Introduction
In 1994, Te Mountain Astrologer published an ar-
ticle Id written about the astrology of meeting and
marrying my husband. Among other things, the
article mentioned that I had foreseen marriage in
my chart well before I became romantically involved
with my future spouse. Soon after publication, I was
inundated with letters and phone calls from people
(okay, women) who had read the article, clamoring,
Do it for me!
I tried my best, but I must admit that I was, to a
dismaying degree, winging it. I was relatively new
to professional astrology, and Id had good training
but not much experience. In fact, my main quali-
cation as an expert in this subject seemed to be that
Id actually managed to get married.
Not that I hadnt had my successes with prediction.
Te rst time I met my husband, when he came to
me for a reading in late 1991, I told him, Youve
just met someone, and youll be married within two
years. Te accuracy of my prediction (we were mar-
ried in 1993) is doubly impressive since I was work-
ing with a chart calculated for the wrong time zone.

Other clients have gotten in touch over the years to
report that everything had worked out just as Id
predicted. But being a glass is half empty (and oc-
casionally, a time zone is completely wrong) kind
of girl, I couldnt help but wonder about the clients
who never followed up. Had they found the love
they were looking for?
As the years went on, I fell into electional astrol-
ogy specically, working with couples to choose
auspicious wedding dates. I enjoyed the work, and it
was a relatively undemanding way to practice astrol-
ogy while I nished my long-delayed college degree.
Eventually, this work made up a good two-thirds of
my practice. Ten in 2008, my book about marriage
and astrology, Star Guide to Weddings, was published.
And so, I seemed to have become a wedding astrolo-
ger. And yet I still didnt feel completely condent
answering the question, When will I get married?
So, I decided to conduct an informal study. Te
focus was simple. I didnt ask the participants why
they got married, whether the marriage lasted or
was happy, or even whether it was the rst, second,
or any other number of marriage. I only wanted to

know one thing: Which astrological factors seem
most likely to get you to the altar?
But before we get to that, I think its important to
take a couple of quick detours, beginning with a
non-astrological one.
Lies, Damn Lies And Statistics
If youre not married and youd like to be, I have
good news for you: Statistically, you are extremely
likely to marry at least once. According to the U.S.
Census Bureau, 9 out of 10 people marry at least
once. Tis includes 14% who marry after the age of
34. Forget about the Time magazine article about
women over 35 having a better chance of being hit
by pieces of Sky Lab than of getting married!
Its true that were getting married older. Te medi-
an age at the time of rst marriage has been steadily
rising since 1949. In 1975, the median age for a
man getting married was 23.5, and for a woman it
was 21.1. As of 2006, the median age at the time of
rst marriage was age 27.1 for men and age 25.8 for
women.

When Will I Get Married?
8
So if you are, or the client who is asking you When
will I get married is a woman in her early to mid-
twenties, chances are good the answer is, Soon.
I dont mean to be glib in saying that, either. I just
think its way too easy to forget that astrology works
in a larger context. A person can have the most
amazing signatures for marriage, but if shes a ten
year old in California in 2012, shes unlikely to be
marrying soon no matter how many promising
transits and progressions you see!

Marriage and the Birth Chart
Astrologers are fond of saying that if you dont see
something in the natal chart, youll never nd it
in the transits and progressions. I guess thats fair
enough. Notice, however, that the name of this
booklet is When will I get married? and not Will I
get married? Ive actually had clients say something
like, An astrologer once told me Ill never be mar-
ried. Can this be seen in the birth chart? Maybe
its because I was raised at a time and in a society in
which so much of our destiny is of our own choos-
ing, but I nd it dicult to believe that the birth
chart says absolutely not to much of anything.
Rob Hand once said something in an interview
about this, something like, Its ridiculous to point
to something like Saturn in the 7
th
house and pro-
nounce that a person will never marry. Instead, you
need to look at the chart in terms of what the person
needs to do in order to get married, or what kind of
marriage he or she is likely to have.

