The teacher will then hold up each of the letters for the students to see.
2. Demonstrate knowledge or skill: (5n6ut7$odelin! by t%e teac%er) Time: 1 minute
Students will each be given a set of letters containing I, F, S, T, and R.
Before making words the students will be asked to hold up each of the letters, name it, and say
its common sound. Students will be asked to do both lowercase and capital letters.
The students will be asked to make a variety of words with letters I have provided for them. (is,
if, it, sit, fit, fits, fist, string, sing, sting, and ring). I will model the first word for them. Take 2
letters and make is. Mrs. Scott is happy. I will think aloud and say Now what 2 letters make is?
Oh thats right I need an I and an S to make is. Then place the letters in front of me. Ask the
students to do the same.
. Provide g!ided practice: (Guided 6ractice 1it% t%e teac%er) Time:2 minutes
1.)Tell the students to take away the s and add a different letter to make if. I will come if I can.
As the students are working I will model these along with the students as they work. Once
students are close to being done with this task ask one student how to spell the new word
(this question will be asked after each new word).
2.) Take away the f and add a different letter to make in. We were in the library.

Continue with instructions on changing the words and have the students create the correct word
without the teacher demonstrating.
4.) Take away the n and add another letter to spell it. It will be a great day.
5.) Add a letter to it and you can spell sit. Lets sit on the rug.
6.) Take away the s and add a letter to spell fit. Try on the shoes to see if they fit.
7.) Add a letter to spell fits. This shoe fits fine.
8.) Now lets do the move around trick with fits to spell fist. I can make a fist with my hand.

Now lets take some of the words we have made today and see if we can rhyme. Have each
student give a rhyming word to one of the words that was created during the lesson before
dismissing them back to their table spot.
+. Plans %or di%%erentiation:
- Students will be at the same reading level but will need to be encouraged to participate and do
the work themselves rather than relaying on their classmates.
- Give each student a turn to share out how to spell the word. Encourage students to make
changes if they have misspelled the word.
- If students are struggling with creating the new words. Talk them through it. Sound the word
out to hear each letter. If needed use the teacher set of letters to spell the word out with the
students. Use think aloud here to help the students solve the word, now what letter would make
that sound?
