guidelines for academic honesty. All information included in assignments should be properly
cited and referenced. Students are expected to avoid plagiarism and cite sources completely,
including all electronic sources. Also, note that cut and paste is considered plagiarism unless
properly cited, even if it is from course material. Students are advised to check the latest ECU
web sites for clarification on plagiarism and how to avoid it.

At a minimum, a 0 will be given for any assignment found in violation of the Student Code of
Conduct and a final grade of an F may be assigned. The ECU Student Code of Conduct may
be found at http://www.ecu.edu/PRR/11/30/01/.

On-line curriculum material is also available at http://academy.redhat.com and the ECU Red Hat
Academy server rha-server (accessible only through the lab VPN connection).

Computer and Software Programs:
The Department of Technology Systems requires that all students have additional equipment for this class.

Students in a Distance Education (DE) section of this class must have a Linux-compatible computer
dedicated for the course. There are additional on-line requirements explained at URL
http://www.options.ecu.edu.

Software for this course consists of one DVD that contains the Linux operating system, Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 6,1 (RHEL 6.1). A VMware VM (virtual machine) image is available for students who have VMware
Workstation / Server installed on their computer.

Mr Lee Toderick Updated October 8, 2014 Page 4 of 13

The same VM is available to students through the ECU VCL (virtual computer lab) and vCloud Director.
Your instructor will provide additional information about these options.

All students must be enrolled in the Red Hat Academy.

Enrollment requires several steps:

1. To be added as a student in the Red Hat Academy, you must have a Red Hat Login id.
Your user id should be your NEW ECU email id, such as studenta01 (case sensitive). This
can be created at: https://www.redhat.com/wapps/ugc/register.html. Choose Create a new
Personal Login.

2. When you have created your Red Hat user id, please email it to your instructor. Your
instructor will acknowledge receipt of your email and provide an estimated time when
the class will be available to you.

3. Your instructor will notify you when you have been added. At that time you will be able to
access curriculum material and take concept exams from URL http://academy.redhat.com.

Note: To take lab exams, your computer must be connected to the internal ECU Red Hat Academy
server. Face-to-face and DE students will have a VPN client automatically configured on the dedicated
Linux computer after executing script /root/Desktop/vpnsetup..

Important Course Documents:

Following are the documents with an explanation on our Blackboard course site. Please read these

Grading Policy:

1. A Class pre-test has been posted on the Blackboard class platform. It is open-notes and open-documents.
The test may be taken as often as necessary to earn 100%, but must be completed before the due date,
shown in the Detailed Course Schedule, below.
2. All lab and test grades will be posted as soon as completed at http://academy.redhat.com. When
taking tests or submitting labs, be sure to use ONLY this website. Refer to the FAQ for information about
how to use the RHA (Red Hat academy) grade book.

Mr Lee Toderick Updated October 8, 2014 Page 5 of 13

3. Each workbook has multiple chapters. Most chapters have an end-of-chapter multiple choice test and lab
test. Workbooks have an end-of-workbook multiple-choice test and lab test. To receive grade credit for the
workbook, all multiple-choice tests and lab exercises must be completed. Workbook partial credit is NOT
awarded. **NOTE** All multiple-choice tests may be taken only once. The workbook lab exercise may be
taken only once for score, but retaken to determine what was configured incorrectly. The chapter lab
exercises (online exercises) may be taken more than once for score! **NOTE** DO NOT START A
WORKBOOK TEST OR A LAB TEST UNTIL READY. Once a test is started, it must be completed.

4. Environment for test taking- when completing the multiple choice tests, any computer and operating system
with network connectivity and web browser connected to http://academy.redhat.com may be used. For ALL
lab tests, use your RHEL 6.1 OS and insure there is a VPN connection to the RHA classroom server (rha-
server).

5. When computing the workbook averages, the lowest, NON-ZERO, workbook score for RHA030, and the
lowest, NON-ZERO, workbook score for RHA130 will be omitted. For example, 8 workbooks are
required for RHA030. Mary completes all 8, and her lowest score is 70. The 70 is discarded, and her
workbook average for RHA030 is derived from the sum of the remaining scores divided by 7. Another
student, however, has missed one workbook and has grades for 7 of the 8 workbooks. Of the 7 grades, 70 is
the lowest. In this case, the 70 is discarded and the workbook average is derived from the sum of the
remaining scores and zero divided by 7. The one workbook with a grade of zero is averaged into the
workbook grade. Therefore, it is important to complete ALL required workbooks.

