ENJOY READING: Only English
Blair needed a break from the indoor life. Sometimes it seemed like he was in his apartment 24/7. He had
recently found a perfect outdoor cure. It was a new coffeehouse which served 45 kinds of coffee and tea. He
liked it because the coffee was good and the place was never overcrowded.
The coffeehouse was only a 10-minute walk, which Blair now took. There were three female customers in the
coffeehouse. None of them were young and pretty. Blair was a little disappointed. Hed prefer to see good-
looking women while he was drinking good coffee, but you cant have everything.
He ordered a large coffee of the day, which was $1.70. He gave the clerk two dollars. He put the change in
the tip jar and took his coffee outside. Blair preferred to drink outside. That way he could watch the traffic on
the street. He liked to try to spot British motorcycles and 1960 station wagons.
He sat at a table under an umbrella, opened his book, and began reading. The book was a self-improvement
book. Blair had been reading it on and off for about two years. He hadnt noticed any improvement. A woman
was approaching the patio. Blair looked up to see if she was attractive. She was. And she was by herself. He
returned to the book as she passed by him. Blair kept looking at the pages, but his mind was on the woman.
A few minutes later, she came outside holding a cup of coffee and sat at the table right next to Blairs. Her
chair was so close to his that he could have reached over and touched her on her right shoulder. There were
four other empty tables on the patio. Why had she sat at this one, so close to him? Was she telling him that she
was available? Was she hoping that he would make a move?
Blair went back to his book. But he wasn't reading the words; he was thinking about the woman. What could he
say to her? How could he break the ice? What was a good line? What blend are you drinking? Your
perfume smells nice." Werent we in the same art class?
But maybe she wasnt interested J in him at all. Maybe she just wanted to sit and drink in peace. Yet why
would she sit right here? His head was spinning. He must say something.
Just then, her cell phone rang. She answered it, then laughed, then started talking animatedly. Thats got to be
her boyfriend, Blair thought.
But from the moment she answered the phone, it didn't matter if she had a boyfriend or not, because she was
speaking another language. Blair was not interested in a girl who didnt speak English. He went back to his
book and his coffee. It tasted good.

TIP
Motivation is half the Work
Boring! Well, thats definitely not the way it works.
Try to find a positive aspect to studying. Why not watch your favorite film in English and write down some
useful words or phrases that you want to remember. You could also read the lyrics of Top 10 songs and try to
understand what they are about. Or check out celebrity sites and learn more about famous actors, bands and
other stars. This sure is good for your vocabulary and on top of that its lots of fun.
Always look on the bright side of life.

SECTION C
READING AND LISTENING
Restaurant Guides:
Dining Out in Style
While I was on a vacation last week, I decided to visit some restaurants to try some of the local cuisine;
however, I didnt have a clue about the types of restaurants available, so I checked an online restaurant guide to
give me some ideas and tips. Mainly, I was interested in seafood restaurants, so I searched for restaurants
within a reasonable walking distance from my hotel, and I found seven of them. Next, I reviewed the online
menus of the places to check the dishes they prepared and the average cost of a meal. However, price is not my
first consideration; I enjoy a restaurant that has a wide selection from which to choose. Next, a restaurants
decor can always add to the dining experience (background music, decorations and wall hangings, seats and
tables, etc.). If Im going to a Mexican restaurant, I would expect to see the restaurant decorated in the Mexican
flavor. Finally, I always consult restaurant reviews to find out what other people thought about the restaurant
and their experiences. What was the quality of the food? Did the server provide fast and friendly service?
Doing some research before you go can make dining a more pleasurable and predictable experience.

SECTION D
PHRASAL VERBS: FORM AND MEANING
Formation
A phrasal verb is a verb combined with an adverb or preposition, and occasionally with an adverb and
preposition.
The price of petrol may go -up (=increase) again next week.
He fell over (= fell to the ground) when he was running for the bus.
She's promised to find-out (= learn/ discover) the name of that new hotel.
Whos going to look after (= take care of) the children when she goes into the hospital?
If you dont understand the meaning, you can look it up (Hind the meaning in a book-in this case a
dictionary).
He doesnt get on with (= have a good relationship with) his parents. (verb + adv + prep)
Meaning
Sometimes the meaning of a phrasal verb is very similar to the base verb, and the adverb just emphasizes
the meaning of the base verb, e.g. stand-up, wake- up, save-up, hurry-up, sit down, lie down and send-
off (e.g a letter). On the other occasions, the adverb adds the idea of completing the action of the verb, e.g
drink-up (=finish your drink) eat-up (finish eating), finish off.
But more often, the meaning of a phrasal verb is very different from the base verb, e.g go-up doesnt mean
the same as go; look after is also quite different from look; and look up is quite different from look-up. An
adverb or preposition can therefore change the meaning of a verb a great deal.
Here are some more examples of this type of phrasal verb.
It took her a long time to get over (=get better/ recover from) her illness.
He told me to carry on (=continue) as far as the traffic lights.
I persuaded my wife to give-up (=stop) smoking.
I cant make any sandwiches because weve run-out of bread. (= the bread is finished/ all used, so we have
no bread)
In the end my next-door neighbor had to come and put-out (=extinguish
/
stop) the fire
MULTIPLE MEANING:
Many phrasal verbs have more than one meaning, so you must he careful when you see a phrasal verb you
think you know, or look up the meaning in a dictionary. In the examples marked the phrasal verb is much
more natural than the explanation in brackets.
It was hot so 1 decided to take off (remove) my jacket.
I am always nervous when the plane takes off (=leaves the ground)
I don't think I'll get through (=finish) this report before five oclock.
I think she'll get through (=pass) the exam.
I picked up the rubbish (=took it from the ground or a low place) and put it in the bin.
I had to go to the shop to pick up (=collect) my photos.
My alarm clock didnt go off (=ring) this morning.
This bomb could go off (=explode) at any minute.
The fish will go off (=go bad) if you dont put it in the fridge.
EXERCISE 1. Fill the gaps to complete the phrasal verb in each sentence.
1. We went round the school and up all the rubbish.
2. 1 dont think they ever out how the man escaped.
3. This milk smells horrible; I think it has .. off.

TIP
Studying 15 minutes per day is more effective than studying 2 hours once every week.
For a whole week, try studying 15 minutes each day. Not less. And definitively not more than that (even if
you could).
You will see that the following day, studying is much more fun, simply because you didn't push it to the limit
the day before.
