SUMMARY MAKING
Did you sleep well last night? Getting a good nights sleep requires more than
crawling into bed and closing our eyes. Understanding your sleep behaviour and
preparing for a good sound sleep can help make sure every night is a good night for
sleeping.
sleep is a behaviour and like all behaviour, it varies greatly among people
explains Dr Carlo Ladis, sleep researcher, has found that people sleep better at
different times during their daily cycle. For example, some people function better if
they go to sleep early and rise early, while others feel more rested if they stay up
late and sleep in. Many people dont pay attention to the timing of their sleep.
Ladis notes. The amount of sleep the average an adult needs each night also varies.
Gradually altering the timing of sleep can help change sleep patterns. In addition to
maintaining a regular daily sleep schedule, Ladis offers the following tips on
practicing good sleep hygiene.
Finish exercising at least two hours before going to sleep. Dont sleep in a
warm environment. A drop in a persons body temperature is important at the onset
of deep sleep. People who sleep in a well-heated room or use an electric blanket
may not sleep as soundly. Eventually, you can catch up on missed sleep when you
have the opportunity.

In four sentences of your own, summarize the tips for good sleep.

Reading Comprehension
Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
At 2 pm 5th December 1945, five US bombers took off from fort Lauderdale in
USA for a training fight over the west of the Atlantic ocean near the islands of
Bermuda in perfect weather. Shortly after words, the pilots sent a radio message
that there was a serious problem in their flight engines.
12

Two hours after take off; all contact with the planes was lost. A military plane
was sent immediately to search for the missing planes. Within 20 minutes, radio
contact with it had also been lost. No trace of any of the planes was ever found. In
all, six planes and 27 men had vanished into the air.
The disappearance of the six planes was far from being the first mysterious
indicated in the area, for years, navigational problems and strange magnetic forces
had been reported. The disappearance was not even the greatest disaster within
the area of Bermuda islands. In March 1918 a huge ship, the Cyclops, from USA
was sailing from Barbados to Norfolk; Virginia. Suddenly, it vanished, with its crew
of 309, from the surface of the ocean without making a disaster call and without
the slightest wreckage ever being found.
The losses of boats and planes in that area defy explanation. The disasters
are the origin of a new phrase in the English language, which is Bermuda Triangle,
and this phrase has become a legend. The Bermuda Triangle has been called the
devils Triangle. The Triangle of Death, the Graveyard of the Atlantic. It has
swallowed up 140 ships and planes and more than 1000 people. Today many
airmen and sailors are still afraid of that area of the Atlantic Ocean.
A) Choose the correct answer from a, b ,c, and d:
1- On 5th December 1945 the five US bombers .
a- arrived in Europe
b- disappeared
b- landed safely
d- couldnt take off
2-Bermuda Triangle is located in ..

c- the pacific ocean

One of the reasons why so many children start smoking is that they see adults
smoking. They think that it is a grown-up thing to do. They smoke in order to
impress their friends, and also because they dont really believe that cigarettes will
do them any harm. Quite reasonably, they are not impressed when adults warn
them about the dangers of smoking. If smoking is so dangerous, why do so many
adults do it? Action on Smoking and Health ( ) exists in order to
make the public more aware of the dangers of smoking. It tries to make people
give up smoking and limiting cigarette advertising.

Summary Making
Shakespeare is one of the worlds greatest play-wrights and one of the most
remarkable story tellers that the world has ever known. Shakespeare wrote
comedies, tragedies, historical and romantic plays, melodramas, adventure stories,
and fairy tales. Each of his plays has become immortal.
In early times, stories were told in verse, because they were recited instead
of being written down. Shakespeare wrote his plays for the stage, so he used verse.
He was a practical man and worked the as an actor, writer and producer of plays.
His audience enjoyed his plays so much in the theatre, that they returned to watch
them again and again.
His plays have been published in almost every country of the world. He wrote
some outstanding plays like, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and many
more.
In four sentences of your own, summarize why Shakespeare is a
famous person.

READING COMPREHENSION
Read the following, then answer the questions:
Some disabled people have a special card they use when they park their car.
These are called disabled placards. They are removable signs that can be hung from
the rearview mirror of a car. These placards are only supposed to be for disabled
people.
These placards are meant to help disabled people in a number of ways. They
allow the person to park in special parking spaces. They can also be used when
dropping-off or picking-up a disabled person. A disabled person can even use it to
park without having to put money into meters.
Parking officials think that some people are cheating. Not all people who have
these placards are disabled. Today, one in sixteen drivers in California carries the
sign.
There are a lot more people who have disabled placards today than ten years
ago. A person from the DMV says that there are many reasons for the increase in
numbers. As people get older they may have a reason to receive one. There are
also more reasons that allow drivers to have one today. Finally, there are a number
of people who have them that should not.
Last year the DMV cancelled more than 25,000 permits. They found that lots of
people who had the disabled placards had died. These permits are no longer valid.
Some people are worried about the system being abused. They are worried
that access to the program could be limited because of misuse by others. More
rules could make it harder for truly disabled people to get disabled placards