6. It is strongly recommended that you follow the course schedule and complete every workbook by the end of
the week when it is covered. Coursework due dates are shown below. Any work not completed by the due
date, 8:00AM, will result in a grade of 0 for that workbook:
RHA030 workbook 1 must be completed by 8:00AM, May 28, to receive credit for work.
RHA030 workbooks 2 and 3 must be completed by 8:00AM, June 4, to receive credit for work.
RHA030 workbooks 4 and 5 must be completed by 8:00AM, June 11, to receive credit for work.
RHA030 workbooks 7, 9, and 10 must be completed by 8:00AM, June 26, to receive credit for work.

RHA130 workbooks 1 and 2 must be completed by 8:00AM, July 2, to receive credit for work.
RHA130 workbook 3 must be completed by 8:00AM, July 9, to receive credit for work.
RHA130 workbooks 4 and 5 must be completed by 8:00AM, July 16, to receive credit for work.
RHA130 workbooks 6, 7, and 8 must be completed by 8:00AM, July 31 to receive credit for work.

7. Bonus opportunities:
RHA030 Bonus for all RHA030 work completed by 8:00AM, June 23.
RHA130 BONUS for all RHA130 work completed by July 28 .
The HOSBF has a 10 point bonus problem, good toward the final exam grade.

8. The final exam is cumulative, hands-on skills-based. It is closed notes, closed book, no outside material
permitted. Naturally, any built-in help on the Linux host is permitted. The student will be presented with a
scenario and must configure a computer with Linux to meet the specifications. Part 1 will be distributed prior
to Part 2, and consists of a basic modification to a RHEL6.1 host. Part 2 is timed, 90 minutes, and continues
modification to the RHEL 6.1 host begun in Part 1. Part 1 and Part 2 grading will be performed by the
instructor at the completion of Part 2. Maximum points is 100.

9. One workbook has been omitted from this course. RHA030 workbook 8 is for student review. This does not
minimize the importance of the workbook material, but students may find the material requires time that is
not available during the course. RHA 030 workbooks 6 and 8 are not computed in the RHA030 workbook
average.

10. A students grade is computed from workbook scores, hand-on skills-based final, and attendance
participation. The following chart shows the grading scale for this course:

Weighted Scale for Grades
Workbook Grade Average: 70%
Final Exam: 20%
Participation: 10%

* To earn an A or A- for the course, a student must:
Complete RHA030 workbook 6 with an average of at least 70 by 31 July.
Complete the final exam with a score of least 60.
Meet the score requirement for that grade.

Due Date Extensions:
1. If there is an anticipated family, work or medical related circumstance, contact the instructor
before an assignment/quiz/test due date for an extension without penalty. Requests must be
received by 8:00 a.m., at least 1 school/working day prior to the due date. Supporting
documentation must be provided.

2. Technology failures on the night before a case study is due will not normally be awarded an
extension.

Exam/Test Variances:
1. No exam make ups will be given unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor.
Missed exams earn a grade of 0.

2. If an on-line exam encounters technology problems that shut down the exam or otherwise
prevent completion, the student must immediately e-mail the instructor. In general:
Exams will be re-set and extra time allowed for the student to retake the exam.
Multiple technology failures will require phone review with the instructor for root
cause determination.

Extra Credit:
1. Opportunity for extra credit may be provided but only if there is equal opportunity for
everyone enrolled in the course. No extra credit will be allowed on an individual basis.

2. No extra credit assignments will be offered after the last regularly scheduled class exam
(excluding the final exam) or assignment due date for the regular class schedule. In no case
shall extra credit be considered or allowed after the last regular class meeting time.

Grade Challenge:
1. Any test or assignment grade may be challenged per the following policy:

2. Challenge must be done in writing by the student and submitted to the instructor via
e-mail within 1 calendar week of the grade posting to Blackboard.

Mr Lee Toderick Updated October 8, 2014 Page 7 of 13

3. The e-mail must explain the reasons why the scoring is incorrect and must provide a
specific text or other reference to validate the student concern.

4. No grades will be changed after the start of ECUs final exams.

Group Projects:
1. There are no group projects in this course.

Lectures:
Lectures will be not be recorded. You are responsible to make up any work conducted during
class. You must find out what was covered from one of your classmates or from information
provided through Blackboard.

Attendance Policy and Class Participation:

1. Attendance for this course is MANDATORY. For face-to-face students, this includes all lectures.
For distance education students, this includes the chat sessions and timely response to emails.
Arriving late and/or leaving class early is disruptive and discourteous to the instructor and to other
students in the course, and may be considered an absence. A maximum of two lectures or one
chat may be missed for whatever reason, before the absences affect a final grade. Refer to the
following table for the class absence policy:

F-2-F Absences DE Absences Grade Reduction
1- 2 1 No penalty
3 2 50% deduction from participation
4 3 100% deduction from participation
5-6 4-5 100% deduction from participation
And 1 letter grade deduction
> 6 > 5 100% deduction from participation
And 2 letter grades deduction

2. The class sessions will consist of lectures and class discussion. Attendance and
PARTICIPATION is essential to learning the topics presented. Additional material on difficult
concepts will be posted on our Blackboard site. As a student, you are expected to complete
assigned readings prior to class and be prepared to participate in the discussion. By asking
questions and sharing your ideas and experiences, the class will be more beneficial for everyone.

