Introduction

HDPE stands for High-Density Polyethylene. It is sometimes also referred to as polyethylene high-density (PEHD) and sees high import volume
into India given its various applications. It takes 1.75 kilograms of petroleum (in terms of energy and raw materials) to make one kilogram of HDPE.
Known for its large strength to density ratio, HDPE finds applications in Raffia, Blow Moulding, Film, Pipes and Injection Moulding. HDPE is highly
preferred as a sheathing material where it provides high resistance to water penetration. It is very hard, has low coefficient of friction, and is abrasion
resistant. Hence, it is used in products and packaging such as milk jugs, detergent bottles, margarine tubs, garbage containers and water pipes.

HDPE is principally used for the manufacture of high-performance pipe, blow-molded household and industrial bottles, oil bottles, injection-molded food
containers, consumer durables and disposable goods and film goods such as grocery sacks and merchandise bags.

The above table gives a snapshot on HDPE India imports in terms of volume imported and monetary value of the imports that have taken place in 2013.
The volume for the month of June was recorded at 33839 MTS which is a 5.92% increase over the import volume of May. The monetary value of the
imports was Rs. 285 crores which is a 7.14% increase over the monetary value of HDPE imported in the preceding month.

The above table gives out the average figures for HDPE imported into India in 2013. As we can see, the average import per month stands at 31477 MTS,
the average import monetary value per month is Rs. 260 crores. HDPE imports in 2013 have seen an average volume decline of 1.03% and an average
monetary value increase of 0.28% per month so far into the year.

The above table lists out the M-o-M changes for the respective HDPE grades considering average monthly prices. The month of June saw its biggest jump
in prices considering monthly averages in 2013. All the five grades witnessed an increase of between 5% and 6%. The increase in Raffia was the highest
at 5.71% while the Injection was the lowest at 5.25%. HDPE grades have seen a healthy overall price increases so far this year.

Important Global News

1) JG summit is likely to restart operations at its high density polyethylene/linear low density polyethylene (HDPE/LLDPE) swing plant in end July
2013. A Polymerupdate source in the Philippines informed that the plant was shut in mid-January 2013 for capacity expansion. Located at
Batangas in Philippines, the HDPE/LLDPE swing plant has a production capacity of 200,000 mt/year. Post expansion, the capacity of the plant will
expand to 320,000 mt/year.

2) Daelim Industrial has restarted its high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant. A Polymerupdate source in South Korea informed that the plant
restarted on June 13, 2013. It was shut for a maintenance turnaround on March 13, 2013. Though the plant was scheduled to restart in a month's
time, the restart was extended following an explosion at a chemical storage tank. Located in Yeosu, South Korea, the plant has a production
capacity of 270,000 mt/year.
