Course Description ACTPrep We could establish the course in one of two ways: 1. Part of students daily schedule, credit-bearing, and .2 FTE assignment 2. Outside of a students daily schedule, non-credit bearing, similar to students who take prep courses two times/week at night with teacher paid stipend AfricanAmerican Literature Students will read, analyze, and discuss literary works in different forms and media written by African American writers. BecominganAuthentic Leader Students will learn key leadership skills along with how to problem solve, make decisions, communicate, group dynamics, time management, team building and engage in hands-on leadership projects at his/her home school. CareerandCollege Exploration Students will explore educational and career opportunities available to them including how to get accepted and pay for college, research scholarships, learn self-awareness strategies, how to find a job, how to network, and how to plan for a successful future. ChicagoHistory Students will have the opportunity to explore and discover Chicago and its surrounding suburbs through projects, activities, and discussions. In addition, to the history of Chicago, an emphasis will be placed on the unique geographical, economic, cultural, and social character of the city and the role Chicago played in the growth of the United States. CreditRecovery Online Credit Recovery options for those who are old and near, Seniors, and those who are young and far, Freshman, to help students get back on the academic path toward graduation. These options will be completely separate from Canvas and will run on a different platform at a self-directed student pace. A teacher of record will be present who will oversee student progress including providing them emotional and academic support when needed. FilmandLiterature Students will explore film as a form of literature. Film and Literature expands students critical reading skills to combine the analysis of film texts alongside that of literary texts from classical works to contemporary literature. Literature and film pairings will guide students to how elements of film style and literary style are instrumental in creating meaning. Students will understand and learn to appreciate the relationships between history, literature, and film. SportsandLiterature Students will read the literature of sports as it appears in various forms, including novels, biographies, poetry, short stories, drama, film, magazine, and newspaper journalism. Some of the finest authors have written literature about sports, displaying the best and worst of human behavior under the most dramatic situations. SuccessfulStart,the HighSchoolExperience 9 th grade course available to select students identified by 8 th grade counselors who feel students need extra support as they transition into high school. This course will help 9 th graders get off to a successful high school start including preparing them for his/her next four high school years. Sample topics of interest include but are not limited to: note-taking, organization, joining clubs, self-advocating, time- management, and built-in social-emotional curriculum to help students become more resilient, possess more grit, and adopt a growth- mindset. This course will help prevent students from becoming at-risk in not graduating within four years. SustainableEnergy Students will explore the meaning of sustainability in the context of energy use in society including comparing the costs and benefits of different energy sources and power systems, and developing awareness of social and economic principles that apply to deeper understanding of sustainable energy policies. WritersWorkshop Opportunity for students to boost his/her writing skills. Placement is determined by teacher and counselor recommendation. Lessons will include instruction in the CORE areas of writing development such as focus, organization, fluency, conventions and voice. Students will develop his/her academic writing skills through a variety of writing projects.
