EDITORS NOTE
THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE:
THE COLD, HARD TRUTH
Millions around the world have taken on the ice bucket challenge to
raise money for charity. How did it start? Why did it get slammed by
environmentalists and why did Matt Damon use water from his toilet?
Tom Freyberg Chief Editor
Follow on
or the second time this week Ive been nominated to take on the so called ice
bucket challenge.
For those who havent seen the headlines, or countless stories on social media
sites, this is where you fll a bucket with ice and water, pour it over your head, and
nominate three friends to complete the challenge in 24 hours. You then make a
donation to charity. A simple, momentary painful experience for a great outcome.
All tapping into the power of social media. But how did it start?
In mid July a Florida golfer was nominated by a friend and decided that his
donation should go to ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), as his cousin suffered
from the disease. A chain of nominations later and it reached Pete Frates, a former
baseball player who suffers from ALS. This is when the campaign started truly
going global. The likes of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg took on the challenge,
before nominating Bill Gates.
According to the offcial ALS website, donations quadrupled in the last week of
August alone. From $22.6 million on August 19th to a staggering $88.5 million on
August 26th (30 times more than the same period in 2013). Great entertainment for a
great cause. What could go wrong? Well, quite a lot actually.
Videos of millions of people pouring water over themselves inevitably sparked
accusations of wasting water. Questions were asked about tipping perfectly
adequate drinking water away while millions in developing countries lacked this
privilege. One video from Gaza in protest was an eye opener. Three brothers pour
buckets of sand, and even rubble, instead of water over their heads. They said they
didnt have water to waste and intermittent electricity meant they couldnt make ice.
This then started the Rubble Bucket Challenge. Alarmist headlines also reported
how one island in Scotland Colonsay had its water system shut down due to
demand from the ice bucket challenge.
Hollywood actor Matt Damon, co-founder of water.org, used water from his
household toilets. Mentioning a drought in California, he said that past attempts at
the challenge posed a problem as theres about 800 million people in the world
who dont have access to clean drinking water. The water in our toilets in the west
is actually cleaner than the water that people in the developing world have access
to, he said.
Doing a Damon might be extreme for some, yet how about reusing rainwater
from a water butt? Or if you have a garden, stand in a fower patch and give
yourself a good soaking there, in the process watering your prize petunias?!
Unfortunately, like every viral phenomenon, the virtual shelf life is quite limited.
In a world where social media is now king, and news feeds are updated incessantly,
news barely lasts the duration of a day before being replaced. So yes, Ill be taking
on the ice bucket challenge and donating, in my garden (but without the prize
fowers)

ANALYSIS
WATER SCARCITY COULD POTENTIALLY
LIMIT HYDRAULIC FRACTURING DEVELOPMENT
Nearly 40% of the worlds shale
resources face high to extremely high
water stress or arid conditions, a new
report has found.
Called Global Shale Gas Development:
Water Availability & Business Risk, the
report by the World Resources Institute
(WRI) ranked water stress across the
20 countries with the largest shale
resources.
In 40% of these countries, future
shale production could happen in arid
conditions or under high water stress.
Seven indicators were used to
evaluate water availability and the
associated business risks for shale
development: water stress, water-supply
variation among months of the year,
drought severity, groundwater depletion
rates, largest water user, population
density and depth of shale reserve.
The report shared four
recommendations to protect water
security while minimizing business
risks, including conducting water risk
assessments.
Earlier this year, however, a report
from the Chartered Institute of Water
and Environmental Management
(CIWEM) painted a different picture.
Its study found that compared to
other fossil fuels, the overall water
use intensity of shale gas is low and
claims by some opponents that the
industry represents a threat to the
security of public water supplies are
alarmist.
Estimates show that to meet 10% of
the UK gas demand from shale gas over
20 years would require 1.2 - 1.6 million
m
3
water per year.
When compared to the volume of
water that is licensed to be taken from
the environment each year in England
and Wales, it equates to less than 1/10th
of 1% of total abstraction.
It was in December 2013 when water
industry body Water UK and the UK
Onshore Operators Group signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
to cooperate throughout the shale gas
exploration and extraction process.
A key aim of the signed MoU was
to give the public greater confdence
and reassurance that everything will be
done to minimise the effects on water
resources and the environment.

The installation will be at Beijings
largest wastewater treatment plant in
Gaobeidian, which has a wastewater
treatment capacity of one million m

/d,
serving a population of about 3.2 million
people.
The facility is owned and operated by
the Beijing Drainage Group and Cambis
THP technology will be ftted and
operated by 2016.
As part of an ongoing strategic
cooperation, another four large-scale
sludge projects could also be potentially
signed between 2016-2017, using THP
and high dry solids digestion and high
dry solids dewatering.
When operational, all fve sludge
plants could treat 6000 tonnes/day
of sludge. The Gaobeidian Advanced
Digestion Plant (above) consists of a
20-reactor Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis
plant with four process trains followed
by Advanced Digestion and high dry-
solids dewatering.
Eight of the old digesters will be
demolished to make space for the THP
and the Anammox process for treatment
of the liquid from dewatering the
digested sludge.
Cambi said: The THP-plant will
process all the sewage sludge produced
at the plant and thereby double existing
digester loading and freeing eight of 16
existing anaerobic digesters.
THP Thermal hydrolysis is a two-
stage process combining pressure
cooking followed by a rapid
decompression. This combined action
sterilizes the sludge and is said to
makess it more biodegradable.
It was in May last year when Cambi
announced its frst contract in Spain,
to deliver its THP technology to a new
WWTP in Vigo, to eventually process
22,000 tons of dry solids per year.

THE BIG QUESTION: LEAKAGE/NRW MANAGEMENT
We ask technology companies: How far can leakage/
non-revenue water (NRW) be reduced using a complete
asset management approach?
THE
BIG
QUESTION
R
educing water loss due to
leakage has been the focus of
increasing effort during the last
twenty years and the action taken has
resulted in a signifcant improvement.
Leakage is around 35% lower now
than at its highest level in 1994 and 1995
a reduction equal to the daily needs of
nearly ten million domestic customers.
With the easiest problems effectively
addressed, where should water
companies and pipeline operators be
directing their attention in order to
continue this improvement?
Technology developed in the 1990s
with further refnement in the last
decade has enabled water companies
to develop some degree of pro-active
response to leaks as they occur.
Internal inspection techniques, a
gold standard for effectiveness, incur
large costs for deployment and traffc
management together with increased
contamination risks. So while a water
company may wish to use internal
methods, their practicality is limited.
The answer to this apparent dilemma
is to bring in far more data from the
network, analyse and interpret this data
correctly. Pro-active methodologies
detect and rank leakage as it develops,
targeting the water companys
limited repair resources in the most
cost effective manner. Pre-emptive
methodologies bring in pipeline age
and condition information together
with soil chemistry and stability data
and historical leak occurrence data for
a pipeline. This is then used to create a
heat-map of areas of the network which
are statistically likely to have leakage
now or will have in the near future.
Recent advances in smart and
automatic monitoring equipment offers
a step-change in data acquisition.
Algorithm-based software is being
increasingly applied, aggregating data
across a network to identify problems.
Taking a pro-active approach
James Dunning, CEO, Syrinix
A
survey of 184 water companies
worldwide in 2012 showed
potentially avoidable costs due
to leakage of 5.6 billion globally. There
are three areas that companies typically
focus on; improving understanding of
NRW, more effective asset management
and better operational performance.
One of the greatest challenges is
understanding how much of the
water treated or purchased is actually
delivered to customers. However, there
are proven technologies in metrology,
communications and analytics available
now which add understanding and
facilitate good business decision
making.
Estimating NRW is a surrogate
measure for asset condition and
operational performance; it doesnt
drive business improvement. However,
by employing accurate network
metering, end user consumption
analysis, increasing the resolution of
measurement data points and through
smarter analysis, water utilities
can improve the way they manage
customer service, asset replacement,
operational effectiveness, water resource
planning, and fnancial planning
and management. This approach of
combining intelligent metrology, near
real-time communications and data
analytics is what many are now defning
as a Smart Water Network. The industry
is starting to recognise the quantifed
fnancial benefts by addressing leakage.
We now need the regulators to step in
and encourage innovation.
Creating a smart water network

