I am not sure if I did this right or not. I used a driving question but focused it
through a pop culture phenomenon. I did this because I felt that this would really
interest students and keep them engaged. I do not think that this would be too
hard to adapt once the new craze faded away (you would just need to substitute
and change the focus). This may also give teachers and students an opportunity to
link education across disciplines (English class may be able to coincide with this
unit).

Driving Question Outline

• What natural settings do we see in the Twilight series and movie?

○ What biomes do we find in the Twilight series? What other biomes do
we find on Earth?
○ Using the setting of Forks, Washington: What organisms do we find in
the Pacific Northwest of the United States?
○ What roles do these organisms of the Pacific Northwest play in their
environment?
○ How does the non-living environment affect the living organisms of the
Pacific Northwest?
○ How do these organisms interact with each other?
○ Where does the energy and nutrients come from to fuel the growth of
the forests of the Pacific Northwest?
○ What happens to the relationships among organisms when one is
removed?
○ How has the ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest changed over time?
○ How have humans affected the ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest?

Driving Question Outline with Answers

• What natural settings do we see in the Twilight series and movie?

○ What biomes do we find in the Twilight series? What other biomes do
we find on Earth?
 In the Twilight series we can find the temperate rainforests of
Forks and La Push, Washington; we can find the intertidal zone
and kelp forests of the Northwest Pacific Ocean off the coast of
Washington; the arctic tundra of Alaska; the chaparral in Italy;
and the desert in Phoenix, Arizona.
• Biome, habitat and biosphere
 Other biomes of the world include:
• Terrestrial biomes (polar desert, taiga, grassland, tropical
evergreen forest, etc)

• Freshwater biomes (lakes, rivers, etc.)

• Marine biomes (coral reefs, mangrove forests, etc.)

 Some organisms play specific roles in their environment.
• Producers, consumers, herbivores, omnivores, carnivores,
decomposers, ecosystem engineer, foundation species,
and keystone species
○ How does the non-living environment affect the living organisms of the
Pacific Northwest?
 Abiotic factors are non-living conditions that can affect
organisms. Biotic factors are living (or once living) organisms
that affect other organisms.
• Abiotic and biotic factors
○ How do these organisms interact with each other?
 Some organisms may form symbiotic relationships with another.
• Symbiosis, commensalism, mutualism, parasitism.
 Size of populations may be affected by other organisms.
• Carrying capacity, limiting factor, predation, mortality and
natality
 Life can be organized beyond organism. It is organized from
least complex too more complex.
• Species, population, community, ecosystem, and
biosphere.
 Organisms will compete for the same resources.

○ Where does the energy and nutrients come from to fuel the growth of

 Carbon found in organisms comes from the CO2 in the
environment.
• Carbon cycle
 Energy for life comes from the Sun. The energy then flows from
organism to organism but most of the energy is lost to the
environment.
• Photosynthesis, trophic levels, food chains and food webs.

 Organisms can have a dramatic role in their environment.
