ART | AVANT-GARDE | GRAPHIC NOVEL
Does art have a future? Performance genres like opera,
theater, music and dance are thriving all over the world,
but the visual arts have been in slow decline for nearly 40
years. No major fgure of profound infuence has emerged
in painting or sculpture since the waning of Pop Art and the
birth of Minimalism in the early 1970s.
(Camille Paglia)
I wasnt a big fan of social anthropology. And, luckily, that
created room for me to work in visual arts because I sort of
ignored my requirements. I think I was attracted to social
anthropology because I liked to travel and was always inter-
ested in far-off places.
(Darren Aronofsky)
The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance
of things, but their inward signifcance.
(Aristotle)

an open novel, for you to project your mind into. Every page is a stimulating feld for your
imagination
The images are raw scans of original pages made using cheap acrylic paint on
sheets of ordinary offce paper. The pages were made over a period of 4 or 5
years. It took a few weeks to select which hundred to assemble into this book,
and a few more weeks to decide on which order to put the pages. Most of the
marks were made using a technique known as decalcomania. You spread ink
or paint on a surface, then print off that surface, which results in chaotic,
organic, blotty shapes.

SHROUDS is an abstract graphic novel that suggests a narrative that it cannot
quite divulgeeach page being a scene or a portal into a whole that clears only
to fade. If Henry Michaux had been haunted by faces and creatures that were
themselves haunted by his thoughts and visions of them, he might well have
created something like this book.
Gary J Shipley is a writer and artist based in the UK. He is the author of eight
books of various sizes, the latest of which is a collection of poetry forthcoming
from Blue Square Press. His work has been published in Gargoyle, The Black
Herald, Paragraphiti, continent., Glossator, >kill author, 3:AM, and others.

Australias long-lost comic. Discovered in a deceased estate was Barrie Earls
hand-drawn comics saga of the Chaco War. Comprehensively researched and
drawn with historical accuracy, Typhoon Tommy is an archival gem a relic of
Australian comics culture, perhaps even its last classical fourish before the
industry was overwhelmed with American comics. Steeped in a rich adven-
ture-comics tradition, although an Australian comic, it brings a unique per-
spective to what was an international war, World War Two.

POETRY | POETICS
Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape
from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but
an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who
have personality and emotions know what it means to want
to escape from these things.
(T.S. Eliot)
When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds
him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of
mans concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and di-
versity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleans-
es.
(John F. Kennedy)
Poetry, even when apparently most fantastic, is always a
revolt against artifce, a revolt, in a sense, against actuali-
ty.

PUNKTUATION (by Teri-Louise Kelly)
PDF | 94 pages | links, menu
978-0-9870824-0-4
Reaching out across the bleached white veldt to infect the fickering screen
with a moment of insanity, Teri Louise Kellys short story/poetry anthology
Punktuation is a literary oil slick drifting slowly toward the burning shore.
Having already deconstructed her art form with a veritable glossary of bas-
tardisations, incestuous syntax and gob-spitting grammar, the erstwhile Ms
Kelly continually has her execution stayed. There is no way of telling fact
from fction, poetry from toilet door graffti, she claims, and in Punktuation
she drifts (seemingly aimlessly) from subject matter to subject matter as casu-
ally as a rent boy wandering Piccadilly Circus looking for a buyer. So, are you
feeling lucky punk?

A RARE & VACANT HOUR (by Ivan Rehorek)
PDF | 52 pages | links, menu
978-0-9807303-7-1
These stylish works of art are zany, quirky, cutting, sad, funny, frisky, bois-
terous, even at times reverential. They convey vast amounts of biographical
information in easy to read bite-size pieces. Romanticism permeates Ivans
love lyrics, music lyrics and love-music lyrics. Even so, intense feeling is some-
times qualifed by a kind of surrealism and by the use of striking puns which
are paradoxically part of the lyricism. Whatever Romanticism remains in Ivans
other poems is sorely tested by his travels to arid regions and his portraits of
unknown, well-known and too well-known characters. Vclav Havel and Adolf
Hitler share pages with Attila the Glum and the deluded individual who could
have been Beethovenor perhaps Beethovens cat. (Dr. Graham Rowlands)

A fool stands at a precipice. Chained at the ankle, he can only gaze down,
longing for the fall. What makes him a fool - the longing? Or the chain?
A case study in the censorship of poetry in the C21st. Anthologized for a lim-
ited time only - with a tell-all introduction - are the controversial poems of
Australias Porno Poet, an anonymous scribe who scandalized the parochial
South Australian capital city of Adelaide in 2007-2009 by reading obscene
verse at the towns arts-conscious literary establishment, the ironically named
Friendly Street, who responded with censorship and threats of physical vi-
olence so strong that security was consdered for subsequent poetry recitals.

