TODAYS READINGS
First Reading -- Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you
(Isaiah 60:1-6).
Psalm -- Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72).
Second Reading -- The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in
Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6).
Gospel -- Magi from the east arrived, saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews?" (Matthew 2:1-12).

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY

Sunday, January 12: Is 42:1-4, 6-7; Ps 29:1-4, 3, 9-10; Acts 10:34-38; Mt 3:13-17

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday, January 5: The Epiphany of the Lord; National Migration Week
Monday, January 6th: St. Andr Bessette
Tuesday, January 7th: St. Raymond of Penyafort; Julian Calendar Christmas

Almost every year at Christmastime, you can find a newspaper article or TV documentary about the star of Bethle-
hem. Astronomers give various theories about whether the magi saw a new star, perhaps a supernova, or a comet, or
a conjunction of two or more planets. Since the magi are generally believed to be astrologers, the conjunction seems
most likely. More important is the meaning of the star. In Matthew's Gospel, light is used as a symbol of the good
news of Jesus coming into the world. Jesus is the light of the world, so the magi follow that light to get to Jesus. That's
why verse 9 of the Gospel has the image of the star preceding the wise men and stopping over the house where Jesus
was. By following the star, they become followers of Christ. So what do the magi show us about following Jesus? First,
they take the initiative. They saw the star, figured out what it meant, and made their journey. As followers of Jesus,
we can look for what needs to be done (in our family, parish, or community) and do it. We don't have to wait for the
pastor to call us and beg for help--there are probably articles in this bulletin asking for help. Second, they expressed
their faith in Jesus by the gifts they brought: gold--a gift for a king, who is worthy to be followed; frankincense--Jesus
is worthy to be worshiped as Son of God; and myrrh--Jesus becomes king by dying for us all. We can express our faith
in many ways. We can volunteer to help the poor, the elderly, or the disabled. We can teach our children how to pray
and tell them about all that God has done for us. Third, they were not afraid to take risks for Jesus. When they went
back home without telling Herod where they found the child, Herod was furious (Matthew 2:16). For all they knew, he
could have come after them. How often do we take risks for the Lord, by openly speaking about our faith or giving
God credit for the good that we do? Let the star of Bethlehem remind us that Jesus is the star of our lives.

If what you did yesterday still looks big to you, surely you have not done much today.

A NEW LENTEN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE WOMEN OF CORPUS CHRISTI

Are you interested in getting together with a group of women to explore your faith and grow in fellowship? You
dont have much scripture knowledge, but you would like to see how the scriptures apply to your everyday life? If
so, we invite you to join Walking with Purpose. We'll meet for six weeks on Thursday evenings from 6:15 to 8:00,
starting March 6, 2014.

Walking with Purpose (WWP) is a weekly reflection that aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with
Christ and develop friendships and support for one another. Through personal study and small group discussions,
the group helps to link our everyday challenges and struggles to the solutions given to us through the teachings of
Christ and the Church.

Interested in learning more? Please join us for a WWP introduction meeting on Sunday, Jan. 12
th
, 2014, in the
Lower Hall from 1:30-3pm Bring a friend too!

Fish Seminars resume this week!
The FISH team hopes you had a wonderful and joyous Christmas and New Years break!
FISH Seminars will begin again this Wednesday, January 8th at 4:30pm

Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:11
The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try
to follow. Each of us is called to open our gifts before Jesus, offering Him what He needs. If you have trouble with this idea, keep
one of the Magi from your Nativity set on your desk all year as a reminder to bring your gifts to Jesus.

Father Tim News
Father Tims first weekend back will be January 11-12, 2014.
His doctor has not given him an exact return date to his adminis-
trative duties, but he will be with us at all liturgies during the
2nd weekend of January. Father Tim was able to attend a large
family gathering to celebrate Christmas, which he has not been
able to do in years. He was very grateful to spend time with his
entire family. Father wants to thank everyone for their prayers
and well wishes.

Saturday, January 11, 2014 is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day
What does Catholic Social Teaching say?
The joys and hopes, the grief's and the anxieties of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way af-
flicted, these too are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ.
(Gaudium et spes #1)

Criminal groups engage in human trafficking because it is highly profitable and less risky, than dealing in drugs or
weapons. People can be sold repeatedly without a large capital investment.

The United States is one of the destination countries. Victims of trafficking originate from such nations as Russia,
the Ukraine, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, the Czech Republic, Mexico and India.
Victims are brought here to work in fields, sweatshops, homes, restaurants and brothels.

If you think or suspect that someone is a victim of human trafficking, call the
Trafficking Information/ Referral Hotline: 1-888-3737-888.
