TRANSDUCERS & MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES (INSTR F312)
FIRST SEMESTER 2013-14

M.Marks : 40 M Mid Term Test (Oct 1, 2013) OPEN BOOK Time : 40 Min.
Q1. A Wheatstone bridge with only one active strain gauge is used for load measurement. The
nominal resistance of the active gauge and other fixed resistors are 120 . The gauge factor is 2.1
and the supply voltage of the bridge is 10 V. Calculate the strain when the output from the bridge is
20 mV. (Do not use any approximation.)
[6]
Q2. A parallel-plate capacitor has a movable central plate between two fixed plates. When movable
plate is at 1 mm equidistance from the fixed plates, the capacitances are 20 nF each. Pulse train
obtained from PWM circuit for linearizing output of capacitive transducer varies between 10V
with time period of 200 sec and duty cycle of 25% is fed to low pass RC (Time constant=1 sec)
filter. (i) Find the output at 50 sec, 200 sec. (ii) What would be the steady state values of C
1
and
C
2
, the capacitances formed between fixed plates and movable central plate.

Q3. Consider a mass-spring system with negligible damping in which the LVDT core is connected
to a spring. The spring constant is 240 N/m and the LVDT core mass is 0.05 kg, maximum core
displacement is 2 cm. The LVDT output is 0.31 mV/mm. If the mass-spring system is subjected to
an acceleration 'a', then (a) Find the relation between acceleration a in m/s
2
and output voltage 'V
o
'
in V (ii) Maximum acceleration that can be measured (c) Natural frequency of the system.
[4+4+4=12]
Q4. A rectangular copper slab having dimensions 250 m 200 m l50 m (length width
depth) is subjected to a magnetic field B = 0.65 T applied perpendicular to the width depth plane,
and a current of 23 A applied across the length depth plane . Determine the consequent Hall
potential difference V
H
and indicate the plane to which it would be prependicular. Given: density of
copper is 8940 kg/m
3
; atomic weight of copper is 63.5, Avogadro's number 6.0225 10
23
,
electronic charge is 1.6 10
-19
. Assume one charge carrier per atom.
