Dear Business Professional:
When you make business and consumer purchases
are you thinking about where those businesses are
located or where their products are manufactured?
You may have selected that product/service because it
was top-quality and cost-effective or simply because
thats what youre familiar with. But, with innovations
happening every day in the private sector, especially in
your own backyard, its important for you to explore
your options while getting in the mind set of buying
local. To help you jumpstart your exploration, Id like
to invite you to the one event where you can build
this knowledge, while developing personal business
connections with 200 local companies The Lancaster
Chambers Business Expo on Thursday, October 9 at
the Lancaster County Convention Center from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m.
The Business Expo is our platform to magnify
and reinforce the advantages of doing business
within the community. When more businesses and
consumers make the choice to buy local, more money
stays in the community and money spent locally can
increase productivity, resulting in more employment
opportunities and a better business climate.
Additionally, because many local businesses and
individuals contribute greatly in their support of local
organizations and charities by re-circulating dollars
back into the community, the entire County benefts
from a better quality of life.
During the Expo, youll be introduced to 200 local
companies and to time- and cost-saving products,
services and technologies to make your job easier
and more productive. Bring plenty of business cards
as this day is all about relationship-building! For a
complete list of exhibitors, see pages 16-19 or visit
lancasterchamber.com/expo2014.
There is no cost to attend the Business Expo with a
business card ($20 without a business card). For more
information about the Expo and other happenings,
check-out the inside of this tabloid to plan this business
building day accordingly.
I hope youll join me in thinking local and attending
the Business Expo!

The Lancaster Chamber launched its Think
Local campaign in October 2011, as a Lancaster
Chamber led, community-wide initiative to
improve our local economy by encouraging
consumers and business decision-makers
to support local businesses when making
purchases. Since the launch, the initiative has
more than 660 participants who have signed the
Declaration of Understanding; 7 partners; 748
Facebook fans; 1,054 followers on Twitter; and
new this year, an app! Think Local has been the
topic of many conversations, earned the attention
of the local media and received a national award
for communications excellence. The Chamber
is fully committed to this campaign and is
encouraged by a strong team of supporters.
W
?
The goal of the program is to improve the
local economy through encouraging business
decision-makers and consumers to think about
buying local when making purchases. While
convenience and the lowest price may seem
ideal to focus on at the time of a purchase, its
important to think long-term if we truly want
to keep the local economy strong and friends,
family and neighbors working. There are many
benefts associated with making local purchases,
including:
More money stays in the community
Money spent locally recirculates back into
the community helping to fund non-proft and
community organizations.
Helps create and support jobs Money
spent locally increases business productivity and
creates a better business climate resulting in
more employment opportunities.
Strengthens the community and economy
The cycle of creating and spending wealth
locally helps to strengthen the economy and
broader community.
Local business improves the quality of life
Local business owners and their employees
contribute fnancially and volunteer their time to
support local organizations and charities, which
directly impacts the broader community.
Enhanced customer service When one
buys products locally they are doing business
with people they know, making any future
services, repairs or follow-ups simple and
convenient.
H T L
?
To help keep thinking local top of mind, The
LAccording to our 2013 Membership Survey,
48% of companies are doing more business with
local companies today and 70% of individuals
are doing more business locally than they were
two years ago.
W
T L?
The Think Local program is not limited to
Lancaster Chamber members, but anyone who
makes business-to-business and/or consumer
purchases. If businesses or organizations are
committed to the concept of thinking local frst
when making purchases, and understands and
supports the core tenets of the program, then a
representative from their company can sign the
Think Local Declaration of Understanding and
receive usage rights of the Think Local logo, as
well as a packet of information and resources
that support the campaign. Businesses and
organizations signing the declaration are able
to use the logo designation in their ads, on their
website, printed collateral materials, in their
store windows and in other ways to associate
their organization with the Think Local initiative.
In addition, if the company is a member of The
Chamber, they will receive a designation next to
their business name in The Lancaster Chambers
online directory, will be eligible to participate
in a number of special advertising opportunities
with media partners offering discounted rates
and specials, as well as be included in the Think
Local mobile app.

The Lancaster Chamber
Benets a Business
A national survey of 2,000 adults revealed that a business that
is a member of its local chamber of commerce is seeing increased
favorability. The second survey in ve years by The Schapiro Group,
an Atlanta-based market research rm, found positive attitudes among
adults had increased from their ndings in 2007. For example, when
consumers know that a business is a member of its local chamber, the
business gains:
68% increase in local reputation;
73% increase in consumer awareness; and
80% increase in likelihood of patronage.
Supporting the previous ndings, the study also revealed that 86%
of respondents believe that the local chamber helps to create local
jobs and promotes local economic development.
The Schapiro study results are clear: Positive perception increases
among consumers and business decision-makers when a business is
known as a member of its local chamber.
