Self Evaluation Kim Hefty:

Curation Criteria to Assess Effective Curation

Mark Briggs, Journalism Next

Question Yes No
#1 Can you clearly find a specific goal for the content being curated? (Kantor,
2011)

Comments: (What is the goal/the objective? Is it clearly identified?)
My goal is clearly to explore what Common Core is and how it is being
implemented throughout the US. I present multiple sources as to what the
new standards are. I also present sources that are both pro and con
Common Core. The goal is for the reader to use all the resources to make
an informed decision whether they are for or against Common Core.

#2 Is there a specific topic identified? (Kantor, 2011)

Comments: (What is the main topic of focus?)
The primary focus of this curation is the exploration of the Common Core
Standards.

X
#3 Is the material organized successfully by content? (Cohen, 2012)

Comments: (Does it have a natural flow?)
The curation flows from defining Common Core to the presentation of pro
and con interchangeably.

X
#4 Does the curation provide a unique learning experience for the audience?
Was it engaging, eye catching and creative?(Rosenbaum, 2012)

Comments: (Explain the format of the learning piece. Does the piece
make others want to comment, be involved and participate?)

I believe that I selected a wide variety of materials such as articles, blogs,
a documentary, and op ed pieces. I believe my creativity was visible in
the topic and the specific layout of my curated materials.

#5 Were thoughts and guidance included within the curation to provide
understanding? Did the curator summarize, edit, comment and give
thoughts on the topic? (Weisgerber, 2012)

Comments: (Did the expert revise and annotate the material? Explain)

The commentaries provided did a good job of summarizing the material
presented and what category it fit into (defining or debate or pro vs con)
X
#6 Were resources carefully filtered with the specific goal or topic in
mind?(Stanic, 2013)

Comments:

All material was curated to give the reader an in depth exploration of the
Common Core Standards.
X
#7 Do the title and introduction to the curation clearly show what the curation
is about and why it is relevant to the audience?(Good, 2011)

Comments:

The title is supposed to be provocative and encourage the reader to take a
stance on the Common Core Standards.

X
#8 Were all resources fully explored and not just glanced over, to determine if
they truly deserve your recommendation?(Rosenbaum, 2012)

Comments: (Did you read through each resource in its entirety to ensure
that it fits your topic and goal, rather than just reading the title and posting.
If the full webpage, blog, video does not apply, did you include comments
to guide the audience toward the relevant portion?)

Yes, I believe I thoroughly and thoughtfully reviewed all the material
curated.

X
#9 Does the curation provide the audience with valuable network ties for
future learning?(Leigh, 2007)

Comments:

The curation does provide the reader with resources for further
information, especially the Parent Guides for Common Core.
X
#10 Is the content relevant to the audience? (Good, 2011)

Comments: (Who is the audience? Does the topic relate directly to the
X
chosen audience? Explain.)

The content should be extremely relevant to anyone affiliated or involved
in K-12 education.

#11 Does the curator provide his/her own insight to the topic? (DeMers, 2014)

Comments:

Yes, I provided insights to each of the curated articles or materials. I tried
to remain neutral and present all sides of the Common Core Debate.
X
#12 Does this collection promote participation? (Mihailidis, 2013)

Comments:

Yes, the collection encourages readers to decide for themselves which
side of the Common Core debate they are on.

X
#13 Is attribution provided for resources curated. (Cohen, 2012)

Comments:

Yes.
X
#14 Is there diversity of sources provided? (Mihailidis, 2013)

Comments:

Yes, there are a wide variety of resources provided.
X
#15 Is the curator sharing their piece successfully online? (Weisgerber, 2011)

Comments: (What public domain was used to post the piece? Facebook,
Twitter, Diigo, Google Reader, etc. Was it successful to inform that
specific audience?)

Yes, I posted this curation on ScoopIt, Facebook, and Twitter. I also used
Google Plus to share with my PLN.
