GUNS

AUTHORIZED BY THE CANDIDATE AND PAID FOR BY CUTLER FOR MAINE

I respect and honor all constitutional rights, including the right to bear arms under the Second
Amendment. Maine has a long history of responsible gun ownership and one of the lowest rates of
gun-related crime in America.
I am the only candidate for governor who supports a requirement for truly universal criminal back-
ground checks upon the sale and transfer of rearms, including those sold at gun shows or by private
citizens. I would continue the current exemption for transfers between immediate family members.
I support the Manchin-Toomey bill in the U.S. Senate, which is supported by Senators Angus King and
Susan Collins, and a similar version in the House that is co-sponsored by Representative Chellie
Pingree. (Congressman Michaud has not co-sponsored the House bill.)
I also supported LD 1240, the "Act To Promote the Safe Use and Sale of Firearms, passed by the
Maine Legislature last year, but vetoed by Paul LePage. LD 1240 would have required rearm safety
courses, increased the minimum age to hold a concealed weapon permit, required background checks
for private sales, and begun to address access to rearms by those both mentally ill and a danger to
themselves or others.
Requiring universal background checks for gun sales and educating gun owners on the safe use and
storing of guns would save lives. The presence of a gun in domestic violence situations increases by
500 percent the risk that women will be victims of homicide. Moreover, in states that require a
background check for every handgun sale, there are 38 percent fewer women shot to death by
intimate partners.
I do not accept campaign contributions from any special interest Political Action Committee (PAC),
including the National Rie Association (NRA) PAC and other corporate gun lobby PACs.
I strongly support better rearms safety education.
We need to focus more attention on the problem of access to rearms by people who simply
shouldnt own guns, like convicted criminals and people suffering from mental illness who are a
danger to themselves or others.
Eliot Cutlers Record:

Mike Michauds Record:

Mr. Michaud has taken more than $40,000 in campaign checks and in-kind contributions from
the NRA and the corporate gun lobby during his years in the U.S. House of Representatives, and
he has received a 91% approval rating from the NRA for his House voting record.
[He] has a stellar rating from the NRA. (Kennebec Journal, 6/15/2013)

House version of the Manchin-Toomey universal background check bill.