FICTION | SHORT FICTION
Its in literature that true life can be found. Its under the
mask of fction that you can tell the truth.
(Gao Xingjian)
A good writer should be able to write comedic work that
made you laugh, and scary stuff that made you scared, and
fantasy or science fction that imbued you with a sense of
wonder, and mainstream journalism that gave you clear and
concise information in a way that you wanted it.
(Neil Gaiman)
Fiction is like a spiders web, attached ever so slightly per-
haps, but still attached to life at all four corners. Often the
attachment is scarcely perceptible.

But here, in A Double Pass to Aberration we witness Kelly toying playfully
with vampires and zombies in alternative ways in two humour-laced genre and

Sexual surrealism from the light-hearted to the incipiently Sadean; from the

My routine was simple.

isnt going to help you unless you have something to say.

anymore - its disappearing little by little. Things change.
We have to change with them. Theres no point in liking or

wanted something more: he wanted the star to be a bona fde sex symbol. To
achieve this intended sex symbol status, the producer intended a sustained

heterosexual patriarchy posed by transgressive homosexuality. Thus, in one

Writing nonfction is more like sculpture, a matter of
shaping the research into the fnished thing. Novels are
like paintings, specifcally watercolors. Every stroke you
put down you have to go with. Of course you can rewrite,
but the original strokes are still there in the texture of the
thing.

The Religious Right, primarily in the USA but now worldwide through evangeli-

war against Christianity. The battleground is the defnition of hate speech
vs. religious freedom. These religious leaders repeatedly claim that Christian-
ity and Christians, are under attack by liberal-democratic elites intent on in-
ternational education, moral relativism and, above all, the humanist acknowl-
edgement of the homosexual agenda at the expense of traditional marriage
and morality. And every war needs a survival guide.

A flm is - or should be - more like music than like fction.
It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme,

(Stanley Kubrick)
Itll be the Internet and piracy that will kill flm. Theres a
philosophy that the Internet should be free, but the reality
is that piracy will destroy the flm industry and flm as an art
form because its expensive to make a movie. Maybe youll

then start up again some other way.

DEATH OF FILM (2014: d. Robert Cettl)
70 mins | Mature Audiences
What you are about to see is an iPheature. It was shot entirely on an iPhone
over a period of six months, in two countries. At the time the individual shots
were taken, no plan existed as to their eventual use. They were shot when-
ever, however and wherever the philmmaker intended, for whatever reason
existed at the time of their philming. Once the iPhone memory was full,
the individual shots were edited together in chronological order, each shot
separated by a one second gap. Whatever interpretation or meaning you as
a viewer ascribe to this iPheature is entirely of your own device. Perhaps it
has no meaning. Perhaps it is just a chronological, fragmented assembly of
phootage covering six months in the philm-makers life. But then, perhaps
not. Perhaps not.

AUDIO BOOK
Im kind of old-school and love nothing more than sitting,
opening a book, and reading it. But I also love listening to
audio books.
(Nick Cave)
Presidential power was overruled by the high bench in July
1974, when President Nixon was ordered to turn over some
audio tapes of his White House conversations, including the
smoking gun tape of June 23, 1972, that revealing the Wa-
tergate cover up.

More Academics should make videos, post audio, post
lectures, offer articles and more. Youll enjoy it: Ive had
threats and blackmail, abuse, smears and formal complaints
with forged documentation.

LOVE IN WORDS & FEET (by Teri-Louise
Kelly)
mp3 | Mature Audiences
The choices she makes in punctuation, spelling and form enhance the my way
of Kellys poetry, and as were privy to her background (hate to belabour a
point but this is a major point to be made), it totally works. Of course she
should break the rules, do things her way. Of course she should be intelligently
quirky... Shes inserting her must-write / must-have-poetry impulse into her
lifes anguish and, for me, it doesnt get lost in the rhythm. Its essential. The
rhythm, in fact, is very beat. And shes a successful spoken word artist, too,
which should come as no surprise (many of the poems in this collection can be
found on her just-released CD Love in Words and Feet).

the opportunity to both relay his personal philosophy of sexual freedom, spoof
the self-importance of the sexual revolution and try to seduce the interviewer.
pornographic flmmaking - far from the sterotypical sleazy pornographer,
Cemano emerges a literate, clever, exciting and vibrant eroticist.
