How to Build a CCNA Voice 640-461 Lab

We are actually going to cover two different approaches for building your CCNA Voice
640-461 lab today !he challenge in building a CCNA Voice lab is it gets very
e"pensive# very $uic%ly !his is pri&arily due to the re$uire&ent for lots of
speciali'ed Voice &odules and accessories that are only applicable to a Voice lab (ut
first of all# let)s set the stage with what is the heart and soul of a CCNA Voice lab
What is Call Manager & CME?
Cisco Call Manager(CUCM) and Call Manager Express(CME) * !hey both are
call processing devices C+, will give call processing facility for locally attached -. /
analog phones Call +anager supports centrali'ed whereas as C+, supports
distributed voice networ% architecture Call +anager handles hundreds of -. phones
centrally and it is a dedicated server/device
C+, provides the router based call &anage&ent features are router access based
C+, is a router with Call +anager ,"press software installed on it# including so&e
telephone devices !he C+, router will act as a gateway between .0!N and local -.
voice networ% 1ab setup phones 2-. / analog3 both will be connected to the Call
+anager ,"press router using 450 ports via the local 1AN switch
-n &ost ho&e lab setup scenarios# C+, would be a better choice in ter&s of cost and
fle"ibility 0o the two &ost co&&on options are as follows6
-f we are tight on cash we will use a 5+ 0eries router with at least 178+( of 9:A+
and 4;+( of 4lash to support the -<0 and C+, functionality !he downside to this is
we can only support C+, 41
!he better approach is to go with a 8;11 router with =18&b 9:A+ and 18;&b flash
so you can run -<0 1= with C+, ;6
Now we can use C+, as the 0-. trun% gateway between ho&e -. lab networ% and
service provider We will be learning about 0-. server in &ore detail below
Now there are actually a few different approaches you can ta%e for building your
CCNA Voice lab 0o let &e start off with the easy one first C>C+ !his runs on a
dedicated Cisco server platfor& !hese are generally way too e"pensive to have in a
ho&e Voice lab !hus the approach ta%en by &ost is to virtuali'e this server to learn
your C>C+ concepts !his can be done using V+Ware wor%station or server We will
not go into detail on this as this is covered in the Cisco CCNA Voice lab &anual
Now let)s discuss our C+, approach as this is what you need to purchase your
hardware for !he CCNA Voice e"a& covers C+, ;6 !o run C+, ;6 you will need a
Cisco 8;11 =18/18; router with basically &a"ed our &e&ory and so&e Voice .V9+#
&odules# etc !his approach is covered in our 0tandard CCNA Voice 640-461 1ab ?it
-- !he challenge with this %it is it &ay be a little pricey for so&e students 0o in that
case# we have a less e"pensive option to run C+, 41 on a 86005+ router Are all
the co&&ands and functionality e"actly the sa&e as ;6@ No# but it is a good low
cost solution to be able to e"ercise the Voice topics to prepare to pass the e"a&
What Routers, Switches and Modules do I need or !"
CC#$ %oice &a'?
CME ()* $pproach
!o follow the Cisco .ress 1ab +anual# you will need two 8;11 A;4/18; routers each
with a VW-C8-1+4!-!1/,1 and a .V9+8-A8 We can then supple&ent that with so&e
V-C8-8450 and V-C8-845< &odules for analog and .(5 scenarios Additionally you
will want a pair of .o,2.ower over ,thernet3 A==0 or better switches and two -.
.hones along with an analog phone -f you want to also do the current version >nity
Voice&ail labs# you will want to add in the ai&8-cue &odule or if you don)t &ind
support for only version B versus version ; you can save so&e &oney with the
standard ai&-cue &odule Again# this approach is covered here0tandard CCNA Voice
640-461 1ab ?it --
Now if you want to save so&e &oney on this lab# you can cut the lab in half (ut you
have to understand you will not be able to do any of the e"ercises for the branch
office Cou will only be able to do the Dead$uarters office labs (ut it will still provide
tons of value and you can add to the lab at a later date
CME +), $pproach
We understand that the newer routers once you add in all the functionality &ay be a
bit e"pensive for so&e 0o we created our ownCCNA Voice 1ab Wor%boo% and
topology for a ho&e lab We wanted to &a%e it co&plicated enough to really show
you how the traffic flows As &entioned before# this uses C+, 41 which is not e"act
for the current e"a&# but it is a good alternative low cost solution 0o what is
re$uired to follow our lab scenarios@ (elow we have co&piled a list of e$uip&ent
used in a our CCNA Voice lab topology 0o we will ta%e a &o&ent to describe each
piece of the lab and we will loo% into what each co&ponent does and why it is
re$uired ?eep in &ind you can replace any of these ite&s with co&ponents that
support the sa&e functionality
<ne 86105+ :outer 8=6+( 9:A+ E 4;+( 4lash with 184 -<0

