‘Come Home to the Country’ in 2008 and attend the International Plowing Match in
Teeswater, Ontario September, 16-20. The largest industry in the county is farming, so why

Bruce County’s country roads lend themselves naturally and beautifully to touring.
Quiet and well-surfaced, they’re jam-packed with scenic diversity, ups and downs,
and twists and turns. Using the free Grey-Bruce Visitor Map cyclists can spin their
own tour following shorelines for example, or linking lighthouses to gardens and
other attractions.

Stepping Out
Bruce County worships trails; it has over 1000 km worth! Its most prized
possession is the Bruce Trail, running atop of the grand ridge of the Niagara
Escarpment. The county’s 156-km-long segment of the Bruce Trail is indis-
putably the most spectacular and rugged section of the world-famous, long
distance footpath. Here, hikers can actually enjoy multi-day treks with food,
lodging and luggage transfers with the Home-to-Home Network

Marine Park, offshore of Tobermory, is site to 22 shipwrecks – mostly
schooners, barges and steamers, many dating back to the mid-1800s.
Non-divers can see them too via glass-bottom boat tours; the water is
exceptionally clear. As an added attraction, the lake’s floor bed features
the below-surface continuum of the Niagara Escarpment.

Renowned for scuba diving, Canada’s first underwater park has crystal clear water and 22
shipwrecks! However, one needn’t be a diver to see down below. Glass-bottom boat tours

MacGregor Point Provincial Park

On the shore of Lake Huron, MacGregor has a 7-km-long series of sandy coves plus different
forest and wetland habitats, all laced by easy trails, most of which are open to biking too.
Ideal for families, the park is naturally entertaining with exceptional wildlife viewing, espe-
cially for birds. A dozen yurts offer an alternative to camping, and make a winter visit a

Sauble Falls Provincial Park

From waterfall-side boardwalks, visitors have a front row seat to watching rainbow trout and
Chinook salmon in their struggle to leap over Sauble Falls to spawn upstream. The spectacle

Green Aroma Saugeen Valley Conservation Areas

There’s an exceptional amount of greenspace in the Bruce. The county boasts two
national parks, three provincial parks, two conservation authorities, provincial nature
reserves and – not least – protected land all along the mighty ridge of the Niagara
Escarpment, which is designated as a World Biosphere Reserve. In the Bruce, nature
has room to thrive.
For a peaceful camping destination, consider Brucedale on Lake Huron or Saugeen Bluffs on
the Saugeen River. For a family or romantic day getaway visit Headquarters with its
streams, ponds, trails, sulphur springs, and hundreds of ducks and geese.

Dramatic in Droves
Thousands of birds funnel through the Bruce Peninsula each spring and fall while 150
different species stay to make the Bruce their home. But more than big migratory
waves and arousing summer displays is the wondrous wilderness setting. In the
Bruce, chances are you’ll have the trail, the sites, the backdrop and the birds all to
yourself. To meet other enthusiasts come to the Huron Fringe Birding Festival in late-

