The D C M D iagnostic C om m unication
M aster is the best solution for the control
of actuators from a rem ote control room
through a tw o-w ire transm ission-m ode
bus com m unication system .
D esigned and engineered by B iffi, the
D C M integrates the highest experience in
actuation technology w ith the flexibility and
operative reliability of an open and
standard bus com m unication protocol:
LO N W O R KS
.
The proven technology and design of the
D C M can easily m eet the requests of
m odern netw orks and can ensure reliable
data com m unication in the severest
operative conditions; this unit offers as a
plus the possibility of being integrated or
retrofitted w ith any other devices using the
LO N W O R KS
protocol.
DCM: technical description
The D C M system is com posed of three
m ain elem ents: the m aster station itself
(single or redundant), the fields units (i.e.
actuators or other devices installed
on-field) and the tw o-w ire loop cables.
The m ain purposes of the D C M system
are:
To interconnect field devices (i.e. B IFFI
actuators series IC O N and IC O N 2000
w ith LO N W O R KS interface card) w ith
the superior control level in the system
(i.e. D C S or PLC ) through a M O D B U S
R TU interface card;
To perform , through the user-friendly
operator interface panel, all the
necessary control and m aintenance
operations for the plant, w ith detailed
graphic pages for each specific device
under control;
To set up the fieldbus configuration w ith
all the functions for the m anagem ent of
each single device. W ith D C M no
additional tools or softw are are required.
Each node requires a different
allocation in the D C M m em ory and
consequently the D C M m axim um
capacity is strictly related to the type
and num bers of nodes connected
w ithin the netw ork.
The D C M accepts optional m em ory
expansion w henever a particular
application requires to connect
several nodes to the sam e netw ork.

Key features
E th e rn e t c o n n e c tivity: - O n-board Ethernet w ith standard TC P/IP;
- Integrated 2 ports sw itch on C PU to connect a M aster D C M to a Slave
D C M and a PC ;
M o d b u s lin e s: - Perform ances are not influenced by the serial lines activity;
- Each M O D BU S line m anages independent 12 bits scaling on the M O D BU S
analogue registers;
The D C M transfers all the inform ation from the field and from the sam e
D C M to the higher lever of the control system (D C S or SC AD A). This
function gives total control of the plant. D ata are transm itted, by M O D B U S
R TU com m unication protocol, through tw o com pletely independent
serial lines so as to obtain a redundant connection.
The M O D B U S interface is obtained w ith the data contained in a
configuration file: these data are relevant to the variables transm itted w ith
each actuator and to the actuator physical sequence on M O D B U S m ap.
The M O D B U S interface is no w ay linked to the physical connections of
the nodes in the field.
Group management
An innovative node m anagem ent system , defined by groups, w as introduced for easier control of
the field devices connected to a D C M . W ith this functionality, the devices connected to the D C M can
be grouped into hom ogenous w holes (i.e. the actuators in the pum p room , or in another area of the
plant) and be displayed as such on the D C M screen.
This system allow s to logically break a com plex netw ork dow n into sm aller, easily controllable
system s. W ith groups m anagem ent it is possible to have a m odular and flexible vision of the w hole
system in a w ay w hich is totally independent of the physical connection of the nodes w ithin the field.
W ith group m anagem ent it is possible to sim ultaneously send configuration com m ands to all the
devices in the sam e group.
Access to the system - Login
The access to the D C M pages and the availability to the com m and operation is regulated by an
access control system based on the identification of the operators through passw ord control (login).
The D C M considers the follow ing four operators:
O B S E R VE R C an access page visualisation w ith no possibility of sending com m ands
or m aking any m odifications. N o passw ord required.
O P E R AT O R Responsible of process operation; can send com m ands to all the connected
devices. For exam ple, the O perator can enter the IC O N m enu and send a
C lose com m and.
M A I N TA I N E R R esponsible of process m aintenance; can access all operation com m ands
and configure the connected devices. For exam ple, the M aintainer
can enter the IC O N configuration page and m odify som e param eters.
A D M I N I S T R AT O R H as the full control of the plant and m anages the operation, m aintenance
and com m unication netw ork. The Adm inistrator can m odify the
com m unication netw ork by adding or rem oving nodes, or by m odifying
the groups. The Adm inistrator decides for the functionality and login of all
the other operators.
The Login access system forces each operator to identify him self w ith the D C M before each operation.
Loop Integrity Control
The D C M allow s to check the loop
integrity by a very sophisticated system based
on the reconstruction of the nodes cabling
physical sequence.
B y an autom atic procedure, the D C M creates
the physical list for each com m unication loop;
the cabling sequence of the nodes is
independent of the M O D B U S m ap and
of the organisation of the groups.
O nce the sequence is defined, the continuity
control is m anaged by the nodes placed on the
loop extrem ity inside the D C M station. It is thus
possible to have a control independently by the
D C M .
W hen com m unication is interrupted, w hether
by a cut cable, ground connection or short
circuit betw een bus cables, the D C M operates
the netw ork term inators as closest as possible
to the fault origin and creates a connection
betw een all the still com m unicating nodes.
Maintenance, operation and
setting tools
A softw are for rem ote PC is available on
request for m aintenance, operation and setting
purposes w ith user-friendly graphic pages.

N o rm a l m o d e The D C S is connected to lines A or B ;
Station M is active and com m unicates w ith the field;
Station S does not interrogate the field;
Station S m aintains its im age of the field updated;
S verifies the correct operation of M .
M and S, together w ith the field units, continuously verify the loop integrity.
B u s I n te rru p te d M cannot com m unicate w ith all the field units therefore its im age of the field is no longer com plete;
the field units isolate the interrupted portion of the line and recover a correct term ination of the loop;
M can resum e a correct com m unication w ith all the nodes, updating once again its im age of the field;
M still rem ains the only unit that exchanges data w ith the D C S.
M o u t o f se rvic e Station S, that controls the correct operation of M , determ ines that M is out of service due to one
of the follow ing causes:
- com m unication errors
- non consistent data
- an explicit m essage from M .
W hen S takes control:
- it sw itches lines A and B onto itself
- it sw itches the line for the external term inal
- it turns on a local indication
- it deactivates M .
The D C S recognises that S is active from the internal registers of the D C M
R e sto ra tio n o f M the control returns to M only after an explicit consent:
- from the D C S upon w riting an appropriate register
- from the local interface through a com m and in an appropriate m enu
After receiving the consent, S verifies the good condition of M ;
if necessary, S reloads the configuration into M and w aits that M is ready to w ork;
S returns the control to M and goes back to stand-by m ode
L in e s A e B both lines are sim ultaneously active so the D C S can use indifferently either one;
the station that is currently active (M or S) w ill reply on the sam e line;
each station (M or S) signals any fault of its ow n serial lines A and B via LED s.

4. Master (M) and Slave (S) stations in hot back up with a redundant bus on various loops
The netw ork can com prise various loops as
long as the m axim um num ber of nodes (250)
is not exceeded.
The principle of operation is identical to the
previous case, therefore M and S w ork in the
sam e w ay.
In this case the D C M is equipped w ith
O utput M odules that allow the system to
w ork w ith a m ultiple loop structure.
