Standard Specification for
Carbon Structural Steel'
1. Scope
1 1 This speclficauonz covers carbon steel shapes, plates,
and bars of structural quahty for use m riveted, bolted, or
welded construmon of hndges and hmldmgs. and for general
structural purposes
1 2 Supplementary requuements are prov~ded for use where
addu~onal testlng or addlbonal restricuons are requ~red by the
purchaser. Such requmments apply only when specified m the
- - ~
purchasc order
1 3 When the steel 1s to be welded, a welding procedure
smtable for the grade of steel and intended use or service is to
he uuhzed See Appenhx X3 of Speclficauon A 61A 6M for
informauon on weldabd~ty.
1 4 For Group 4 and 5 wtde flange shapes for use tn tension,
~t 1s mommended that the purchase1 cons~der spec~fymg
supplementary requuements, such as fine austentuc gram size
and L%arpy V-Notch Impact testlng
1 5 The values slated m ellher in~h-pound uruls or SI unlls
are to be regarded separately as standard. With~n the text, the
SI unlts are shown In brackets The values stated ~n each
system are not exact equtvalents, therefore, each system 1sto
be uscd mdcpcndcntly of thc other, w~thout combmmg values
m any way
1.6 The text of t h~s specificauon contams notes or footnotes,
or both, that prov~de explanatory matenal Such notes and
foomotes, excludmg those in tables and figures, do not contam
any mandatory requuements
1 7 For plates cut from coded ptoduct, the addnional
requuements, mcludmg addmonal tesung requuements and the
reponmg of addmonal test rea~lts, of A 61A 6M apply.