Tat sums up my own thinking pretty well, and
I must say that Im delighted to have my point of
view validated by Rob Hand!
So, I dont think a persons birth chart rules out or
guarantees marriage. I do think, though, that any
astrological examination of marriage must begin
there to nd out what kind of marriage youre
looking for, the kind of partner who will help you
nd it, and how you can best prepare yourself for
both.
The Marriage Myth
It was Dana Gerhardt who introduced me to the
idea of the marriage myth the story of our
parents union that gets told and retold throughout
our lives by word and example and shows us what
marriage is supposed to be. Usually were not
consciously aware of this myth, though we might
resolve not to make the same mistakes our parents
made, or not to marry a man like dad/woman like
mom. Often its not until we have been married for
years that we realize weve done exactly that.

When Will I Get Married?
11
When I began studying astrology, I imagined that
sexy Venus and passionate Mars held the secrets to
understanding love. After all, most youthful dreams
of future soulmates feature torrid tangos of passion
and enthrallment. Te notion of ending up in a
relationship like mom and dads so little kissing,
so much bill-paying! tends to ll idealistic young
hearts with horror. And yet more often than not,
when we nally settle down into a committed part-
nership, we nd ourselves reenacting much of what
we saw our parents doing in their relationship!
Decades later, a career spent studying the astrology
of relationships (not to mention a couple of decades
of marriage!) has taught me that there are really two
distinct narratives that underscore every marriage
myth. One, driven by the passionate eroticism of
sexual chemistry, certainly does seem to be reected
in the astrology of Venus and Mars. But the other a
quieter tale of compatible temperaments and united
purpose seems better illustrated by the astrological
connection between the Sun and Moon.

The Sun and Moon: Dance of Lights
Of course, there is no one-size-ts-all denition of
an ideal partnership. Some couples thrive on fric-
tion, while others crave ease. Some like to irt, oth-
ers prefer to ght. Te lunar phase at your birth,
representing the relationship between the Sun
(masculine) and the Moon (feminine), describes the
partnership style that comes naturally to you.
Te rapport between the Sun and Moon in your
birth chart is a dance of the lights, illuminating the
personal relationship fairy tale that lives in your sub-
conscious, a story drawn from observing your par-
ents, reading books, and absorbing messages from
television shows and movies. Understanding the
lunar phase at your birth can help you understand
why you keep having the same kind of relationships
again and again and how to make relationship
choices that are truly satisfying.

The Natal Lunar Phase
Finding the moons current phase is easy: Just look
up in the sky! Locating the lunar phase at the time
of your birth, however, is a little more complicated.
Fortunately, many computerized birth charts in-
clude your natal lunar phase. (If youd like to access
a free online resource to get this information, follow
the instructions at the end of this booklet.)
If you have a copy of your birth chart but it doesnt
show your natal lunar phase, heres a relatively easy
way to nd it. First, nd the sign opposite your Sun
sign. If the Moon lies between your Sun and the
same degree of its opposite sign, then you were born
between the New Moon and Full Moon. Other-
wise, you were born between the Full Moon and
the New Moon. Combine this information with the
natal aspect (if any) between your Sun and Moon
to nd your natal Lunar Phase in the table below.
For example, if you were born between the New and
Full Moons and there is a trine aspect between the
Sun and Moon in your birth chart, you were born
during the First Quarter Moon.

New Moon (Moon 0 degrees
ahead of the Sun)
Born at the New Moon, your ideal relationship is
one in which each partner is completely in the oth-
ers corner in which each supports the others goals
unconditionally and will move heaven and earth
to see that they are reached. If the Sun and Moon
are 30-45 degrees apart or in dierent signs, your
interests and temperaments will probably be quite
dierent; but you still need to feel that you and your
partner are one anothers greatest boosters.
Boasting one of Hollywoods most enduring mar-
riages (to actress Joanne Woodward), actor Paul
Newman was born at the New Moon. Joanne has
always given me unconditional support in all my
choices and endeavors, Newman was quoted as say-
ing, and that includes my race car driving, which
she deplores. To me, thats love. (1) Likewise, First
Lady Nancy Reagan, born just after a New Moon

