JEKYLL 27.5 / JEKYLL CARBON TEAM
http://www.cannondale.com/nam_en/2015/bikes/mountain/overmountain/jekyll/jekyll-carbon-team

The object of analysis is a racing bicycle (which is used for mountain bike racing in
very muddy and wet terrain. The racing team is not only trying to improve the speed
and reliability of the bike, a maintenance program is part of this. For a few parts (e.g.
body and steering mechanism a FMEA analysis has been made), and some
maintenance instructions exist (See appendix 1 and 2).

a) Perform a Reliability Centered Maintenance analysis to establish a maintenance
and inspection program. The RCM/FMEA procedure proposed in the booklet for RCM
(NASA RCM guide) should be followed and all steps must be described and
motivated. The description and motivation of the followed steps should be described
in a separate report. The maintenance and inspection should be usable by the
mechanics of the racing team.

b) Use the additional MFA analysis to find opportunities for further improvement (Use
Chapter 4, PhD thesis J an Braaksma for more details on the MFA method)

Note: You are free to alter the RCM/FMEA sheet proposed by NASA. However, if
you change the NASA sheet, describe what and why you changed the sheet.

Note2: The RCM/FMEA does not describe how the maintenance activities
resulting from the FMEA should be presented in a standardized way. You can
include them in a separate table. But you can also try to include this in the
RCM/FMEA table.

2. Reflect on your approach and outcomes of the RCM analysis you carried out.
- Describe how you did execute the RCM/FMEA process (use of theory), which
decisions did you made during the RCM/FMEA process and where are they
based on?
- Did you choose for a rigorous or intuitive RCM/FMEA process, give arguments
for your decision.
- What (additional) information sources did you use and to what extent could
you use them?
- To what extent are you able to interpret and re-use the existing RCM/ FMEA
and resulting maintenance schedule?
- Make clear where you did improve the analysis and how you improved it.
- To what extent can you prove that the previous analysis can be improved and
to what extent do you have evidence for your suggested improvements?
(FMEA and maintenance schedule)
Tip: If you need more information or details which are not provided, make
assumptions and communicate them in the report.
Tip 2: You have limited time to do the FMEA, decide wisely where you want to invest
your time on.

Reporting
Use academic literature and refer to the relevant literature in a meaningful and
correct way. In addition to the content, I will also focus on the writing style. To assist
you in this respect, the university has a writing center with a website containing a lot
of helpful links: http://www.utwente.nl/so/writingcentre/.