THE BIG QUESTION: LEAKAGE/NRW MANAGEMENT
W
hile leaks on critical
trunk mains are often a
major contributor to NRW,
operational ineffciencies can also lead
to high water loss, and therefore wasted
capital needed to treat and pump lost
water. Many utilities around the world
have successfully reduced NRW with an
advanced inline leak detection program
that targets large-diameter trunk mains.
However, combining a leak detection
program with an asset management
strategy can even further reduce water
loss.
An asset management approach
targets water loss on a system-
wide basis; completing a consumer
meter reading analysis to determine
consumption statistics and populate
a hydraulic model is an important
step in this process. If consumers are
billed individually, this provides per
consumptions statistics, which help
identify potential metering problems
that can be rectifed.
Another component of an asset
management strategy is a NRW study,
which is done in conjunction with a
metering analysis to develop future NRW
strategies. By collecting existing metering
data, utilities can perform water balances
and identify areas where water is lost due
to leaks or unauthorized consumption.
From there, a more targeted inline leak
detection program can identify leaks
and unauthorized consumption along
specifc trunk mains. By combining asset
management and inspection, utilities can
effectively allocate resources to maximize
the benefts of leak detection programs.
After completing the initial analyses,
an evaluation of the existing systems
hydraulic performance allows for
simulation analysis, which can be applied
to optimize operations and service
delivery.
This also allows utilities to complete
what if analyses. These can serve as
a training tool for new operators and
planners, as well as form the basis for
optimized planning of future expansions
to accommodate any anticipated growth
in the supply area, which is a reality for
many utilities.
By adopting an asset management
approach, operators can better understand
their existing system, along with any
ineffciencies. This allows for immediate
NRW reduction by eliminating
ineffciency and improving service
delivery. It also allows for a more strategic
leak detection program that maximizes
resources.
Understanding your existing system
Xiangjie Kong, director of research and development, Pure Technologies
A
complete asset management
approach, traditionally used for
infrastructure-related planning
and decision making, also has an
indirect (albeit signifcant) effect over
leakage and NRW reduction. Referring
specifcally to NRW, asset management
reduces NRW in two ways:
Apparent losses, which include
metering and billing issues, are often
reduced.
The under registration of meters,
inaccurate readings, and repeating
meter or telemetry faults can result
in inaccurate measurement and incur
excess billing from the bulk supplier
(paid by water utilities) or the utility
side (paid by consumers).
Utilities taking a combined approach
to data analytics and asset management
have an advantage when it comes to
avoiding this overpayment.
This is because this approach
compares the meters actual
performance with the manufacturers
specifcations, detecting any
discrepancies stemming from meter
misbehaviors.
Analysis also allows for a comparison
between the manufacturers
recommended meter environment
specifcations and the actual
environment setting. This enables
informed decisions related to meter type
selection, replacement, and billing.
Real losses refer to actual water loss
and are, among other factors, a result of
leakage, which can also be reduced by a
complete asset management approach.
This approach can be applied
to support pipe replacement and
rehabilitation planning decisions,
consequently reducing leakage. The
combination of pipe attributes (e.g.
material, diameter, age) and more
extensive GIS information, actual
feld data (fow, pressure, pressure
transients, etc.), repair logs and other
historical issues (e.g. event history of
a water monitoring system), and feld
information (soil type, proximity to train
lines, etc.) is extremely powerful.
A comprehensive analysis that
incorporates these infrastructure and
system elements can be used to make
educated replacement/rehabilitation
prioritization decisions.
The analysis also optimizes the
suggested new pipes attributes in
regard to feld conditions that they will
have to endure (considering relevant
costs). The overall effect of this approach
is a reduction in leakage events and
background leakage.
The combination of real network
data, repair logs, and asset management
information from multiple operational
networks is integral to such data
analytics developments.
It allows for smarter asset
management and, consequently, reduced
NRW.
A combined approach

Earlier this year Californian membrane company NanoH2O was acquired by South Koreas LG Chem.
In a West meets East merge, what will the combined business mean for the competitive membrane
market? We speak to president Chul Nam to fnd out.
By Tom Freyberg.

SOUTH KOREA/
AMERICA
What Does the Future Hold for
NanoH2O Under LG Ownership?
A
t the end of 2011 WWi
reported on what could be
called the water industrys
Cinderella story. The headline read:
Commercialising Desalinations Holy
Grail: Low Cost, High Flux Membranes.
It documented how, in fve years a
Californian start up commercialised a
university R&D project and attracted $35
million investment. At the time critics
may have thought this story was too
good to be true. Yet this same company
NanoH2O continued expanding.
Since then it has achieved 300 membrane
references globally and invested $45
million into a manufacturing site in
Liyang, China. Fast forward to the
middle of March 2014 and rumours
spread that the US company was to be
acquired by South Korean-based LG
Chem the same group as the well
known electronics company, LG.
New sources including Businessweek
and the Yonhap News Agency reported
that LG Chem had revealed the plan in a
fling to the Korea Exchange.
Two months later and the two
companies confrmed the reports.
Although the purchase sum was not
disclosed (earlier reports suggested
US$200 million), the acquired company
would become known as LG NanoH2O.
TAKING THE TOP SPOT
In an East meets West merge, the new
company does not hold back on its
ambition.
Speaking to WWi, Chul Nam, president
of LG NanoH2O, says: We believe
the synergy between LG Chem and
NanoH2O will propel to us to become the
market leader in the RO business.
Our catchphrase is business is to be
global number one, he adds. When
we launch a new business our objective
is always to be the number one globally.
Thats very clear. Our strategy includes
development of innovative products and
a global sales and service network.
LG Chem is now a leader in thin flm
coating technology, which is a strategic
advantage over our competitors. In
addition, we are well linked to large scale
manufacturing facility in Korea, with
future expansion plans into China as
well.
One aim behind the merge is that the
companies will increase market share
in the reverse osmosis (RO) market.
This will be engineered by tapping into
NanoH2Os intellectually property,
combining it with LG Chems R&D
efforts and combining sales channels
from both organisations. Potentially, its
a very powerful combination.
To put LG Chem into perspective,
it was founded in 1947 as a chemical
business, and is one of 62 subsidiary
companies of the LG Group. LG Chem
is a listed company, like LG Electronics,
but they act as totally independent
companies.
In 2013 LG Chem generated a
turnover of $22 billion, from products
sold into the petrochemicals market to
battery manufacturing.
LG NanoH2O has aims to be the
world number one in the RO market

TAPPING INTO CHINA
Moving forward, Nam believes the
biggest growth for the company will
come from brackish water and China.
Brackish water, especially industrial
applications of wastewater reuse
now account for 60% of the entire
RO market, says Nam. To maintain
operation sustainability we must get
into the brackish seawater product
market, especially for industrial water
applications. We will focus in the
beginning on petrochemical,
oil & gas and wastewater
reuse. As you know the
biggest water for the
brackish water is
now China. We
believe we are
very strong in
China, especially
with our sales
force networks.
The president
says the frm
has fnished
development of
brackish water products
and China will be the biggest
target market for these. Anti-fouling
technology has also been applied to
the membranes. They hope to start
pilot applications and testing in China,
Europe and America this Autumn.
We had already developed anti-
fouling products in LG Chem prior to
taking over Nano H2O, adds Nam. So
we will apply LG Chems own anti-
fouling technology on this product line.
DEVELOPMENT OF GRAPHENE
AND MATERIAL SCIENCE
University research on graphene a
material said to be stronger than steel
for use in water fltration continues to
gather pace. Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) researchers have been
working on this for fve years.
Meanwhile Lockheed Martin
engineers, under the trademark
Perforene, have received four patents
covering graphene membranes.
With graphene being one of the
membrane industrys hottest topics,
where does LG Nano H2O stand on its
development?
As far as I understand
many of these
university projects on
new materials are
showing improved
performance in
the lab, admits
Nam. All of
these type of
materials show
great promise
in the laboratory
but theres a big
difference between lab
scale and mass production
scale. But consideration of new
materials such as graphene and carbon
nanotubes and performance innovation
will occur in the next generation.
Nam says they are working with
universities in South Korea and that
our continuous investment into R&D,
including material science, is one of our
core strategies.
FUTURE INVESTMENT AND
CONCLUSION
It was at the end of 2010 when LG
announced it would be investing
US$400 up until 2020 to enter the water
treatment market and develop an
advanced membrane fltration system.
So if the earlier reports are to be
believed and LG Chem spent $200
million buying the Californian company,
this would leave a further $200 million
for investment. How will this be spent?
In the near future further mass
production plants and R&D will be
the main investment areas, says
Nam enthusiastically. After this we
will invest more resources especially
for capacity expansion in Korea and
China as well. However, all investment
depends on our performance, success
and commitment.
Becoming the sought after number
one is not just a LG philosophy but
a South Korean one, it seems. From
the legend that ex-Samsung CEO GS
Choi spent two decades chasing Sony
to become the number one TV brand,
to the company overtaking Apple in
the smartphone manufacturing race:
the drive for global supremecy seems
inherent in South Koreas genetics.
While the television and smart phone
war has become fercely competitive, so
has the membrane arena, particularly
in China. WWi understand there to be
at least 800 companies in this country
alone.
By combining NanoH2Os technology
and reputation, with a South Korean
chemical giants distribution channels
and R&D army, the new combined
company will no doubt continue to
climb in one direction.

