1. Pakistan announced the successful training launch of the Medium Range Ballistic Missile, Hatf V (Ghauri) which can
carry both conventional and nuclear warheads to a distance of 1,300 km.

Election Commission has directed it to stop any such proposal because Model Code of Conduct is in force in Gujarat.
5. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will complain to the Election Commission against the United Progressive Alliance

6. Lok Sabha approved a Bill to expand the definition of offences related to money laundering. Mr. Chidambaram said
the amendments sought to enlarge the definition of predicate offences of money laundering and include activities that

20. About 45,000 Indians staying illegally in the United Arab Emirates have been permitted to leave the country by the
UAE Government under the amnesty scheme without payment of any penalty. The amnesty period has been declared
from December 4 to February 3.
21. GDP (gross domestic product) growth dipped to 5.3 per cent in the second quarter (July-September) of 2012-13 from
6.7 per cent in the same quarter during the previous fiscal. It also slipped from 5.5 per cent in the first quarter of the
current fiscal. Now GDP growth at 5.4 per cent during the first half (April-September) of 2012-13
22. Manipur Cabinet decided to recommend extension of the Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) for one more year. Under this
provision, the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) 1958, which gives untrammeled powers to the security forces,
will also be extended.
23. The World Bank has sanctioned an additional credit of $ 70 million to the State for the ongoing Karnataka Health
System Development and Reform Project (KHSDRP). The project will be financed by the International Development
Association (IDA).
24. The U.N. General Assembly approved a resolution calling on Israel to quickly open its nuclear programme for
inspection.
25. The U.S. fined a Chinese state-owned Huaxing Construction company $3 million after it agreed to plead guilty to
criminal charges for exporting U.S.-made coatings to a Pakistan nuclear plant against U.S. restrictions.
26. Japan and India signed a Bilateral Swap Agreement (BSA) which enables both countries to swap their local
currencies, that is, either Japanese yen or Indian rupee against the U.S. dollar for an amount up to $15 billion. The BSA
would be effective for a three-year period.
27. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set up a supervisory college for State Bank of India (SBI) and ICICI Bank. The
concept was enunciated in the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision (BCBS) document.
28. UPA succeeded in defeating the Opposition motion against FDI in the multi-trade retail sector. The motion was
rejected with 253 members voting against and 218 members in favour. 22 members of the BSP and 21 members of the
SP staged a walkout before the motion was put to vote.
29. The Supreme Court will soon get three more judges M.Y. Eqbal (Madras), Vikramajit Sen (Karnataka) and V.
Gopalagowda (Orissa). With the elevation of three judges, the strength of the Supreme Court will go up to 28 as against
the sanctioned number of 31.
30. India has been ranked 94th out of 176 countries in Transparency Internationals 2012 Corruption Perception Index
(CPI). Last year, India was ranked 95 out of 183 countries that were studied.

31. India has told the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) prime ministerial meeting that it stood ready to join

market for CIS member States.

45. RBI issued new guidelines for Core Investment Companies (CIC). All CICs investing in joint ventures or subsidiaries
or representative offices overseas in the financial sector will require prior approval from the bank, the RBI said in a
release.

Sabha. SP walked out, reducing the effective strength of the House by nine members. The BSPs 15 MPs voted against

into shares of a defaulting firm by the Asset Reconstruction Company (ARC). Debt Recovery Tribunal law dealt with only
those who had borrowed in excess of Rs. 10 lakh.
68. The Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee honoured the European Union with Peace Prize for 2012 in Oslo. The prize
money of 930,000 will be given to projects that help children struggling in war zones. The EU has said it will add 1.07
million along with it to donate a total of 2 million to the selected aid projects.

85. The final version of The Right to Fair Compensation, Resettlement, Rehabilitation and Transparency in Land
Acquisition Bill was approved by the Cabinet. The bill now requires the consent of only 70 per cent of land owners when
the government acquires land for a public-private partnership (PPP) project. A slightly higher bar 80 per cent consent
has been put in place for all other types of projects.

113. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed developers/builders to raise funds through external commercial
borrowings (ECBs) for low-cost affordable housing projects with immediate effect.
114. Lok Sabha approved Constitution amendment Bill that will grant special status to six backward districts in the
Hyderabad Karnataka region. The Constitution (118th Amendment) Bill, 2012 seeks to insert a new Article 371-J to
provide special recognition for the six backward districts in north Karnataka: Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur, Bidar, Koppal and
Bellary.
115. Leaders representing Afghanistans government and opposition will meet with representatives of the Taliban at
Paris in France.
116. The Lok Sabha passed the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2011, to pave the way for foreign investments in the
sector and establishment of new private banks. The Minister also expressed the commitment of the government to
infuse Rs.15,000 crore into public sector banks in the current financial year.
117. The Banking Bill also seeks to raise the voting rights of investors in private sector banks to 26 per cent, from 10 per
cent. It also allows the RBI to supersede boards of private sector banks and increase the cap on voting rights of private
investors in PSBs to 10 per cent, from one per cent.