in Cancer, was ercely protective of her husband,
President Ronald Reagan, both during his political
career and during his long illness from Alzheimers
disease.
If you were born at the New Moon, you will need
to guard against the extremes of co-dependency in
relationships, or avoiding relationships altogether!
What you seek is the elusive, happy medium: a re-
lationship in which each person is whole and inde-
pendent, yet completely devoted to (and respectful
of ) the other.
Crescent Moon (Moon 45 degrees
ahead of the Sun)
Born at the Crescent Moon, relationships feel most
natural to you when theyre challenging and stimu-
lating. If your Sun and Moon are close to the 45 de-
gree semi-square that begins this phase, the friction
of living alongside another person like the irritant
that stimulates a mollusk to produce a pearl forces
you to strive for achievement and self-improvement.
If you were born near the waxing sextile (60 de-
grees), you like relationships with those who are

enough like you in temperament to feel comfortable
but just dierent enough to keep you interested.
Both types of Crescent Moon phase people seem to
thrive on togetherness. Chef Julia Child, born at the
waxing semi-square, was described as being deter-
mined to maintain, that lovely intertwining of life,
mind, and soul that a good marriage is. We are a
team, she often said. We do everything together.
(2)
Paul McCartney, born at the waxing sexile, had a
long and famously close relationship with his wife,
Linda. As McCartney told PEOPLE magazine,
Te only 11 days we ever did not spend the night
together was when I got put in jail in Japan for pot.
Tats quite amazing. (3)
First Quarter Moon (Moon 90 degrees
ahead of the Sun)
Born at the First Quarter Moon, youre directed,
action-oriented, and at your best with a partner who
approaches life in the same way. If you were born
close to the waxing Sun-Moon square (90 degree),
you gravitate to partners who are temperamentally

quite dierent from you, or who move at a dier-
ent pace. Te resulting friction provides a powerful
catalyst for achievement (and sometimes for argu-
ments). Elizabeth Edwards, late wife of former U.S.
Vice Presidential hopeful John Edwards, was born at
the waxing square. A woman of formidable intellect
and determination, she was a trusted political advi-
sor to her husband perhaps because, She doesnt
agree with her husband on every single issue. She
doesnt hesitate to say so publicly. And she doesnt
walk away from a ght. (4)
If you were born near the waxing Sun-Moon trine
(120 degrees), you prefer a partner who is as dynamic
as you are and who moves at your speed. Youll dash
through life together as though it were a relay race,
passing the baton to each other and spurring each
other on to great achievement. Bandleader and tele-
vision pioneer Desi Arnaz was born with a waxing
Sun/Moon trine, and while their marriage had its
problems, his business partnership with wife Lucille
Ball changed the face of television.

Gibbous Moon (Moon 135 degrees
ahead of Sun)
Tose born during the Gibbous Moon phase dont
expect relationships to be easy. If your Sun and
Moon are close to the 135 degree sesqui-square as-
pect, then one of the most important relationship
lessons youll learn is how to recognize the moment
when persisting with a dicult relationship has
become the equivalent of ogging a dead horse. If
youre born with the Sun and Moon close to the 150
degree quincunx, compromise and adjustment pres-
ent critical challenges in your relationships. Prince
Charles, born at the waxing Sun-Moon quincunx,
reportedly married Princess Diana as a compromise.
He had reached marrying age, and her background
and appearance made her an appropriate choice. (5)
But the temperaments of a middle-aged man and a
bride just out of her teens were ultimately too dier-
ent to make the marriage a success.
Eventually the Prince was free to marry his old ame
Camilla Parker-Bowles. Even then, however, com-
promises and adjustments had to be made. Upon
the death of Pope John Paul II, their ceremony