A
rapid consolidation of
Hungarys water utilities
has taken place over the
last three years, which has already
delivered major benefts for end-users.
Transforming from a highly centralised
socialist system to a market economy
25 years ago, the country faced an
affordability challenge, never having
made charges for water that related to
the cost of service delivery.
The 33 state-owned Soviet-era
water utilities were dismantled when
communism collapsed in Hungary,
and responsibility passed to individual
municipalities. This resulted in fve
regional utilities and over 400 municipal
utility companies in the subsequent
years.
This decentralisation of water
and wastewater services did little to
address effciency and affordability
issues. Instead, it led to the creation of
numerous village-level public utilities,
some comprising only 1,000 end-users.
Kroly Kovcs, chairman of the
Hungarian Water Cluster, explains
how having tariffs and maintenance
managed on a micro level, meant
replacement and maintenance of assets
was often neglected. He says: With
time, pipe bursts on the network will
increase, operational costs will increase
and the assets will be used, but not
replaced.
Because the costs of replacement
will not be covered by the taxes and
tariffs that the users are paying, this all
goes against European legislation like
the Water Framework Directive, which
speak about cost recovery and user
pays principle.
In order to improve control of
water utilities, meet European
standards, improve effciency and
deliver consolidation in the sector, the
Hungarian Government introduced a
new Water Utilities Act in 2011. This
legislation leveraged consolidation by
mandating that the minimum size of
each water utility should increase.
Initially a 50,000 minimum number of
household connections was introduced
for any utility company. This was then
increased to 100,000 and now stands
at a 150,000 target to be met by the end
of 2014. Today there are 46 utilities in
Hungary and this is expected to fall to
Hungary has reduced its 400-
plus utilities to just 46 in three
years. Natasha Wiseman investigates

less than 40 by 2015.
Kovcs explains that the fve regional
state utilities now serve 25% of the
population:
They are great integrators, so the
small ones have moved into the regional
utilities. Now the legislation says these
basic assets - the pipelines and the
plants - must be in the entire ownership
of the municipalities or the state.
However, he adds, contracting out
of the service provider and operations
and maintenance work is not excluded,
according to the law.
The Water Act has also leveraged a
complete reassessment of asset values,
which runs until 2015. New customer
tariffs will be based on the revised
asset values and are decided by the
government. Over the last four years,
customer bills have actually gone down,
although the country faces some tough
decisions around tariffs down the line.
Kovcs explains: In the bigger
municipalities, where the density of the
population is higher, the cost of services
and of maintenance, calculated per
cubic metre or per capita, is cheaper.
In small municipalities, these costs are
substantially higher.
The question for the legislation is:
how to spread the higher costs to a
larger number of customers. The more
extreme possibility would be to have
just one tariff for the whole country -
there might be a system to compensate
those regions where costs are higher.
Kovcs says that to date the
implementation of the Water Utilities
Act and consolidation of the utilities
has been smooth with no objection from
either the municipalities or the end
users.
With customers experiencing
better service connectivity, higher
water quality and now anticipating a
further 10% decrease in tariffs, that is
probably not surprising. Customers

have also gained from the outlawing of
municipalities cross-subsidising other
services through water tariffs. Another
major win is that tendering is much
more effcient.
Providing an example, Kovcs
says: A big part of the costs for the
integrated companies is the electricity
costs. Utilities are now tendering in
much bigger packages and can get
better prices.
He says that public feeling in
Hungary means that state ownership
of utilities is likely to remain and
there will be little opportunities for
the outsourcing of the basic service in
terms of municipal water supply and
sanitation. However, the opportunities
for technological development and
supplier cooperation are already well
established.
Companies from Germany,
Denmark, UK, Canada are already
supplying equipment in Hungary.
Pumps, blowers, membranes theyre
here, being produced in Hungary and
supplied more widely into eastern
Europe, Kovcs asserts.
EXPERTISE
Hungary is also exporting its expertise
in the experience of making the
transition from a highly controlled
and centralised economy to a market-
orientated one. The Hungarian Water
Cluster, which was formed in 2008,
comprises 25 companies with a range of
expertise from research and consultancy
to drilling wells and water treatment.
It is fnding a niche in countries
managing similar economic legacies
such as the Balkans, China, Vietnam
and Mongolia. Hungarian companies
are also working in southern Africa and
Saudi Arabia.
INFRASTRUCTURE
Since the end of the 1990s, with
signifcant assistance from Europe,
Hungary has secured 97% quality
water supply to its population.
Pollution-free sanitation, though, is
still lagging behind, compared with
advanced EU states, despite recent
signifcant improvements, and 20% of
the population is still not connected to
centralised treatment.
The Budapest Central Wastewater
Treatment Plant, which serves 1.45
million population equivalent, was
completed fve years ago, along with
centralised treatment in other major
conurbations. Since then, the National
Settlement Wastewater Discharge &
Cleaning Implementation Programme
(2000-2015) has been underway.
The latest round of projects in
the country is focusing on smaller
municipalities of 2,000 to 15,000 PE, but
that will still leave some two million
people with on-site treatment, largely
in the form of septic tanks. In a country
where 90% of the national water supply
depends on groundwater or riverbank-
fltered wells, this dependency on
groundwater sources is combined with

CASE STUDY: ICE PIGGING
INNOVATION IN HUNGARY
Szeged Water Company (SWC) is
undertaking the frst Ice Pigging project
for pipe cleaning in Hungary. The
utility, which operates in the south
of the country, decided to take action
to improve drinking water quality
following a number of complaints about
discoloured water.
As the supplier of drinking water
supply and wastewater services to a
region that includes Hungarys third
largest city and over 160,000 residents,
SWC has resolved to clean up over
600km of potable water pipes to
remove sediment build up and bioflm.
Hungarian contractor Agriapipe,
a specialist in no-dig technologies,
identifed Ice Pigging as the ideal
solution.
Ice Pigging removes the need for large
and expensive enabling works as the ice
slurry forms an ice pig that is forced
through the pipe, cleaning the pipe
walls as it travels. The ice easily adapts
to the local topology of the pipe, even
accessing small entry points - saving
time, unnecessary expense and open
cut works that might disrupt the local
community.
Aqualogy, the global technology
and solutions division of Spanish
multinational Agbar, is the licence
holder for the patented Ice Pigging
technology. The company decided that
in order to best deliver the project, it
would work closely with Agriapipe and
the contractors operatives received full
training in delivering the technology.
With shared responsibility to clean
400km of the network, Aqualogy
will manage all ice production and
Agriapipe will perform ice insertion and
cleaning.
To maximise operational effciency,
Aqualogy has established an ice
production facility near Szeged capable
of producing 10 tonnes of ice slurry
daily. This will allow 4 - 6km of water
pipe to be cleaned per day, depending
on pipe diameter. While most water
utilities claim discolouration poses no
health risks, the water is may not be
palatable, which can lead to increased
levels of customer complaints.
Fast and exceptionally low risk, Ice
Pigging removes sediment and bioflm
from drinking water pipes and the
deposits that can build up in pressurised
sewers. Originally developed by
Professor Joe Quarini at the University
of Bristol, the technology has been
active in the UK for over 10 years, with
research and development supported by
Aqualogy, which is based in Bristol.
In 2010 Ice Pigging was
commercialised for use worldwide, with
successful projects since in Holland,
Germany, France, Japan, Australia,
Chile, Saudi Arabia, and the United
States.

Horace Greeley, the nineteenth century
newspaper editor and politician who
famously exhorted his fellow Americans
to Go West, young man.
For the fertile farmlands of the west
were apparently set to provide the ideal
backdrop for those prepared to work
hard by toiling the land to succeed.
But Bodnr has headed off in precisely
the opposite direction, abandoning his
native Hungary in East Europe for the
Far East, setting up shop in the teeming
metropolis of Shanghai. Why?
Because the opportunities in China
and South East Asia are so massive and
the momentum there so overwhelming
that I really wasnt left with any choice,
he says.
So head East he did. And where
Organicas innovative and odour free
wastewater treatment plants (WWTP)
which double up as botanical gardens
have been going down a treat ever since.
NANOTECHNOLOGY
It would also be a mistake to be lulled
into assuming that Organicas WWTPs
are designed to appeal exclusively to
radical free-thinking hippy types. For
behind the garden like atmosphere
where trees and fsh are ever-bountiful
there is in fact a highly effcient Fixed-
Bed Bioflm Activated Sludge (IFAS)
technology with complex IP, which
captures the deep understanding of the
workings of the more diverse biology.
The company kicked off,
understandably enough, on home turf,
with the Prologic Logistic Centre on
the south side of Budapest - a system
designed for an industrial park for 3000
people at 280 m
3
/day. That was back in
2001.
Fast forward 13 years and we can
see Organicas transformation into an
established but dynamic company with
a truly global reach. With less than
100 employees, the company operates
from offces not just in Budapest, but
Shanghai, New Delhi, Princeton and
Jakarta.
At the helm of that team is Organicas
CEO, Ari Raivetz who joined Organica
in 2011. Raivetz relocated his entire
family from New York to Hungary
including his four-year old twin girls,
to fortify Organicas mission. The
combination of Raivetzs business
acumen and Bodnrs architectural
innovation, proved to be enticing for
experienced industry players from
around the world to follow Raivetzs
example and move to Hungary to join
the Organica team.
It just doesnt make sense for sewage
to be pumped out of cities, unpleasant
concrete structures built to process it -
only for it then to be run back again into
town to be used in bathrooms, airport
cooling towers and so on, says Bodnr.
We believe in a more sustainable
urban planning principle whereby
we embrace a more decentralised
approach where treatment can happen
closer to where people live. Theres
a psychological barrier to overcome,
true enough. But if the WWTP can be
packaged and presented attractively
our experience is that people are
certainly up for it. Put it this way - we
recently opened a WWTP in France, in
partnership with Veolia, and over 700
people turned up.

