Policy Analyst
Located in North York, the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) is a not-for-profit professional association,
providing advocacy and member services in support of the economic and professional interests of engineers across
Ontario.
Reporting to the Manager, Policy and Government Relations, the Policy Analyst works collaboratively with OSPE staff,
volunteers, and stakeholders to carry out responsibilities described below. The position requires a broad knowledge base
and advanced skill-set, as well as the ability to interact effectively with Board/Committee members, outside stakeholders,
and government officials. Professional maturity, flexibility, sound judgment, initiative, and a willingness to undertake
unfamiliar tasks from time to time are required.
Responsibilities:
Issues Management: Identifies, researches and monitors issues of importance to the engineering profession, such as
energy, infrastructure, environment, research and innovation, and the labour market.
Political Action Network: Support activities of the Political Action Network (PAN) including communicating with and
recruiting volunteers, arranging logistics and providing support material for meetings; coordinating and following up on
tasks, maintaining and updating records and statistics, drafting briefing notes and correspondence, and assisting at
training sessions and networking events.
Stakeholder Relations: Participates in consultations with stakeholders, both internal and external, to inform policy
direction and development.
Policy Event Series: Coordinates event series by identifying topics, speakers, material, and preparation of event
summaries, working with staff to arrange logistics. Administers MPP reception at Queens Park.
Task Forces: Coordinates task force activities and assumes responsibility for the completion of action items; drafts
documents and ensures Terms of Reference are followed; coordinates the recruitment of new task force members;
arranges meetings and take minutes.
Senior Staff Support: Prepares briefing materials for and makes recommendations to senior management regarding
policy options.
Internal Reporting: Contributes to progress reports for department staff, the CEO and members of the Board of
Directors, including preparation and coordination of Board data sheets.
Volunteer Management: Participates in OSPE-wide initiatives to engage the members in the advocacy mandate.
Research: Drafts policy position papers and issues statements, prepares and analyses surveys, and responds to the
research requests of OSPE task forces.
Coordinate and provide a daily news review with links to various media for electronic distribution to OSPE members;
Organize, set up template and publish weekly e-newsletter the OSPE Advocate; frequent writing of articles for
e-newsletter and quarterly hard-copy magazine The Voice.
Qualifications:
Degree in public policy, public affairs, political science, or a related discipline, and at least three years equivalent or
related experience;
Excellent research/analytical skills; superior writing ability, including preparation of high-quality communications
materials for a variety of audiences;
Excellent planning, organizing, research, communications and critical thinking skills;
Experience working with, and supporting, volunteer boards/committees preferred;
Association experience and government/public sector advocacy preferred;
High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office tools;
Acumen to learn and use various types of templates for electronic distribution of newsletters and communications;
Knowledge of engineering sector an asset;
Willingness to work flexible/extended hours on occasion.