MacGregor Point Provincial Park

Site of the Huron Fringe Birding Festival in late-May, early-June, MacGregor is a birding
hotspot; more than 200 species have been sighted here. Songbird watching is exceptional in
spring and fall. Also, the park’s diverse habitats host numerous breeding species including
Canada Warbler, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
Chantry Island
Offshore of Southampton, this Canadian Wildlife Sanctuary is host to a large number of
nesting waterbirds including Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and Black-crowned Night
Herons. The birds can be seen easily by spotting scope, but guided tours of the island and its
historic lighthouse are also available June to mid-September (www.chantryisland.com,
519-797-5862 or 866-797-5862).
Isaac Lake
Birders can drive right into this large wetland north of Wiarton, notable for its nesting marsh
birds such as Sandhill Crane, American Bittern, Sora Rail, Virginia Rail, Hooded Merganser,
Marsh Wren, and Black Tern. The experience here at sunrise and sunset is just magical.
Ferndale Flats
Habitat that’s prairie-like, the agricultural land surrounding Ferndale is home to nesting
meadow species including Brewer’s Blackbird, Upland Sandpiper, Bobolink, and Eastern
Meadowlark. Birds sit on fenceposts, the back roads are quiet, the veiw is panoramic and
the spotting is easy.
Black Creek Provincial Park/Stokes Bay
Out of sinc with the rest of the peninsula, Black Creek encompasses a unique northern
ecosystem that draws many migrants and hard to find breeders such as Magnolia Warbler,
Olive-sided Flycatcher, and Golden-crowned Kinglette. Adjacent Stokes Bay is one of the
county’s best spots for spying on migrating shorebirds and ducks; bring a spotting scope.
Bruce Peninsula National Park
With its wide array of habitats the park features a large diversity of both migrant and breed-
ing birds. The creek between Cyprus and Horse lakes draws many warblers during May. In
June, the forests along Emmett Lake Rd are particularly good for colourful breeders including
Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Blackburnian Warbler, and Black-throated Blue
Warbler. The 20-m-high observation tower in the park’s visitors centre provides the perfect
perch for watching migrating hawks launch off the peninsula in spring.
Cabot Head/Dyer’s Bay
Spring or fall, drive out to the lighthouse to see why Cabot Head has been designated as an
“Important Bird Area” in Canada. Offshore in Dyer’s Bay, large numbers of Red-necked
Grebes congregate in late-April along with White-winged Scoters, Long-tailed Ducks and
Loons.

Rural Gardens of Grey Bruce
A collective of gardeners has created a marvelous form of horticultural show-
and-tell. Rural Gardens of Grey and Bruce Counties is an organization of both
hobbyist and professional gardeners that not only welcome visitors but also
share their green thumb secrets. The nearly three-dozen member sites range
from internationally recognized gardens to lush organic crops to sanctuaries
for butterflies. Some gardens have decorations including sculptures, toy trains,
miniature villages and unusual grapevine structures. Visit www.ruralgardens.ca

Precious & Pretty
Extreme and unusual habitats make for strange and remarkable plant life in Bruce
County. Escarpment cliffs, alvars, dolostone bedrock shores, marl fens and sand dunes
are just some of the environments that challenge plants and promote diversity. Not
only does the county boast a kaleidoscope of nearly 1500 plant species, it has one of
the highest concentrations of orchids on the continent with 44 species. Fern diversity
is also impressive with 50 species. One needn’t be a botanist to appreciate the many
curiosities. To assist in the search and identification of orchids and ferns, two locally
produced guidebooks are readily available. Please tread lightly; protect our plants.

Oliphant Fen, Red Bay, Petrel Point
On the shore of Lake Huron near the base of the Bruce Peninsula, low sandy areas flooded
for most of the year are host to several fens. These grassy wetlands feature carnivorous
plants and orchids. In late-June look for Showy orchids; their pink and white booty-shape
flowers stand out above the crowd of sedges and grasses. Oliphant Fen welcomes visitors
with a boardwalk and interpretive signs.
Dorcas Bay (Singing Sands)
The variety of habitats is what makes Dorcas Bay a hot spot for plants and led to the site’s
protection in 1962. Among a profusion of wildflowers are orchids, including Ram's Head
Lady Slipper. In mid-June the fen is alive with Rose Pogonias interspersed with the insect-
eating Linear-leaved Sundews and Pitcher Plants.
Lake Huron Alvars
Natural pavements of limestone, alvars are at their best when the Lakeside Daisies are in
bloom in early-June. This yellow daisy is one of the rarest flowers in Ontario, though it is
common on certain alvars in the Tobermory area. The big cracks that run through alvars also
hold many treasures including the cute Maidenhair Spleenwort. Globally rare habitat, alvars
are extremely sensitive; please stay on trails. One excellent site lies at the end of Singing
Sands Trail in Bruce Peninsula National Park.
Escarpment Cliffs
On the cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment running up the east coast of the Bruce Peninsula,
gnarled eastern white cedars, often hanging upside down, are amongst the oldest trees in
North America – some over 1000 years old. Good places to see them are at the Lion's
Head Nature Reserve or in Bruce Peninsula National Park. Look too for ferns like the Smooth
Cliffbrake growing in crevices at the base of the cliffs.
Flowerpot Island
Five kilometers offshore of Tobermory in Fathom Five National Marine Park, Flowerpot
Island is best known among floral enthusiasts for its small population of Round-leaved
Orchids. Many other orchid species including Large Round Leaved Orchid and Heart Leaved
Twayblade are found on the island. Flowerpot is also renowned for its ferns, notably the
Wall Rue, Ostrich and Northern Holly.