in France back in 2011, Bodnr adds.
Now we are up to number 25. This can
of course be duplicated and replicated
in any country. So imagine the potential
here in China where everything is 100
times bigger. China is also a great
environment in which to do business
- whereas in Europe you might be
talking of a two to fve year sales cycle
here it can be anything from one to
two years. Thats pretty fast. There is
a vast urbanisation going on here -
you cant help but get the impression
that the whole country is one massive
construction site. Its the same story in
other parts of South East Asia too.
CLEANTECH AWARD WINNER
Organicas China-generated revenue
now accounts for approximately 25% of
the companys income. An impressive
fgure when you consider that barely
fve years ago China didnt appear in
the companys order books at all.
But its not just the Veolia partnership
which has conferred upon Organicas
additional credibility. They have
notched up a number of other successes
too. Last year the company won the
Water and Energy Exchange (WEX)
Innovation Award, recognising
signifcant achievements in the water
and wastewater management felds.
A few months later they entered
into a partnership with International
Finance Corporation (IFC), with the
participation of the WLR China Energy
Infrastructure Fund. This was rightly
heralded as a highly signifcant step on
the not unreasonable grounds that the
IFC, as part of the World Bank group,
is one of the most active fnanciers
of water treatment infrastructure
in the world. Then, as the autumn
approached, Bodnr was up on the
podium again, this time Organica
being named Company of the Year
Europe and Israel in the Cleantech
Groups prestigious Global Cleantech
100awards.
Although he describes himself as
a midwife helping this solution to
come about the truth is that Bodnr
is something of a philosopher himself.
And as every student of philosophy will
tell you when it comes to discussing
weighty issues relating to the meaning
of life, the use of language is crucial.
And this is absolutely true, believe
it or not when it comes to WWTPs,
he will inform you. A WWTP is a
wastewater treatment plant. Let me
repeat that. A wastewater treatment
plant. Who wants to use that phrase?
Its inaccurate, unattractive and pass.
My clients are now wanting to call
them Water Reclamation Gardens or a
Water Reclamation Facility. Why call it a
WWTP when you, as an investor, might
very well be able to sell on the treated
water?
And if it looks like a garden, smells
like a garden, creates water and you can
see waterfalls and plants in each and
every direction a place which supports
life with fsh and frogs and nesting for
ducks well, its a way of introducing
diversity into the concrete jungle and a
paradigm shift in our use of language is
surely an integral part of this process.
The CEO goes on to say: This
will help us in our quest to bring the
treatment process back to town, where
it belongs. Just like the toilet was
brought into the house from the garden
some 150 years ago. The big challenge
now, though, in my view, is get major
international architects to think about
this issue, to add their own creative
thoughts to this ongoing process. For
all of this falls within the context of
building sustainable cities. The crisis
is here its with us now and its
our duty to come up with innovative
solutions.
RECLAMATION GARDENS
If you want to talk about the architecture
of his WWTPs, or reclamation gardens
(RG) as Bodnr would prefer, he is in
his element. Thats only to be expected,
after all, for he is an architect by
training.
If you want to drill down into the
technical side of the RGs he is equally at
home and he will be able to talk to you
at length about how the treatment plants
are populated with sludge systems
A WWTP IS A WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT.
LET ME REPEAT THAT. A WASTEWATER TREATMENT
PLANT. WHO WANTS TO USE THAT PHRASE? ITS
INACCURATE, UNATTRACTIVE AND PASS. MY
CLIENTS ARE NOW WANTING TO CALL THEM WATER
RECLAMATION GARDENS OR A WATER RECLAMATION

PROCESS OVERVIEW: FBAS
Fixed-Bed Bioflm Activated Sludge (FBAS) is a type of
Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge system. It leverages
the use of various natural and engineered media to provide
a habitat for a diverse fxed-flm bacterial culture which
metabolizes the contaminants in wastewater.
These populations of organisms live in an attached form
on fxed bed media inside the reactors, as opposed to
being in constant motion as is the case with conventional
solutions such as Activated Sludge or Moving Bed Bioflm
Reactor (MBBR).
Organica says: Providing a stationary habitat allows a
diverse and robust bioflm to grow and thrive inside the
reactors, which ultimately offer signifcantly improved
nutrient removal, energy effciency, and resiliency, all in
much less space than conventional approaches.

which house over 3000 species of microbes, aquatic fora and

But he is at his most eloquent when taking a step back from
it all and looking at the big RG picture.
I moved here to China because I believe its going to be
good for the business, of course, he says. Thats my frst
obligation. But I am genuinely passionate about the idea of our
system becoming a beacon, a way forward for the future.
When someone walks into a garden you cannot but help
get the impression that somehow its an ideal place the
Garden of Eden. Now, if you happen to have a greenhouse on
top of it even in winter and then at the same time you are
processing human waste well, thats pretty revolutionary,
especially if you situate it next to an offce block or a complex
of apartments.
He goes on to say: Traditionally, and to almost all peoples,
excreta has been the most disgusting thing. You dont want to
be close to it. You want it out of sight, out of mind. But now,
here, we are reversing that thought pattern. In our RGs its all
together again. The two opposites. The garden and the waste.
The black and the white. The good and the bad together, in
harmony, whole.
Now 90% of people who visit our plants feel this to various
degrees. They say wow. Why are they saying wow? After
all they are only walking into an industrial greenhouse. Its not
such a big deal. But still they say it. Because they are realising
that it is indeed possible to combine, to close the cycle, to
live in harmony and to take responsibility for the waste we
generate.
He fnishes by saying: We are mentioning the
unmentionable. We have brought it home if you will. This
is holistic, honest and revolutionary in its way. It is also
inevitable. After all, when you think about it we are just taking
ownership of what we have created ourselves in the frst
place.
Horace Greeley founded and edited the New York Tribune.
He prided himself on taking radical positions on all sorts of
social issues. Which prompts one to conclude that Greeley and
Bodnr would surely have got along very well. Even though
Bodnr did the unthinkable by going East rather than West.

he city of Moscow is
continuously developing and
improving its infrastructure
in order to keep up with the growth
of population, while minimising the
environmental impact of the citys
activities. Moscows infrastructure
collects the wastewater of over 14
million inhabitants into several
wastewater treatment plants. The
entire citys municipal and industrial
wastewater is sanitised before being
discharged into the natural receiving
water bodies.
It is recognised that due to the large
volumes of wastewater, both the
chemical and micro-biological impact
on the receiving water bodies should
be limited as much as possible. The
capacities of the Moscow wastewater
treatment plants - Kuryanovskiye
WWTP and Lyuberetskiye WWTP, are
among the largest in Europe. In autumn
2012, the Kuryanovskiye WWTP
completed the installation of worlds
largest ultraviolet (UV) disinfection
plant, with a capacity of 3.125 million

3

UV system, as well as the engineering
and technical implementation make it a
unique UV disinfection solution.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
One of the project challenges was to
limit the required civil construction
works by integrating a UV disinfection
system into the limited available space
of an existing contact chamber, with its
operational effuent discharge channel to
the receiving water body. The Moscow

UV system manufacturer LIT offered a
UV technology platform in a compact
modular UV system design to treat large
amounts of water in the space-limited
conditions of the Kuryanovskiye WWTP.
The supplied disinfection system was
optimised to disinfect effciently very
large fows with minimum hydraulic
resistance. The project demanded
integration of the UV disinfection stage,
without increasing the existing overall
headloss profle of the WWTP.
Both criteria for civil design and
hydraulic profle were successfully
achieved with the installation of the
system, consisting of 17 open channels.
Each channel is equipped with 5 UV
banks in series, each UV bank consisting
of two in parallel placed vertical UV
modules. With this confguration the
total hydraulic headloss over the UV
system at peak fow is less than 30 cm
w.c.
UV SYSTEM FEATURES
The UV system is ftted with a fully
automatic water level control system
to maintain the proper water level
inside the disinfection channel at all
fow rates up to the design peak fow. It
prevents the overfow of the UV system
and guarantees that all water will be
disinfected properly in addition it
assures the overall UV system headloss
to be minimised. Each UV module is
equipped with an in situ mechanical
cleaning system, which enhances the UV
system disinfection performance, and
minimises the maintenance cost.
The cleaning process is triggered
by adjustable parameters (time or UV
intensity) and is executed without
operator interference or interruption
of the UV disinfection process. The
mechanical cleaning system is operated
automatically, with an adjustable
cleaning frequency per day.
The mechanical wiping system
prevents quartz sleeve fouling build up
during the UV disinfection process. It
removes deposits from quartz sleeve
surface by mechanical wipers, which
are moved periodically along quartz
sleeves. The mechanical cleaning system
is actuated by a pneumatic cylinder.
The low pressure high output
amalgam lamps (high-wattage lamp
600W) installed in vertical modules,
with ballast cabinets located above
the UV channel, allow for compact
installation, with a small UV system
footprint. Such a design of UV module,
equipped with low pressure high
output amalgam lamps was developed
specifcally for large-scale WWTPs.
The choice for the new technological
UV platform was driven by the small
footprint of the UV plant design
and the advantageous operational
characteristics:
r Low power consumption;
r Long lamp life (more than 12 000
hours)
r Easy service and minimum
operational and maintenance labor
requirements (i.e. lamp replacement
with the UV modules remaining in the
UV channel).
The UV lamps in the vertical UV
modules are arranged in a staggered
order, to assure a reliable high intensity
disinfection path.
Because of the Moscow River having
a 1% probability of overfowing
the WWTP, preventatively the
electrical compartments are located
at the second foor above the UV
channels. UV disinfection proceses
at the Kuryanovskiye WWTP is fully
automated.
The system is equipped with an
automatic dose pacing system to
adjust lamp intensity, to control and
accommodate for variation in water
quality parameters and fow rates. All
operational information about the UV
systems operation is transmitted to a
central control center.

