OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
AWARENESS MONTH
Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behaviors that
can include physical, psychological, sexual, economic,
and emotional abuse, perpetrated by one person against
an intimate partner to establish and maintain power and
control. The Altar Society, in recognition of October as
Domestic Violence Awareness month, is requesting cash
donations for purchasing bus tickets and hygiene items
for clients of Bradley Angle House. Since 2009 we have
provided 286 hygiene kits, and are the sole source of this
type of donation to the shelter. Envelopes marked
Domestic Violence Donation are available on the back
counter of the church. Donations may be dropped in the
collection, mailed to the office, or in person at the office.
Thank you for your help in supporting this ministry of the
Altar Society.

HECKER QUOTE
Every soul true to itself & to God has something unusual. This is not to be
condemned. The natural must be guided by Divine grace, not suppressed
or despised. But Divine grace must be the Master & only guide of the
soul. [Thoughts on the Spiritual Life, 1865]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is
ill, and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr.
Paul Robichaud, CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time ! Sunday October 5, 2014

The peace of God will be with you. . .
Pastoral Corner

In the Philippians Reading today, Paul gives what to some may seem strange advice. He is urging the people not
to worry about things. Strange advice indeed! We all know that it is natural to worry about many things. It is part
of being human, and especially so as part of the burden we should bear if we care about anyone or anything
beyond ourselves.

But Paul is not talking about normal concerns. He is talking about anxiety. Nothing is more debilitating or fruitless
than anxiety. Of itself it does nothing to solve our problems. Rather, the opposite is the case. By dissipating our
energy, anxiety weakens us and makes it more difficult for us to find a solution to our problems.

The root of anxiety is lack of trust - lack of trust in oneself, in others, and especially in God. That is why Paul urges
us to pray about things. We must learn to commit our cares to the Lord: 'If there is anything you need, pray for it.'

He is not suggesting that prayer should take the place of action. Nor is he implying that our prayers will always be
answered. However, prayer implies a willingness to do what we can, and then to leave the rest in the hands of
God. To accept what happens then as Gods present willing for us, even though we may not understand it.

Next Paul tells his readers to think positively. People who are over anxious usually think negative thoug hts. In
anxious moments, how often we imagine and project worst case scenarios. Paul is telling us to concentrate on the
good rather than the negative.

But most importantly, Paul tells us to act on the good. Thoughts are good but action is better.

If we do what we can, and put our trust in God, then Paul assures us that 'the peace of God, which is so much greater
than we can understand, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.'

Peace comes, not from having an easy and tranquil life. We can have peace even in the midst of struggle and turmoil
provided we are on the side of right. Then the God of peace will be with us.

Fr. Charlie