3. Students are expected to be on time for all class meetings, including the first and last scheduled
class. Absences from late registration may not be automatically excused.

4. For on-line students, a chat will be held each week on _Monday, 7:00PM- 8:00PM_
http://centra.ecu.edu/. A Samba Meeting tutorial and an equipment compatibility list is available
from this site. If this is the first time using Samba Meeting, when the software is started for the
first time a Client will be downloaded on your computer. This will take several minutes, so please
test your connection early; otherwise, you will arrive late for class. Students who miss
synchronous chat may view the chat archive for that week, and receive attendance credit if the
chat is viewed within 6 days of the chat.

Assignment Feedback Policy:
Assignments graded manually will generally be graded within 1 week of the assignment due date. An
announcement will be posted in Blackboard if extenuating circumstances prevent this. Students should
e-mail the instructor with any questions regarding timing.

Assignment Submission Policy:
Mr Lee Toderick Updated October 8, 2014 Page 8 of 13

1. All homework assignments are due as stated in the Syllabus; any modification during the
semester and will be announced and recorded in Blackboard.

2. No assignments will be accepted for grade after the due date, unless written approval has been
granted by the instructor in advance.

3. Assignments CANNOT be accepted through e-mail. Unless specifically authorized by the
instructor, no credit will be given for work submitted via e-mail.

Communication Policy:
1. Blackboard will be used as the course delivery system. The announcement function in
Blackboard will be the main form of posting notifications. When an announcement is posted, you
will receive an e-mail containing the announcement. Announcements will remain for the duration
of the course.

2. All announcements and course communications will be provided via ECU email accounts and
Blackboard. Students are required to access and utilize their ECU Pirate email accounts in this
course daily during the work-week. Personal or work email accounts should not be used for
communications in this course.

3. Requests for additional information or questions should be submitted to the instructor via e-mail.
I normally respond to emails within 24 hours of receipt during the work-week. If a response is
NOT received within the 24 hour window, please resend.

Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy:
For face to face lectures and labs, cell phones should be turned off prior to class. If the
phone is needed for an anticipated emergency or the student is on-call, notify the
instructor of the situation prior to class. Computers may only be used for class
discussion. Repeat offenders will be asked to leave, and the absence counted against
the student.

Computer and Software Programs:
This course will use the RHEL 6.1 Linux OS. University equipment such as VCL and Lab
Manager may also be available.

Professional Expectations:
Complete all homework assignments professionally- this includes proof reading, spelling
and grammatical checking. Students are expected to follow the format provided for each

Ways to Contact Professor:
1. Best method is by e-mail (listed above). I access my messages on a regular basis.
Please describe the nature of the problem that you are having as completely as you can.
In most cases, we can resolve the problem without having to wait for a face-to-face
meeting. During normal working hours, Monday through Friday, I will respond within 24
hours. If you do not receive an email from me after 24 hours, please resend.

2. Second choice is by office phone number (listed above). The phone system is equipped with
voice messaging that I can access from off-campus. Leave a detailed message about the
problem(s) that you are having, and a number where you can be reached. During normal working
hours, I will respond within 24 hours.

DE and Class Contingency Plan:
1. For DE Courses:
As with any technology, Internet based teaching tools have the potential for
technical problems. To prepare for course downtime or a performance issue that
makes the system speed unusable, please follow these steps at your earliest
convenience:

Save and/or print a copy of the syllabus, syllabus addendum, and
course material such as VCL instructions.

Save my email address and office phone number (at the top of this
syllabus) so that you are able to contact me as necessary.

Save names/email addresses of fellow classmates, so that you may
contact each other through Piratemail.

Determine that the problem is with Internet based course site, and not
your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Visit your favorite web site or
www.ecu.edu, if these pages are available, then more than likely it is an
Internet based course site problem.

If Centra (http://centra.aos.ecu.edu) is not available during a scheduled
synchronous chat, send me an email. I will respond to the class with an email
within 10 minutes of a scheduled chat with an update. Check the Archived chat
sessions for any material missed.

If you are not able to take an online exam, then email me as soon as possible
with a number where I can reach you, or call me. There will be sufficient time for
you to take the online exam.

If Blackboard is not available and you have an assignment to submit via the digital drop
box, then email me with a description of the problem. I cannot accept assignments
received via email- there is no guarantee that I would receive the assignment.

2. For Classroom courses:
If a situation develops that prevents classroom access and restriction to your home or
dorm room, I will keep the class updated via email.