The completion of the UV disinfection
system at the Kuryanovskiye WWTP,
combined with the already operating
UV plant at the Lyuberetskiye WWTP
count for micro-biological sanitation of
two thirds of the total effuent entering
the Moscow water bodies.
The total treated effuent represents
50% of the total fow of the Moscow
River and 90% of its tributary the
Pekhorka River.
To prevent development of
epidemiological risks in the Moscow
water bodies, disinfection of the
discharged wastewater is required.
The chosen method of chemical
free disinfection reduces signifcantly
the micro-biological impact of the
effuent without altering the chemical
composition of the receiving waters.
With the application of a
fundamentally new UV technology
platform, one of the worlds largest UV
disinfection project for treated effuent
with a capacity of 3.15 million m

in addition to the already successful
operating UV plant in Lyuberetskiye
WWTP since 2008, provide a reliable
disinfection of the treated effuent in

regulations.
This signifcantly improves the overall
sanitary conditions and reduces the
epidemiological risk for the Moscow

hile species such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus
and E. coli may have earned bacteria a fearsome
reputation, since the dawn of time a great many
more of their kind have been quietly doing our bidding. From
the 100 trillion microorganisms in your digestive system, to
their cousins that are used to make yoghurt - the number of
bacteria which beneft the human race is huge.
For the most part the reason these bacteria are of use is
because they can eat the things which we cant, or which
are harmful to us, and excrete substances which we fnd
nutritious or otherwise valuable. But with millions of
species out there, fnding the right one for the task at hand
is important.
For example, the lactic acid bacterial species found in
your probiotic yogurt will not dissolve steel. The halomonas
titanicae species found eating the hull of the Titanic, nearly 4
km under the ocean, seemingly can.
FUSSY EATERS
Bacteria have been used for many years to treat the organic wastes in
sewage. But optimising the process is not merely a case of picking the
right little critters and setting them loose in a tank of festering sludge.
Like people, bacteria can be fckle - and they need treating right.

INDUSTRIAL WATER TREATMENT
AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2014 WWINTERNATIONAL.COM 31
Different types of bacteria thrive on
different nutrients. In the treatment of
sewage its important to have the correct
blend of organisms to eat the variety
of waste materials present. But to keep
them happy and help optimise their
consumption of wastes, the industry has
seen an increasing use of biostimulants
that increase in the digestion rate of the
organic material. And thats an area in
which Bath, UK based Advetec has been
carving itself a niche over recent years.
Weve developed different strains
of product that feed different types of
bacteria in different liquid effuents,
Craig Shaw, the companys founder and
managing director tells WWi. For want
of a better word: theyre the fve fruit
and vegetables per day which microbes
and microscopic organisms require to
get them to eat waste in liquids.
In developing its biostimulants the
company has worked with a number
of utilities, including Thames Water
and United Utilities. It has also been
working with big food companies such
as Kraft and Cadburys, as well as waste
management frms like Biffa and SITA
for leachates.
However, with a growing
understanding of the microbes used
in both Anaerobic Digestion (AD) and
composting, six or seven years ago
the company changed tack following
a project it had undertaken with a
customer. And thats where things really
get interesting.
One of our clients had bought this
machine but it wouldnt get rid of all the
different types of food waste that they
were throwing in - a very varied mix
with lots of grease, fats, oils vegetable
material, meats, everything, explains
Shaw.
Because of our understanding of
microbial activity and what gets
microbes to work much faster, we
looked at this machine and we said
really, if it had half the material in it the
machine would work fne. But because
youre putting all these different things
in its causing a bit of a caustic cocktail
for the bacteria. Theyre not fourishing
and they never will do the way that its
designed, he continues.
THEY CAME FROM THE DEEP
The company did a lot of development
on its clients in-vessel composting
machine and quickly realised that
thermophilic bacteria - composting
bacteria - wouldnt do. According to
Shaw, while these bacteria do work, the
process is slow, and if youre producing
hundreds of tonnes of waste you need
something fast.
We asked what type of bacteria
would eat all of this organic waste and
clean up the in-organic waste, all in one
machine, he explains. Well, theres a
thing out there called extremophiles -
bacteria that live in temperatures way
above 100C all the way up to 1000C.
We harvested our extremophiles
several years ago, he adds. Our
background is that were a deep
sea exploration company, so we got
the extremophiles from underwater
volcanos.
The company used these organisms
from the deep and applied them to the
concept of in-vessel composting.
What we did is create an in-vessel
composter on steroids, with a starting
temperature of about 140C to 150C
and a fnishing temperature of anything
up to 300C to 325C. We were then
able to take large quantities of organic

material and very rapidly reduce it
down to its minimum consistency.
Thats what the Bio Thermic Digester
(BTD) is, explains Shaw.
EXTREME DIGESTION
Because they are not naturally occurring
in the surface environment, Advetecs
proprietary extremophiles have to be
injected into the digester. And once
there, they need maintaining. According
to Shaw, the key to the BTD is keeping
the bacteria in peak performance.
We know exactly how to feed them
so that they eat through things as
fast as possible, he says. You might
like apples and I might like bananas.
The situation is that different types
of bacteria have different favourite
foods. When you have an organic waste
material frst of all you have to fnd out
which of the extremophiles like to eat
it. Then youve got to think about what
you put with them to have a healthy
diet so that theyre like an athlete rather
than a couch potato.
What the machine does is it takes
out all the organics and it reduces the
moisture down to less than 8%. Theres
nothing to put into landfll because the
organics that would go to landfll have
gone, continues Shaw.
Following a number of trials around
the world, the company says that the
technology is now ready for commercial
deployment. The system is modular,
with the biggest machine able to process
50 tonnes per day. Unlike composting,
its a constant feed process.
Once youve got the machine
running its extremely effcient because
one of the beauties of extremophiles
is that a lot of the organic material is
turned into water, but its also turned
into heat. We utilise that heat in a heat
recirculation system in the machine,
which means that once weve got it
up to temperature we have minimal
electrical costs, adds Shaw.
The only outputs are said to be
distilled water, heat, a waste derived
fuel and a small amount of digestate
that even the extremophiles cant
eat. This is the burnt toast that the
organisms have merely nibbled at.
Its the hardest part of the carbon
within the food chain, explains Shaw.
Its a really dark brown material that
looks like coffee grinds. Its organic in
nature but only 3% to 5% of what went
in. The digestate produced by AD is
typically 70% of what went in.
OFF TO MARKET
The ability to recover clean water from
organic effuents and wastewater has
been an important asset as the company
has moved towards commercialisation.
Weve just done two big installations
at food factories in the Middle East and
their primary concern is getting the
water back for process as they use a lot
of water for cleaning, says Shaw.
By recuperating the water alone the
machine will pay for itself in about 18
months, without counting the savings
in disposal costs for the organic material
itself.
But its not just in the Middle East

market around three years ago, and
two years ago it installed three pilot
plants that it moved around the country
to three or four different wastewater
treatment companies.
Because of the volume reduction
achieved, the company found an eager
market for processing sewage sludge.
According to Shaw, while in many
cases sewage sludge does have good
fertiliser value, globally there are now
pharmaceuticals making their way
through the wastewater and into the
residue cake.
Youve also got the issue of heavy
metals concentrations rising in certain
population centres, which means the
sludge from large utilities has to go to
landfll because its contaminated with
heavy metals and cant be used as a
fertiliser, he says.
In those instances Advetec says that
it is putting bio thermic digesters in to
process the organic material and reduce
the volume by 90% to 95% - and cutting
the disposal cost accordingly.
What happened was that the
DEP issued the frst ever permit for a
machine to digest and remove organic
waste, explains Shaw. We put one on
trial with the DEP for nine months and
they tested the emissions, what went in,
what came out you name it they did
it and thats led to lots more enquiries
and projects going ahead.
Our frst big client is a company
called Peach Tree in Atlanta, Georgia.
Theyve just signed a 10 year deal for
machines to treat wastewater treatment
sludge. The US market is probably the
biggest growth area for us, and it really
took off last September - its snowballing
over there, he says.
THE FUTURE
The company currently has 17 BTDs
in service, but Shaw says that interest
is rapidly growing, with a further 47
machines on order for delivery over the
next two years.
Our frst really big orders started
coming in from the US in August last
year, and then the Middle East by
October last year. From there it took
off.
And with its ability to reduce organic
waste volumes so signifcantly, while
leaving behind a dry waste derived fuel,
there has also been considerable interest
from the waste management industry.
It may be early days for Advetecs
BTD technology, but with the help of
their superheros from the deep, it seems
to have got off to an extremely good
start.