had to be rescheduled to avoid a conict with the
funeral. Te grooms parents did not attend the
civil ceremony, possibly because of the sensitivity of
the Queens position as Supreme Governor of the
Church of England. (6) And the bride has chosen
to be addressed as Duchess of Cornwall rather than
Princess of Wales, a title closely associated with
the Princes rst wife.
Full Moon (Moon 180 ahead of the Sun)
If you were born during the Full Moon phase, re-
lationships are more than important to you: theyre
an essential part of how you learn about yourself.
Your desire to nd balance in all relationships can
propel you with varying degrees of success into
partnerships with those of opposite temperament, or
who seem like surprising choices of the odd couple
variety.
If you were born with the Sun and Moon in op-
position, remember that while opposites attract and
can certainly be complementary, its important that
you surround yourself with close partners whose
best traits reinforce your own. If youre born with

the sun/Moon quincunx during this phase, you may
feel wary of, or even trapped in relationships, espe-
cially when youre young.
For some Full Moon phase people, there may be a
sense of being onstage in your relationships, of
playing a role; in the case of entertainers, this is
sometimes literally the case. Roseanne Barr, born
during the Full Moon phase, parlayed her real life
as a housewife into a stand-up comedy routine and
enormously popular 1980s television series. Te
marriage didnt last, but her role as a Domestic
Goddess did!
Full Moon people may also serve as a sort of mir-
ror that reects the true nature or condition of their
partner, or even of their partners family. Diana,
Princess of Wales, was also born at the Full Moon.
In her marriage to Prince Charles, Diana performed
the role of Princess to near perfection, looking the
part at state occasions and producing two sons an
heir and a spare to the throne. But she claimed she
was hurt by her husbands indelity, (7) and when
neglected, a Full Moon person can turn rebellious.

turned into a public relations nightmare for the
royal family. Even her untimely death compelled
Buckingham Palace to defend itself against public
disapproval over its handling of the situation. (8)
Disseminating (Moon 225 degrees
ahead of/135 degrees behind the Sun)
Te Disseminating phase symbolizes the urge to
spread ones words and ideas far and wide, and that
can cause problems in conventional relationships.
In fact, for some like many-partnered Warren
Beatty, born at the waning sesqui-square this can
be a Goldilocks and the Tree Bears lunar phase,
as you cycle through a succession of partners who
seem promising but end up being not quite right. Of
course, the aws or weaknesses we perceive in our
partners usually reveal more about us than about
them.
If you were born close to the waning trine, you may
nd it easier to eventually settle down in a con-
tented, comfortable partnership sometimes (like
much-married actress Elizabeth Taylor) more than
one! For some born with this aspect, simply nding

a partner can feel a bit like the relief of putting salve
on an itchy rash. But if youve come to terms with
your own questing nature and chosen wisely, it can
also be the relief of discovering the right partner
one who nds the world as fascinating as you do,
and wants to spend life exploring it with you.
Last Quarter Moon (Moon 270 degrees
ahead of/90 degrees behind the Sun)
Born at the Last Quarter phase, you need a part-
ner who supports your enormous ambition and can
oer understanding, patience, and practical skills
to help you. Yours is a restless, driven soul, and it
takes the right kind of person to live comfortably
with someone who is always somewhat dissatised
with the status quo. Eleanor Roosevelt, born at the
waning square (90 degrees), is best remembered as
the formidable wife of one of Americas greatest
presidents. In her own right, however, she was an
independent and politically-adept author, speaker,
and crusader for human and civil rights.
Born closer to the Sun/Moon sextile (60 degrees),
there is a greater emphasis on conversation, ideas,

and friendship with your partner. You seek, above
all, a partner who can make you laugh and who
gets you. Oscar-winner Meryl Streep, born close
to a waning sextile, has been happily married to
sculptor Don Gummer since 1978. Of her mar-
riage, she has said, My husband understands the
compulsion to create things. With somebody who
had a regular job, I think it might have been harder
to translate those creative impulses and the need to
satisfy them .... (9)
Balsamic Phase (Moon 315 degrees
ahead of/45 degrees behind the Sun)
Te Balsamic Lunar phase is the Moons dark time,
and is symbolic of our need for rest and our connec-
tion to the psychic and spiritual realms. For those
born during the Balsamic Phase, relationships may
feel karmically charged; a series of relationships,
or even just one that is characterized by emotional
drama and artistic expression, may be a way of ty-
ing up karmic loose ends. And because the Balsamic
Phase can be connected to illness, health issues may
also play an important role in your relationships.

