October 5, 2014

Thank you, brothers and sisters in Christ, for your caring concerns, cards, meals, visits and
especially your prayers for Gods blessings, strength, comfort and healing powers during my
recent illness. Our prayers were answered. It is now time for healing and thanksgiving.
Again, thank you for your divine help. God bless you all.

Yours in Christ ~

Norris Miertschin

October is Pastor Appreciation Month

Memorial has been blessed with faithful Pastors and Vicars through its
history. On October 12
th
, between services, the Elders and Leadership
Team will host a cake and punch reception for our pastoral staff and we
would love to see everyone there. For those who wish, there will be
baskets available to leave cards and well-wishes.

Volunteer Opportunity

The Society of St. Stephens at the Katy Methodist Church is in need of a volunteer driver for delivery
meals to shut-ins on every other Thursday. This is done at about 10:30 am. Several of our members
are already involved in this program. Please contact Marie Lau 281-578-0964 for further details.

Rice Harvest Festival

Each year on the second weekend in October the City of Katy hosts the Rice Harvest
Festival. Our church has a prime location in the center of the festival and as such, we
open our Welcome Center bathrooms, a place to cool down, and a place to pray. We
also host a Children's Carnival where the proceeds are split between missions and
youth activities. To do this we need many volunteers and it is a great opportunity to
serve together as a family. Volunteer times are n two hour blocks. 8am-5pm Saturday
and 11am-5pm Sunday. Volunteer roles include monitoring the Welcome Center and
directing people to bathrooms as well as keeping them clean and stocked, praying for individuals, or working the carnival
stations. Carnival stations include: snow cones, dunk booth, lollipop tree, fishing game, ring toss, and bounce house. If
you are interested in volunteering, contact Linda Elmore (lelmore@acosta.com; 281.728.1322) or Nathan Engman
(nathan@mlckaty.com; 281.391.0171) and check out the sign-up sheets in the Welcome Center.
HELPERS NEEDED

This year our Children's Christmas program will be Wednesday December 17
th
at
7 pm. April Ramsey is in need of extra helpers to ensure the program goes
smoothly. Parents who are willing to help plan and distribute costumes on rehearsal days
and during the actual program as well as helpers to run lines, set the stage and to simply
help cue kids and sit with them in pews while they wait for their turns are needed. If this
sounds like something you are interested in, please email April. Dress rehearsal will most
likely be Saturday December 6
th
at 10am.

THE WISHING TREE IS COMING!

For many years, Memorial Lutheran Church members have supported a Wishing Tree
during the holiday season. Congregation members nominate families/individuals
who could use some help with presents/food. They can be congregation members,
coworkers, relatives, neighbors, friends, etc. It's hard to believe it's time for
nominations again!! If you know of someone we could bless this upcoming Christmas season with presents/food, please
contact Pastor Davis, Vicar Mike, or Deb Plautz (281-395-4681/bobplautz1@aol.com) by Sunday, October.19.

Other things congregation members can do NOW to help make the Wishing Tree successful:
--bring your unused coupons from Sunday's paper and put them in the box by the elevator. Deb Plautz will use them to
buy food for the families.
--ask for "paper" when you grocery shop and put the bags in the box by the elevator. SHE NEEDS AT LEAST 200
BAGS FOR THE FOOD GIVEN OUT.

SUNDAY SCHOOL THIS WEEK

This week our kids will continue looking into the book of Genesis as
they explore the story of God's covenant with Abraham. Kid's should
bring Bibles with them to class as well as their passports. A new
memory verse this week will be from Genesis 17:7. "I will establish
my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and
your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your
God and the God of your descendants after you." We will also
continue memorizing the Apostle's Creed and the Lord's Prayer. Sunday School is 9:30-10:30 upstairs in the Loomis
Center for pre-k- 5th grade. Nursery age kids (2 and under) meet in the Nursery in the Welcome Center.

TRUNK OR TREAT Year 3!

Once again well be gathering in Brookshire Brothers parking lot from 6-8 pm. We love this
opportunity to be visible in our community and share Jesus love for all. Last year over 100
families came by - many of them unchurched. We hope you can join us again this year (or make
it your first year!). All you need to do is park your car by our area and bring some treats to
share. Well also have some carnival-style games as families walk through. Come ready to
spread the love of Jesus and shine bright for Him!!. Sign-up sheets are in the Welcome Center.