INDUSTRIAL WATER WASTEWATER TREATMENT
WWINTERNATIONAL.COM AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2014 34
F
or already quite some time
Bodycote, a provider of services
for the improvement of metal
and alloy properties, was looking at
alternatives for its existing wastewater
treatment process technology.
Previously, generated wastewater
was neutralised and then treated in an
ion exchanger to remove heavy metal
pollution. Purifed water was then
disposed to the municipal wastewater
network.
However, operation of the system
involved a high work load and the
quality of the purifed water not good
enough for recycling back into the
process.
The objective was to fnd a process
producing less cost, consuming
less fresh water and offering a high
reliability. In addition Bodycote wanted
to standardise equipment for locations
in multiple locations around the world.
Upon further examination, it was
considered that a zero liquid discharge
(ZLD) process should be developed.
This was so that water can recycled back
into production and used as process
water.
Contact with a wastewater evaporator
supplier, H2O GmbH, saw the start of a
process being developed. The frst phase
saw the clients process wastewater
studied before phase two, which saw
the economic viability checked. In the
last phase the new process had to be
verifed in production scale. H2O then
installed a demonstration system at one
of Bodycotes production sites. Over
several weeks the wastewater generated
in the surface technology processes
was treated in a Vacudest wastewater
evaporator.
After it was shown that the quality or
the purifed water was very constant,
even after several weeks, successful
trials for the recycling into the
production process were carried out.
The recycling of the purifed water has
two additional advantages for Bodycote.
First of all the distillate leaving the
Vacudest wastewater evaporator is
warm, thus the purifed water must not
be pre-heated prior to using it as rinsing
water in the production process.
Previously, all this fresh water had
to be demineralised prior to using it
as rinsing water. The distillate from
the Vacudest wastewater evaporator is
already free of salts, this process step
is not needed. As a result, the site has
reduced fresh water consumption by
more than 95%.
In the meantime a second Bodycoat
site has exchanged its wastewater
treatment system for a wastewater
evaporator. Other sites are expected to
follow in the nearer future.

A
s climate change experts warn
that extreme and intense
volumes of rainfall are likely to
become more frequent, ensuring surging
water fows can be controlled without
harming drainage and sewer networks
is essential; both stormwater and
wastewater drainage may be at risk.
A major potential problem occurs
in pipework infrastructure where
signifcant abrupt level changes release
waters potential energy. A vertical
drop of only a few metres results in
potential destruction of pipework
through vibration and stress from water
hammer and glugging of entrained air.
Conventional solutions have focused
on gradual water energy dissipation
methods such as spillways, weirs,
fumes or cascades. But as space
constraints and the cost of construction
increase in urban environments, such
solutions can be practically impossible
to locate and sometimes uneconomic
to build. In many cases, fnding a
solution which combines safe water
control within a vertical drop becomes a
priority.
TYPICAL CHALLENGES
One solution developed decades ago
offers water engineers a different
approach that still feels refreshingly
leading-edge. This is the concept of a
vertical drop shaft using a vortex to
safely brake the falling water.
More recent enhancements mean
the technology now delivers high
performance within a much more
compact space than previously.
Retroft applications can be installed
within an existing vertical access shaft
construction, aiding safe personnel
access and minimising additional
construction.

increase sewer and drainage capacity
would have meant constructing a
new 50 metre shaft through limestone
bedrock.
Wessex Water project engineer Andy
Roberts explains: The existing sewers
within the area were struggling during
heavy rain. Excavating a new 50 metre
shaft through the limestone bedrock
to reach the sewer would have cost
hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Through the engineering contractors
on the project, we discussed the
concept of a drop pipe with Hydro
International, he says. They suggested
inserting a Vortex Drop Shaft through
the access shaft and constructing an
Energy Dissipation Unit at the bottom.
A ship-in-a-bottle solution was
devised to construct the drop shaft
via the existing access shaft, avoiding
major construction and minimising
neighbourhood disruption.
The solution worked like keyhole
surgery; all the components were fat
packed and inserted down the hole to
be re-assembled inside at the bottom;
then the pipework was lowered down
from above. The Drop Shaft is now
discharging up to 680 litres/second
(l/s) down a 50m vertical drop from a
newly laid local sewer to the Northern
Intercept Sewer.
IMPROVING SAFETY ON NEW
MIDDLE EAST HIGHWAY
For a new build stormwater handling
application, as part of multimillion
dollar infrastructure development in
advance of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in
Qatar, the same drop shaft technology is
being employed to support drainage on
the four-lane, 81km Salwa International
Highway.
The drop shaft has been installed to
control stormwater runoff over a drop
of more than 6m from the expressway at
Dohas Industrial Interchange.
While Qatar is overall a dry climate,
winter rain storms can be intense and
quickly cause localised fooding. To
reduce the danger of surface water on
the expressway at the interchange, large
volumes of water falling from height
must be controlled and drained away
rapidly to avoid localised fooding.
Stormwater drained from the
overhead roadway has to fall more than
six metres to the receiving stormwater

Features in the supplied drop

smaller pipe diameter to be used
when compared with alternative drop

contained unit, the drop shaft can be

were separated from the danger of

ENVIRONMENTAL FLOW
SOLUTION
Meanwhile, back in the UK and one
of Britains largest road schemes, drop
shaft technology provided vital, low-
impact surface water control as part of
the construction of the new 7km Church
Village bypass built in South Wales.
The challenges in managing surface
water and minimising its effect on the
countryside and the local environment
meant careful planning was required.
We decided to divert the ground
water [at one point] under the new
bypass along a culvert built over an
old rail track bed, comments Simon
Edwards, principal engineer, water and
environment, for Atkins, the consultant
on the project. From there, the water
had to descend around four metres to a
small local stream bed and then into the
River Taff.
Uncontrolled, this drop of water
would have scoured away the
stream bed, and caused unacceptable
environmental damage.
An alternative solution to the vertical
drop shaft had been to build a cascade
to take the fow down over successive
weirs. This would have involved
considerable and expensive earthworks
through the rail embankment; it was
deemed much simpler and incurred less
visual impact to install the drop shaft.

infrastructure was facilitated with
a cost-saving solution that enabled
construction to be completed within a
tight 14-week project window.
The solution involved installing the
Hydro Vortex Drop Shaft in an existing
4m bore access shaft within the dock,
said Len Burgess, project engineer for
Hyder Consulting. It takes the sewage
14 metres from street level down to the
existing main sewage line below water
level in the dock.
At Swansea, the 150mm bore Drop
Shaft is designed for a maximum fow
volume of 20 l/s. It is sited in a 4m
bore foul access shaft which had been
located in the dock structure to access
the sewage outfow pipeline installed
following renewal of the areas sewage
infrastructure in the 1990s.
Barry Louth, contract manager
for civil engineering company Alun
Griffths adds: The main sewer is
now around eight metres below the
mean tide level which complicated
the overall installation. The Drop
Shaft was installed during a 14 week
window within the two year sewage
infrastructure project.
Meticulous planning between
ourselves, Hyder Consulting and
Hydro International enabled successful
installation.
Offering a proven solution to
the potential damage to drainage
pipework and water courses caused
by uncontrolled vertical water fall,
this technology has demonstrated its
suitability in a wide variety of schemes,
where conventional approaches are
too expensive, too large and time
consuming or at risk of failure.