Fly Fishing
The Saugeen River is one of the largest watersheds in Southern Ontario and the number of
pools, combined with little angling pressure, make the river one of the top fly fishing
destinations in the province. The headwaters of the Saugeen have abundant mayfly hatches
and the incredible “classic trout water” affords ample opportunity for large Brown Trout and
abundant Brook Trout in the 8-12 inch range.

The folks in Bruce County have a passion for cross-country skiing. They’ve formed
ski clubs, secured land for use, and developed trail networks. Most trails are track-
set and a few include groomed laneways for skate-skiing. There are also marked
routes for backcountry exploration.

Snowshoeing
The real, true-blue, great Canadian snowshoe experience awaits. Snowfall in the
Bruce is abundant. Untracked trails are plentiful, as are scenic rewards. An after-
noon trek can lead to a cliff edge with a lookout, down to a cave, past an icefall,
amidst animal tracks galore. Follow the Bruce Trail or pick a park. For snowshoe
rentals, contact our year-round outfitters (see pg 13).

Winter Camping
In Bruce County, winter camping needn’t be a cold experience. Indeed, with the
rental of a yurt at MacGregor Point Provincial Park, the experience can be warm
and cozy. The park’s yurts are small, insulated huts with electric heat and bunk
beds. Each comes with an outdoor barbecue. In addition, the park’s nearby comfort
station is heated and provides hot showers. Of course, if that sounds too cushy for
your adventurous spirit, come instead to Bruce Peninsula National Park, the perfect
place to do the real thing.

Mingling the past with the present, the museum uses modern and interactive techniques to
showcase a thousand years and more of history in Bruce County. From the ice age to the
military, and from aboriginal tools to the telephone, the museum is the ticket to great
insight to the land and the people of the Bruce. A new exhibit opening this summer looks at
global warming. Another, for kids, presents the wonder of patterns in nature. Featured on

Bruce Coast Lighthouse Tour

Stretching from Point Clark in the south to Tobermory in the north, the Bruce Coast
Lighthouse Tour features 15 distinctive lighthouse and marine heritage sites for you
to explore along the shores of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. You can climb to the
top of the light tower, take a tour boat ride, spot the Phantom Piper, experience
world famous sunsets, paint or photograph, learn the history of marine navigation,
and see shipwrecks.

Suggested route: Begin your tour at the Point Clark Lighthouse and meander to
Tobermory along the Lake Huron shoreline (2-3 days). After touring the Tobermory
sites head back down the Peninsula along the Georgian Bay side and end your tour
with the Cape Croker Lighthouse (2-3 days).

Happy Birthday! Here’s what you do (please read carefully):

This year marks the start of some very special birthday celebrations here on the
Bruce. John Brown’s famous Imperial Towers begin turning 150 years old starting
in 2008. The Cove Island Light Station followed by Point Clark, then Chantry
Island all reach this significant milestone in the next few years and you bet there
will be a party.

Canada Post Uses Point Clark in New Stamp Series
The Point Clark Lighthouse has been featured as one of six stamps in a set of
lighthouses that reflect Canada’s rich marine history. Purchase the set at any
Canada Post outlet.
• The tour is self-guided, however some sites do provide interpretation
and guide service seasonally.
• The distance from Point Clark to Tobermory is approximately 210 km.
• Watch the weather. Sites which are only accessible by boat are highly
dependent on good weather.
• Admission fees vary for each location. National Park fees apply for
Flowerpot Island. For island locations tour boat fees apply.
• Wear appropriate footwear. Some offer hiking trails.
