JPG
Advantages:
- Widely supported standard for both digital photography and internet .
- Variable compressing allows you to change the files size

Disadvantages:
- Jpeg is not suitable for simpler pictures that contain few colours, broad areas of
similar colour, or stark differences in brightness.
- There is some loss of quality when a file is compressed.

TIFF tagged image file format

TIFF is a raster file, meaning it uses pixel data.
Advantages:
- Widely supported standard, often used when scanning.
- Both mac and windows computers support it.

Disadvantages:
- TIFF is not supported by web browsers
- does not compress automatically so creates a larger file.

PNG portable network graphics

PNG is a raster file, meaning it uses pixel data
Advantages:
- PNG is a platform independent format, PNG supports high level lossless
compression and transparency.
- PNG is supported by more recent web browsers

Disadvantages:
- Older bowsers and programs may not support PNG
- As an internet file format, PNG offers no support for multi-image files or
animated files

BMP windows bitmap

BMP is a raster file, meaning it uses pixel data
Advantages:
- supports a wide range of colours.
- The BMP format is widely compatible with existing windows programs,
especially older programs

Disadvantages:
- BMP does not support compression which results in very large files
- BMP files are not supported by web browsers
- Only used by windows computers

GIF graphics interchange format

GIF is a raster file, meaning it uses pixel data
Advantages:
- GIF is a widely supported internet standard
- Lossless compression and transparency are supported
- Animated GIFS are common and easy to create with many animation programs

Disadvantages:
- GIF supports only a 256 colour palette therefor detailed pictures and photo
realistic images lose colour information
- Lossless compression and transparency are limited to other formats

PSD Photoshop document

PSD is a raster file, meaning it uses pixel data
Advantages:
- allows images to be stored in layers
- PSD files can be imported into other software programs such as after effects for
special film effects and titles.
- you can also create and manipulate vector graphics

Disadvantages:
- PSD is a very large file so will need to be saved as a smaller file if you want to
share it
- PSD does not work with all programs
- the vector graphics function is limited and more specialized maybe more useful.

CGM computer graphics metafile

CGM is a metafile, raster and vector
Advantages:
- works with many systems
- it is international standard

Disadvantages:
- in some programs CGM needs a filter to convert it.

PDF portable document

PDF is a metafile, raster and vector
Advantages:
- Can be opened on any system .
- It is a small file so it is easy to share via internet or email.

Disadvantages:
Cannot manipulate images once they are saved to this format

Raster File Raster graphics use pixels to share the data. However if you
zoom into a raster file it will go pixelated.

Vector File Vector graphics use mathematical equations (points, lines,
curves, shapes or polygons) to store the data. However if you zoom into a
vector file it will not go pixelated.