In a bid to reduce the 9 million it
spends annually on electricity to
run 300 blowers, UK utility Severn
Trent Water trialled a Blade
Compressor as an alternative
to the traditional blowers and
compressors. If used across all of
its wastewater treatment plants, a
potential saving of 1.8 million per
year could be saved.
By Steve Lindsey
S
evern Trent Water is one of
the largest of the ten regulated
water and wastewater services
companies in England and Wales,
employing more than 5,000 people and
serving around four million households
and businesses across the heart of the
UK.
In the UK, Severn Trent Waters
territory stretches from the Bristol
Channel to the Humber and from
mid-Wales to the east Midlands. It
delivers 1.8 million cubic metres of
drinking water each day to customers
through 47,000 kilometres of water
mains. Wastewater is returned to
the environment through a system
comprising 93,000 kilometres of sewers
and more than 1,000 wastewater
treatment works.
HIGH ENERGY COSTS
Severn Trents wastewater treatment
works operate around the clock,
handling more than 2.5 million cubic
metres of wastewater every day. The
utility spends around 9 million a year
on electricity to run 300 blowers at its
treatment works, more than half of the
entire cost of wastewater treatment in
the region. Industry estimates suggest
that 1% of all of the UKs electricity is
consumed by compressors used for the
aeration of wastewater at the nations
utility businesses.
Given the cost of electricity
consumption and the associated CO2
emissions Severn Trent Water has
been investigating alternative solutions
with lower energy costs, improved
operational effciency and reduced
environmental impact.
BLADE OF GLORY?
As a result, Severn Trent went onto
trial Lontras Blade Compressor. With
a traditional piston and cylinder, as the
piston drops down in the cylinder it
draws in air above it and, as it goes up
again, it compresses air in front of it.
In comparison, the Blade Compressor
is best imagined as a piston and a
cylinder, but with the piston wrapped
around inside. There is a constantly
open intake port, without valves. As
the piston rotates, it induces a volume
of air behind it in the same way as
the piston dropping down in the

cylinder. As it gets back to the starting point, it has induced
a complete volume behind it. But unlike the traditional
piston and cylinder that has to stop and change in direction,
the blade passes through the disc with the volume that was
trapped behind the piston now in front. This means that it
has an almost continuous cycle of inducing air behind and
compressing air in front.
Severn Trent worked for over a year with Lontra on a
study evaluating its entire wastewater estate. Following
initial results, Severn Trent agreed to part-fund a full scale
trial alongside the Carbon Trust. The Blade Compressors
performance and reliability was then validated against
existing machines, in a real time production environment, at
Worcester Wastewater Treatment Works.
Mark Jones, Severn Trents wastewater research
and development manager, said: To make the test as
representative as possible, only the existing blower and
motor were replaced, with the Blade Compressor ftted into
an existing enclosure and running from an existing variable
speed drive. This ensured that only the gains in the blower
technology - and not those from optimising the supporting
systems and drives - were captured.
In addition, the conventional blower that the Blade
Compressor was to be compared against had been replaced
just six months before the trial commenced, ensuring that the
solution wouldnt have an unfair advantage by being tested
against an ageing or worn alternative.
RESULTS
The Blade Compressor was frst run at Worcester in September
2012, running full time as a duty blower without issues
for more than seven months. The sites instrumentation and
supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA)
showed that the conventional blowers used more than 20%
more electricity to deliver an equivalent amount of air when
compared to the Blade Compressor
Severn Trent Waters chief executive Tony Wray, in his
presentation of preliminary results to the City in May 2013,
said that if the Blade Compressor was rolled out across all
of Severn Trents wastewater treatment works, the company
could save more than 1.8 million a year in electricity costs,
with a commensurate reduction in the companys overall
carbon emissions of 3%. The savings prompted Severn Trent to
consider a large scale replacement programme.
It was then decided that the on-site instrumentation for
the Blade Compressor and the comparative blower should
be upgraded to laboratory standard. Consultant ABB was
engaged to specify and supply the instrumentation and the
fowmeters were replaced by Orifce plates to ISO standard
5167.
Data from this instrumentation was logged for seven
months between June 2013 and December 2013 over all
conditions, from summer to winter, to provide operational
results in a fully operational wastewater treatment works.
Severn Trent said: Our upgraded instrumentation showed
that from summer to winter the Lontra Blade Compressor
used, on average, 21.2% less electricity to deliver an equivalent
amount of air when compared to the existing blowers.
Importantly for us, as well as being effcient, the machine
is simple, using well understood and proven materials and
engineering. The bearings are traditional and the rotor runs at
low speed, being directly coupled to the motor without step-
up gearboxes or belt drives.

A
ny water pump exhibits
the effects of wear and tear
over time. The function of a
water pump is the result of the fne-
tuned cooperation of many different
components. The emphasis of the
deterioration and wear study should
be on the entire water pump train
as a system rather than on isolated
components.
Several mechanisms can cause the
deterioration and wear of a water pump.
The Fouling is caused by the adherence
of particles to the water pump fow path
surfaces. The Corrosion is the loss
or the deterioration of the component
material exposed to the water (caused by
the chemical reactions). The Erosion is
the abrasive removal of material from the
fow path by hard particles impinging on
the pump fow surfaces. The Abrasion
is caused when a rotating surface rubs on
a stationary surface. Foreign objects can
also cause some damages to the pump
components.
DETERIORATION AND WEAR
Three major effects determine the
performance deterioration of water
pumps:
r The increased clearances
r The changes in the rotating/static part
geometry
r The changes in the water fow path
surface quality.
The stage deterioration (and wear)
has a cumulative effect. A degraded
stage will create different exit conditions
compared to a new stage, and each
subsequent stage will operate further
away from its design point. While
in a new water pump all stages
and components were working at
their optimum effciency point, the
deterioration (and wear) will force
all stages to work at off-optimum
effciencies.
The deterioration/wear can also
limit the water pump operating range.
Typically, a degraded water pump will
have reduced margins (such as NPSH
(Net Positive Suction Head) margins,
and others). The pressure ratio and
the fow are not independent, and the
effciency is determined by the resulting
operating point. The centrifugal water
pump deterioration will shift the
pressure-fow relationship to a lower
effciency. In a comprehensive study,
the deterioration/wear effects which
normally occur together should be
separated. The deterioration/wear
Pumps are an essential tool for the
industry, providing the necessary
pressure to shift water for
distribution and processing. This

and wear develops and affects

will impact the pressure ratio, the
effciency, and the water fow capacity
(the degree depending on the type of the
deterioration).
Since in many instances, the operating
point on a water pump map is different
between the new water pump and
the degraded water pump, the actual
effciency can be affected by the
deterioration/wear (and the move of
the operating point). Maintaining of
the water pump component clearances
is, in particular, a problem in some
water pumps. This is because of various
dynamic loadings and changes in the
temperature (between the ambient
temperature and the operating
temperature).
Studies have shown the increase in
clearances can affect the water pump
performance. In a study on a water
pump, the clearance was increased from
2.5% (the design value) to 4.6% and this
led to approximately 7% reduction in
the pressure coeffcient, and an around
2.3% effciency loss.
The Corrosion tends to alter the
water fow path in two ways; it increases
the surface roughness, but it might also
remove the materials from the critical
water pump components.
Increased surface roughness can cause
thicker boundary layers on the both the
moving components (such as impellers)
and the stationary components (such as
the parts of the water pump casing in
contact with the water), and thus reduce
the fow capacity. Furthermore, changes
in the fow capacity of a water pump can
subsequently alter the operating point.
When the deterioration/wear of a
water pump led to the material removal
(for example, at a pump impeller),
complex effects and interactions might
be seen. The fow capacity can also be
limited. The fow angles could also be
deviated with some important effciency
and pressure effects. The erosion
can cause fow angles to deviate (for
example, fow angles in impellers).
This will lead to a reduced effciency.
Deposits on the water path both can
increase the fow path surface roughness
and might (if thick enough) decrease the
fow area of the water pump.
Solid particles which travel through
the water fow path can be subjected
to dynamic forces. The pumped
water carries these particles though
the pump where they may impact on
the pump parts and cause the solid
particle erosion. As these particles lose
momentum they move outward toward
the tips of the rotating parts (such as
impellers) and can cause erosion or
lodge underneath some parts.
ELECTRIC MOTOR
The electric motor deterioration and
wear might be identifed as the rotor
assembly problems, the misalignment,
the unbalance, the eccentricity and the
stator mechanical/electrical faults. Too
often, the bearings of an electric motor
can be a source of trouble. The electrical
hardware of the electric motors (such as
the coil, the winding, other), if properly
sized and manufactured, will last for a
long-time.
Insulations may degrade in a
relatively shorter time. Latest techniques
such as the ultra-wide band partial
discharge techniques can be employed
to identify the insulation deterioration/
wear. Generally, the electrical system
deterioration and wear can be evaluated
by measuring the voltage imbalance,
the high harmonic content of currents
and voltages, and other electrical
parameters.
EFFICIENCY/FLOW REDUCTION
The effciency losses of around 2-6%
have been reported for some surface
roughness built-up when compared
with smooth surface of new water pump
components. It was also reported that
the most pronounced differences appear
at the optimum operating point (the BEP
(Best Effciency Point) of a water pump),
whereas the far off-optimum effciency
is less affected.
The surface roughness losses could
be in the same order of magnitude as
losses because of clearance changes. The
reduction in the water pump effciency
as the result of the pump deterioration
and wear was observed in many studies.
In several cases of VSD (variable
frequency drive) driven water pumps,
the pressure-fow relationship of
the pump operating points remain
unchanged.
This is because it is determined by the
pump control system, but the pumps
have to run faster, and consume more
power for any point on the pressure-
fow curve once deteriorated.
In the multi-stage water pumps,
more deposits could occur on the frst
stages rather than the last stages. The
deterioration has usually shifted the
pump operating line to a lower fow-
rate, a lower pressure ratio and a lower
effciency.
Different studies have shown further
that the deterioration/wear not only
leads to reduced stage performance,
but also to additional losses because
individual stages no longer operate at
their design (or rated) fow coeffcients.
Severe deteriorations of a water
pump and signifcant reductions in the
water pump effciency can occur when
the material is removed because of the
erosion or the corrosion.
Usually at a constant load (a constant
shaft power), a considerable drop in
the water pump effciency can cause a
reduction in the fow and the discharge
pressure.
The operating points of a deteriorated
water pump were consistently at
lower fow coeffcients compared to a
new water pump. The fow capacity
reduction has mainly been the result
of the fouling or the increased
clearances.
WATER PUMPS AT PART-LOAD
It was observed that smaller water
pumps may be more susceptible to the
deterioration and wear. However, there
has been no universal agreement on this
issue and some previous reports reached
exactly the opposite conclusion.
It is suspected that the intricate
interactions that defne the amount of
deterioration/wear as a function of a
certain level of ingested material or of a
certain amount of material removal, are
very machine specifc and do not lend
themselves to simplifed rules of thumb.
A relative loss in the pump effciency
can be lower compared to the full-
load/rated-load (the same amount of
the deterioration/wear). The fow and
the discharge pressure usually change
relatively lower at the part-load as the
result of the deterioration/wear.
A proper water pump design/
selection and the selection of the inlet
fltration, together with the proper
maintenance and operating practices,
can signifcantly affect the level of
performance deterioration/wear and
thus time between repairs or overhauls
of a water pump.