Painter Frida Kahlo was born during the Balsamic
phase. Chronic pain and other health problems were
a motif that ran throughout her life and art. She
married painter Diego Rivera twice in passion-
ate but tumultuous unions marked by both partners
unfaithfulness. Yet Kahlo and Rivera also inspired
and supported one another, producing some of their
most acclaimed works while together.
Born at the waning semi-sextile, Betty Ford enjoyed
a long and generally happy marriage to President
Gerald Ford. Along the way, however, she suered
a nervous breakdown (I was giving too much of
myself and not taking any time out for Betty ...)
(10), an addiction to pills and alcohol, and a highly
public struggle with breast cancer. Shes perhaps
best remembered for her frank public revelations,
supported by her husband, about her recovery from
addiction, which prompted her to co-found the
famous Betty Ford Center for alcohol and drug re-
habilitation.

Venus and Mars
So, thats the Sun and Moon as mom and dad.
Tats the side of their relationship you probably saw
most often.
Venus and Mars are the symbols of erotic passion
in relationship. Tats a side of marriage that is not
usually patterned as explicitly as the Sun/Moon side.
Ask most people if they can imagine their parents
dating or (God forbid) having sex, and the response
is usually something like, Ewwwwww!
Venus and Mars symbolize the masculine and femi-
nine in their red-hot-lovers costumes. Tey show
what you want and what youre willing to do to get
it how easy or dicult it is for you to fulll your
desires. Venus and Mars symbolize the chemistry
that brings you together in the rst place and that,
hopefully, continue to give your relationship pop
and zz throughout your marriage. After all, theres
nothing sadder than a married couple who are all
mom-and-dad with no re or pizzazz between them;
theyre all Sun/Moon, no Venus/Mars.

On the other hand, theres nothing more tedious
than a couple that is obsessed with interpersonal
drama and intrigue, messing around on each other,
playing games. If your Venus/Mars passion is not
suciently grounded in the Sun and Moons basic
compatibility, your relationship can zzle into an
exhausting, Cant live with em, cant live without
em scenario.
If Venus and Mars are in good aspect to each other
in your birth chart or at the very least, in signs
of complementary element youll tend to believe
in passion based on mutual interests and tempera-
ment. If they are in scratchy aspect to each other,
youre somewhat more likely to expect a battle of
the sexes in your romantic relationships. On the
plus side, you and your partner are unlikely to drift
into comfortable indierence to one another!
If Venus and Mars are in good aspect to each other,
but in conict with the Sun and Moon, youre
likely to be carrying around a vision of marriage as
a zero sum game between compatibility and excite-
ment. Either you get along comfortably day to day,
or you get to have red-hot sex for the duration of

The First and Seventh Houses
Another gateway to understanding your natal charts
relationship messages is the symbolism of the rst
and seventh houses (self and other) of your chart.
Te Ascendant, or rst-house cusp, symbolizes your
personality, the collection of coping mechanisms
youve devised for dealing with the world. On the
opposite side of the horoscopic wheel, the seventh
house is the mirror image of your carefully-crafted,
rst house persona.
One interpretation of the seventh house and the De-
scendant (the seventh house cusp) is that it describes
the person you will marry. Tats certainly valid.
But another way of interpreting the seventh house
is that it describes the qualities that can make you a
more balanced person. If you identify with your As-
cendant qualities exclusively, youre likely to attract
people with the opposite qualities with varying
degrees of satisfaction. Its better to cultivate your
seventh-house traits yourself instead of outsourcing
them to your partner!
Interestingly, the Descendant seems to describe
the way you are perceived by the people closest to