going to create using the above &entioned co&ponents to setup a voice

0*,12M Router * !his 8600 series router gives &ultiservice voice and data
integration# support for e&bedded call processing with cisco C+, 41 which we will
be using in our ho&e lab -t will give us support for V-C cards !his will act as C+,
router in lab setup !he single ,thernet &odels 286=0"&# 8680"&# and 8610"&3 are
co&paratively cheaper in cost then the two ,thernet &odels 286=1"&# 8681"&#
8611"&3 and we donFt need two ,thernet ports for a C+, router Dowever we will
need 178+( 9:A+ E 4;+( flash with to support C+, 41 and 184 -<0 for our Voice
concepts
0(,, Router - !his is the preferred router to run C+, ;6 and -<0 1=1 Gust

%IC30-26 &odule * this is a two port voice/fa" interface card and gets integrated in
86105+ router which we will be using in our CCNA ho&e lab V-C-845< card will be
used to interface the whole thing with the .<!0 line co&ing in to your ho&e and you
would be able to connect e"isting ho&e telephone line into this &odule to &a%e and

%IC030-26- +a%e sure you note the e"tra 8 in the &odel nu&ber !his is very

Cisco I4 4hones - B760N is nice with 6 buttons# but a two line B740N will also
serve the purpose (asically we need two phones at a &ini&u&# one should have as
&any buttons as you can afford# the other can be a two line or even a lowly one line
B718N if price is a concern We need to buy power bric%s too if switch isn)t .o, !he

so if you want this then you will need one >nity is an alternate Voice&ail 0yste&
$IM03CUE * !he A-+8-C>, will give you additional functionality again covered in
the new C+, ;6 lab wor%boo% for the 8;11 series routers

Passing the CCNA Voice certification exam is difficult enough if you are fully prepared
by attending a Cisco CCNA Voice class with an instructor and you have access to all the
proper books and equipment. ut what happens when you go home as it is not
reasonable for you to retain all that information you would have been exposed to in a one
week boot camp! "ou will need to setup a CCNA Voice lab in your home or work to
really absorb all those concepts and cement them into your brain through actual hands#on
application. $his is where our CCNA Voice %ab &orkbook can help you'
(ur CCNA Voice %ab &orkbook was designed to be generic so you don)t need to have the exact models in
our topology*but it will help+. "ou may ask, what is the suggested equipment to compliment this lab
workbook! -eep in mind this is a suggestion and you can complete many of the labs with more or less
equipment.
$o complete all the labs in this lab workbook you will need the following devices or better.
(ne /01234 5outer 16/4 75A4 8 9:4 ;lash with 1/.9 <(= as your C4> 9.1 router *keep in mind
the newer exam features C4> :.0, but many cannot afford the more expensive equipment and this
provides a cost effective solution as the concepts are basically the same+.

&hat if you don)t have those exact units! &ell, most of the labs will still work as long as you have a C4>
router. <f you do not have the nm#cue module*which is about CB22+, you can still do all the labs except
labs /6 8 B2. $hus you should be able to put the rest of the topology together for about C1,222. &e
obviously have these kits preconfigured for you. &hat if you have to skimp and don)t have all the switches
or routers! &ill you still be able to do them all! $o a large extent. "ou are a CCNA by now. =o given
that logic you should be able to remove a router or switch from the lab topology and still see how the lab
works and understand the concepts behind it. =o there is still value in going through the labs even if you
don)t have every peice as you will understand the how and why behind the lab concept with our in#depth
explanations.
=o let)s take a look at the labs covered in this CCNA Voice %ab &orkbook.