INTERNATIONAL SHOW PREVIEW
WWINTERNATIONAL.COM AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2014 44
WaterWorld Middle East 2014 comes to Abu Dhabi in October in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Sewerage
Services Company (ADSSC). Comprising an exhibition foor featuring leading companies in the water
and wastewater sector, WaterWorld Middle East is accompanied by a dedicated peer reviewed conference
programme, developed by the industry for the industry.
MEETING ABU DHABIS
HIGH WATER DEMANDS
S
purred on by a buoyant economy
and population growth, the GCC
countries are looking to invest
$130 billion over the next decade to
meet future demand and introduce
new measures to achieve long-term
sustainable water and energy supplies.
With Abu Dhabis population
currently forecasted to exceed fve
million by 2030, demand for potable
water is expected to double. Three major
desalination projects are currently in
the works but increased water demand
will mean further capacity is needed.
One of these projects is the Al Zawra
independent water project that will use
reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to
produce 136,400 m
3
/day in the Emirate
of Ajman.
A total of 39 million cubic meters per
day of desalination capacity is expected
to be added between 2010 and 2020 in
the Middle East region. This translates
into an approximate investment of
between USD 45 - 50 billion.
WaterWorld Middle East 2014
will have two conference sessions
on desalination: Thermal
Desalination Energy Optimisation
and also Membrane Operational
Improvements.
Water consumption rates are already
high in the Emirate State with current
estimations putting unaccounted for
distribute desalinated water losses at
20%.
Plans have been set out to use new
technologies and reduce this by 10-15%
by 2030. Utility Sentry will address
this issue in a presentation entitled
Water Losses, Leak Detection and
Notifcation.
S Delegates will have the chance to visit the STEP Visitor Centre in Abu Dhabi
and fnd out more about the multi-billion dirham project

The ADSSC is undertaking an extensive expansion of its
collection network including a strategic tunnel engineering
project (STEP). This multi-billion dirham programme of
work will deliver collection capacity which is expected to
be suffcient to meet growth in the coming decades. It has a
planned working life of at least 100 years.
As event partner, ADSSC will be providing a keynote
address to open the even and giving an update presentation
on STEP. Delegates will also have the opportunity to visit the
STEP visitor centre ahead of the event as part of a technical
tour, as well as MASDAR city.
Four major wastewater treatment works in Abu Dhabi and
in Al Ain have been commissioned to replace and expand the
capacity of the existing plants, which are coming to the end of
their working lives.
Financed in the same way as the independent water and
power production plants, these independent sewage treatment
plants can be expanded asneeded.
In the past water defcits have been met by adding
additional desalination capacity. A cheaper alternative
that helps bridge the gap between demand and supply is
water reuse. Its can also be a lot cheaper to produce than
desalinated water. For example, recovering a cubic meter of
wastewater can typically cost between USD 0.15 - 0.20. This
compares to USD $1 per cubic meter cost for desalinated
water.
Wastewater reuse and water recycling is going to be a major
theme of WaterWorld Middle East 2014, with a session on
Wastewater Reuse Technologies, including case studies
on MBBR (moving bed bioflm reactor), UV (ultraviolet
treatment) and reed bed technology.
A new topic to this years agenda is Asset Management.
John Woodhouse, managing director of the Woodhouse
Partnership will be delivery a presentation asset management
in utility networks. He wil be joined by David Harris from
Omans Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW)
and Tim Kay from Black and Veatch.
Abu Dhabi aspires to become one of the most effcient users
of water in the world. To fnd out how, visit WaterWorld

Lightweight composite access covers
Material decisions for bioenergy
US based manufacturer Fibrelite has seen a tremendous increase in inquiries for their lightweight composite access covers
from industries keen to move away from the traditionally used metal and concrete and change specifcations to composites.
One application in which Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is being widely adopted worldwide and changing specifcations away
from metal is with manhole access and service trench covers. Lightweight composite covers that provide safe and easy access
eliminating unsafe manual handling issues are replacing aging concrete and heavy cast iron access covers all over the world. By
using lighter materials, operational injuries are prevented, work sites are made safer and ease of installation and maintenance is
made available to utility workers and contractors.
The design of these lightweight covers incorporates up to two lifting points for specially designed lifting handles. These allow
the operator to remove the cover without trapping fngers or bending over thus maximising the safety of the lifting technique.
The weight is kept close to the body preventing back injury; one of the main causes of absence from work and personal injury
claims.
By introducing the pigment directly into the resin system
during the molding process, Fibrelite ensures that the
color is not merely applied on the surface of the cover.
Instead, the coloring is evenly and completely infused
throughout the composite cover and will not fade or
wear over time.
FRP composite manhole covers are ideal for problem
areas, particularly those prone to skid related accidents.
Traditional cast iron covers quickly become polished and
therefore provide a poor level of grip which can lead to serious accidents through increased risk of skidding and slipping, even
more so when wet.
Fibrelites access covers are lightweight, durable and very strong. They are manufactured using high-technology Resin
Transfer Moulding (RTM) production methods to create a highly engineered, monolithic composite product.
Technical experts from Fibrelite will be on hand at this years WEFTEC to demonstrate new product innovations. Visit Stand
7913, Hall 11, and fnd out just how lightweight Fibrelite covers are!

Since its initial development, the Lipp
tank system has been used to construct
over 50,000 tanks in various industries
and more than 80 countries across
the world. The Tannhausen farm in
Germany is a mixed enterprise with
both arable and livestock production
and the AD system was designed to
match the substrates produced by the
farm. The Verinox material arrived on
site as a large roll of sheet metal. This
was fed into a series of rolling machines
positioned around where the base of the
tank is.
The rollers start to form the tank by
forming the lower edge to a certain
profle, then, as the leading edge
completes the frst lap, the lower edge is
folded together with the top edge of the
next layer. Once the tank reaches about
2m in height, the top ring is cut level
and the roof is installed. At the same
time a gas hood can be installed in the
digester to capture the biogas before it
is piped away to be burnt or stored. As
the tank continues to gain height, any
pipes or valves that are required can
be installed from ground level rather
than using access equipment, which
would be the case in a conventional tank
build. Once the design height has been
reached, the bottom edge of the tank is
cut level and the rollers are reversed,
which lowers the fnished tank into
position on the foundations, where the
ground fxings are installed. This allows
the insulation and exterior cladding to
be installed along with the pipe work,
valves, pumps and agitators.
The whole project was completed on
time and on budget, with the completed
plant capable of producing 570 kWh of
electricity, suffcient for 80 households.

Urban water corporation Wannon Water has chosen Monos
InviziQ pressure sewer system for the Dutton Way project
in Portland, Victoria. The Dutton Way residential project
currently houses 180 properties which are serviced by septic
sewage tanks. This fgure will increase to 314 homes, all of
which will have the option to install the sewage pumping
system that feeds into the existing Portland sewer network.
Designed as an alternative to conventional gravity sewering
options, InviziQ provides controlled transfer of sewage,
but because it does not rely on gravity it offers the freedom
to install sewers in any area, irrespective of the terrain, slope,
environmental sensitivity or topography. It features a network
constructed from small diameter pipe, and can be installed
either in narrow trenches or via directional drilling.
The system uses advanced PCB-based control technology
and versatile software allowing it to self-monitor and run
diagnostic tests to ensure that the system is operating
effciently. It can also support two-way telemetry for remote
monitoring, and multiple InviziQ systems can be linked to
enable centralised network management