you. Remember, the Descendant is the Ascendant
of your relationship house. It describes the way you
approach and present yourself in relationships with
close partners (and open enemies, also associated
with the seventh house) and thats often very dif-
ferent from the face you show the rest of the world.
Planets in the Seventh House
Te edgling astrology student, looking for mar-
riage in their chart, gazes in dismay on her empty,
barren seventh house. No planets there! Does that
mean shell never marry?
Hardly. Everyones got a Sun and Moon, and Venus
and Mars, and planets ruling the 7
th
house; those tell
the story of marriage very well. But those of us born
with planets in the seventh house do have some very
specic homework to sort out, I think, before we can
mingle our fates with those of another person. As-
pects from these planets to other planets in the chart
especially the Sun and Moon, Venus and Mars,
and the Ascendant ll in more colorful detail.
Remember that the marriage myth is mostly un-
conscious. Its based on what we perceived about our

parents marriage which is based on what they let
us see, not necessarily the entirety of their relation-

consciously choose a relationship that sidesteps its
negative qualities while retaining its positive ones.

Why Arent I Married?
When I was in my late 20s, I was so doggone ready
to be married that I couldnt imagine being any
readier! As it happened, I married two months be-
fore my 32
nd
birthday twice my mothers age on
her wedding day.
Tat probably wasnt a coincidence. My mom loved
my dad, but she felt she had married far too young
and didnt want her daughters to make the same
mistake. When we were young and mused about
when we might marry, she used to say, When
youre 30, well talk about it.
Right on schedule, I met my future husband the
year I turned 30.
What is it that holds us back from marriage? Obvi-
ously, not having met the right person yet will slow
you down! But I have this theory that deep inside
each of us is a little voice very much like my moth-
ers, a voice that tells us what we need to do to be
ready for marriage (even if its something as simple
as turning 30). Its a wise voice that tries to protect
us from poor decisions by putting us in a kind of
psychological playpen until were ready to play with
the big kids without getting hurt.

Its frustrating to spend time in a playpen. Tink
how a child yells after being cooped up in one for
awhile! But the point of the exercise is not punish-
ment, but safety. In your birth chart, you have a wise
parent Saturn and a sturdy playpen: the house
Saturn occupies in your horoscope.
If youre not married and you want to be, I dont
think its because your chart is hopeless for mar-
riage. I dont think its because you secretly dont
want to be happy, or that youre too picky, or that all
the good men or women are already taken.
I think its because you dont feel quite safe enough
yet to risk it.
Marriage is extremely risky. It makes both partners
utterly vulnerable to one another, quite interde-
pendent, and responsible to a sobering degree for
many of one anothers choices and actions. Tere is
a reason the language of marriage ceremonies is so
serious. Its a very, very big deal to stand up in front
of your family, friends, and community and basi-
cally co-sign on another persons life. And marriage
requires you to take on another persons stuff. Its no
longer just a matter of dealing with your own inse-

curities, weaknesses, ambitions, and faults; you are
also directly impacted by another persons insecuri-
ties, weaknesses, ambitions, and faults.
So it takes awhile for some of us to get to the point
where we feel safe enough and condent enough to
do this. Until then, Saturn describes the ways you
protect yourself against bad relationship choices,
and the nature of the barriers you erect to keep your-
self safe. If you look at the things that appear to be
holding you back from marriage, they are probably
of the nature of Saturns sign and house placement
in your chart.
Saturn Passages
Fortunately, if we keep plugging away and work-
ing hard, Saturn tends to reward us as we age. We
gradually develop the qualities we need to be a true
success in this area of life. All the dicult lessons
of Saturn have been leading you as Saturn lessons
always do to a very positive, self-actualized place.
Teyve been leading you to a point where you abso-
lutely dont need anyone else to validate you, because
youve learned to believe in yourself.

Once we pass the initiation of Saturns return to its
position in our birth chart the Saturn return,
which happens for everyone around age 28 or 29
were more or less acquainted with Saturn. Its not
that weve completely mastered his lessons; thats not
how Saturn works. But weve become familiar with
his curriculum.
By the time you get married, you should have the
sense that youve made some substantial progress in
this curriculum, that youve gotten some units un-
der your belt and are ready for the upper-divisional
courses. If you want to know if someone is ready for
marriage, ask him or her about the areas of their life
represented by Saturn. How are they doing there?
My Saturn in the second house playpen was a se-
cure, highly paid, and deadly dull secretarial job at
a government agency. In August 1991, I left that
playpen for good. Ten, three days later, I did the
one thing my mother the voice of Saturn in Capri-
corn, Chronos, the God of time told me I must do
before I could marry: I turned thirty.
In a little under two years, I was married.

