
Horticulture Week
I Society returns to its roots
in Hexham after 125 years.
A tree-planting ceremony at Hexham
Abbey has marked the 125th anniversary
of the Royal Forestry Society, which was
founded in the town in 1882.
Members of the Society, including
National President, John Besent, and the
Chairman of the North East Division,
William Salvin, looked on as the Duke of
Northumberland planted an English
walnut tree in the grounds of the Abbey,
with a plaque to mark the occasion.
Two plaques were also unveiled to
mark previous trees planted by the
Society in 1932 and 1982.
The Society has its roots in Hexham
where, 125 years ago, a group of
nurserymen, foresters and land agents
met at the home of John W Robson, a
local nurseryman, to establish what was
then the English Arboricultural Society.
In 1905 its name changed to the Royal
Forestry Society thanks to the patronage
of Edward VII. The royal connection has
continued ever since, with the Prince of
Wales serving as president from
198284 and the Queen being the
current patron.
The Society believes in the wise
management of woodlands and trees. Its
members include professional foresters,
woodland owners, ecologists, students
and people who simply love trees and
want to find out more about them.

FlorArb Capels unique one-day-a-week
Skills Swap Course was again a soaring
success with students.
And this year we welomed our saddlery
students who are studying for their
Cordwainers Diploma.
The arborists were very keen to pass on their
tree climbing climbing skills to the Modern
Retail Floristry and Saddlery students.
And the Florists were delighted to show the
Arborists how to create a circlet head dress. The
Arb boys were shown how to make leather
belts by the Saddlery students and were each
presented with the finished article.

National Certificate student Richard Noakes
is pictured retrieving a large section from a
tree he was pruning at Capels Forty Hall
Farm Conservation Wood. Richard had
previously studied for his First Diploma at the
college.
The apprenticeship programme
includes several elements, which
unfortunately for the students does
not just include climbing and
chainsaw operations! So this first
term has been a mixture of practical
and classroom based activities. The
students have successfully passed
their Application of Number and
Communication exams and have
also passed their Emergency First
Aid. Whilst all this is a requirement
of the course it has meant that only
half of the time has been dedicated
to arboriculture training. Despite
this a lot has been achieved and the
students already feel that they have
learnt new skills.
All apprentices have been taught
the basics of tree climbing and have
been involved in aerial rescue
operations. A climbing competition
has been organised and no doubt
the times will improve significantly
as the course progresses! The
attainment of CS30 and 31 is an
important part of the course and
Sam Jones, the course tutor, has
already started teaching this. It has
been important to retain the
interest of the apprentices whilst
they have had to concentrate on
other aspects of the course.
However it is important that we
also give them some skills early in
the course that they can then
develop in the workplace. The
feedback from the students so far
has been excellent.

Apprenticeship Scheme phone
