Introductory Spinal Manipulation

A Survey of Basic Thrust Manipulative Techniques for the Cervical, Thoracic, & Lumbar Spine

________________________________________________________________________________________________
Course Description
This one day seminar combines an evidence-based, didactic lecture instruction, with intensive hands-on lab training in cervical, thoracic and lumbosacral
high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) spinal thrust manipulation (STM), and how to apply those techniques in a safe and competent manner. These
introductory techniques serve to facilitate neurophysiological and mechanical effects for patients experiencing musculoskeletal dysfunction of the spine. The
student will learn useful techniques to implement immediately on patients the next day. The seminar covers a significant amount of peer-reviewed
literature reviews, video demonstration, and peer feedback allowing basic technique mastery. Emphasis will be placed on patient and clinician safety. This
course will also give therapists references to engage in meaningful conversation with fellow clinicians, physicians, clients, and prospective patients regarding
the efficacy and safety of these techniques.

Learning Objectives
Articulate current evidence regarding high-velocity low-amplitude thrust manipulation in neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.
Encourage sound clinical reasoning as it relates to the use (or non-use) of high-velocity low-amplitude techniques.
Describe indications, precautions, and contraindications (relative & absolute) of thrust manipulation.
Enhance the students psychomotor and placatory skills in the deliverance of thrust manipulation.
Debunk myths associated with thrust manipulation and develop an appreciation for their application in everyday clinical practice.
Develop and integrate body posture, positioning, and set-up in the application of thrust manipulation.
Understand and integrate evidence behind specific therapeutic exercise and neuromuscular re-education as it relates to thrust manipulation.
Formal assessment of acquired skills provided through Q&A sessions and instructor and peer feedback of clinical skills.