Predicting Marriage in Your Chart
As the marriage myth shows, there are a number
of unconscious messages and issues about relation-
ship that need to be sorted through before were
ready for marriage. But of course, being ready to
get married doesnt mean youve worked everything
out. It just means youre ready to move up into the
big leagues of relationship the arena in which
you must collaborate with another person to work
through your respective marriage myths and form a
new one all your own.
Tere are, I believe, no foolproof formulas for nd-
ing marriage in your chart with astrology, just as
there is no foolproof formula to calculate whether
youre ready to get married. Tere seems to be a pat-
tern, though, of various mythic symbols converging
in a meaningful way in the natal chart, revealed
through transits and progressions, that can show
likely moments when youre ready to get in the ring.
So, how do you predict marriage in your chart? De-
termined to crack the code, I got to work. I ried
through my les, and placed a survey on website,
and collected to date about 150 charts. For each

chart, I ran numerous charts for the date of mar-
riage. And armed with a list of about 30 possible
factors, I set to work looking at every chart and not-
ing what I found, adapting my list along the way.
Im of the opinion that an event as life-changing
as marriage should be easy to nd in your chart.
You really shouldnt need to pull out the asteroids,
transneptunians, black holes, tertiary progressions,
biquintiles, or the vertex. Im not saying you cant
get good information from these, Im just saying
you should be able to nd marriage without them. If
you cant nd something as big as marriage with ten
planets and some major (and just a couple minor)
aspects, then what the heck use is astrology?
In astrology, we have ways of symbolically moving
your chart forward in time to reect your real-life
growth. Secondary Progressions are based on
planetary positions in the rst few months after your
birth and reect inner changes. Solar Arc Progres-
sions (or directions) are based on the movement of
the secondary progressed Sun and describe how you
react to inner changes. And transits, comparing the

current position of the planets to your birth chart,
describe your interactions with the outside world.
Heres what I found, beginning with the top ve
indicators. Te more Ive thought about these, and
what their signicance might be, the more Ive come
to the conclusion that each of them suggests a par-
ticular question that can be asked about your readi-
ness to marry. (Note: progressions refers to both
Secondary and Solar Arc Progressions.)
Top Five Marriage Signifcators
1. Te question: Are you ready to completely
change your life?
Te astrology: Major transits or progressions
to the 1st/7th or 4th/10th houses.
Marriage is a rite of passage almost as universal
as birth and death, and about as signicant. At
the time that you marry, we should expect to see
major planetary activity around what are called
the angles of your chart: the cusps of the 1st and
7th (self and others) and 4th and 10th (family and
society) houses. Tese aspects signal a fundamental

change in your lifes direction including, perhaps,
a change in marital status.
For men, its somewhat more likely to nd transits
and progressions associated with the 1st and 7th
house cusps. For women, the action is more likely to
involve the 4th and 10th house cusps. For women,
marriage traditionally represented an important
change of status (10th house), which also involved
leaving her family and home, even taking a new
family name (4th house). For men, marriage rep-
resented the exercise of individual will (1st house)
and the acquisition of a partner who could take on
specic, complementary responsibilities (7th house).
Tese days, in Western culture, equality is empha-
sized in marriage. Many couples are already living
together when they marry. Many women retain
their given name. Both partners expect equal give-
and-take with their spouse. But it seems that some-
where deep inside us, very old societal expectations
remain.
2. Te question: Are you ready to confront
your marriage myth?
Te astrology: Progressed Sun/Moon aspect

Te Sun and Moon represent the alchemy of mascu-
line and feminine and, as we saw in our discussion
of the marriage myth, symbolizes the messages
about marriage that were modeled by our parents. A
strong aspect between the progressed Sun and natal
Moon, solar arc Moon and natal Sun, even pro-
gressed Moon and natal or progressed Sun sym-
bolizes a convergence of male and female archetypes
in your life, and an opportunity to confront your
marriage myth.
3. Te question: Are you ready to fall madly
in love?
Te astrology: Progressed Venus/Mars aspect
If the Sun and Moon are Mom and Dad, Venus
and Mars represent something a little more primal:
carnal attraction and the drive to perpetuate the
species. Te question, Are you ready to fall madly
in love? may seem like a no-brainer. Who wouldnt
want to fall in love?
Wanting to fall in love, and being really available to
the experience, are two dierent things. Love can
and does appear at the most unlikely times and in
inconvenient circumstances. And of course, plenty

of people get married without being in love at all
or fall in love without getting married. A progressed
Venus/Mars aspect alone doesnt symbolize mar-
riage, but it does point to the electric, pulse-racing
chemistry that makes you really want to be with
another person.
When the time is right for marriage, youll very
likely nd a major aspect between Progressed Venus
and Progressed Mars; between Progressed or Solar
Arc Venus and natal Mars; or between Progressed or
Solar Arc Mars and natal Venus.
4. Te question: Can you break with the
past and pioneer a new future?
Te astrology: Progressed Sun in aspect to
Mars
I remember riding in a car with my husband-to-
be, not long after we decided to get married, and
marveling with him about how everything seemed
possible now that we were together. Its one of the
nicer facets of marriage, actually. Forming a bond
with another person, you feel invincible.

When the Sun, the evolving self, meets up with
decisive Mars, they symbolize willingness to break
with the past and move with condence in a new
direction. Its no wonder that in electional astrology,
the beginning of marriage is marked not by the start
of the wedding ceremony, but by the moment both
declare I do a very Martian proclamation!
5. Te question: Are you ready to play the role
of wife or husband?
Te astrology: Progressed Ascendant in Aspect
to the Sun, Moon, or Sun/Moon midpoint.
Te Ascendant of your birth chart refers to your
own individual set of personality traits and coping
mechanisms. Its the role youve chosen to play when
dealing with the world. When you marry, you sud-
denly step into a new role: husband or wife. Tese
are roles that come pre-loaded with centuries of
societal expectations, and the newly married couple
must evaluate these expectations and decide how to
incorporate them gracefully into their own person-
alities.

When Youre Ready
When will I get married? Survey says: When youre
ready. Based on my research, the transits and pro-
gressions described in this report point to the strong
possibility of marriage. But the question of whether
that means youre ready for marriage is quite dier-
ent and is unlikely to be answered by astrology
alone.
Its human to seek predictions of important events
in your life, such as marriage. Te entire point of
my survey was to prepare myself to oer these pre-
dictions to my clients, including you, with more
condence.

But I dont believe the future is some static event
thats waiting for us to catch up with it. I believe
that were in the process of creating it. Tat were in
the process, every day, of becoming ready for our fu-
ture, including marriage. Ask yourself how you can
ready yourself. What are the family dynamics that
created your marriage myth? What is the nature of
the vulnerabilities and blockages that are preventing
real intimacy with others?
Sometimes, simply becoming aware of our personal
relationship myths and patterns can be enough to
help us change course. Predicting planetary mo-

stones for tackling this work head-on and moving
forward along the path to meaningful and truly
intimate relationship.

For the study, charts were calculated using Koch
houses and tropical zodiac. Asteroids were not in-
cluded. Secondary progressed, solar arc, and outer-
planet transits (Jupiter Pluto) were calculated for
the wedding date. Major Ptolemaic aspects were
used and inconjunct and semi-square aspects were
included for progressions and solar arc directions.
Orbs used were 5 degrees for tr. Jupiter and Saturn,
3 degrees for slower-moving transits; 4 degrees for
progressions (Sun-Venus), 3 degrees for pr. Mars, 3
degrees for Solar Arc directions (Moon-Pluto). Orbs
used for minor aspects were 2 degrees.
