North & South

The industrial revolution had brought great changes in everyday life of people.
achines !ere invented and introduced !hich led to the transformation of the 1"th century
society.
#n the film North & South the changes are clearly depicted.
$s the consequence of the industrial revolution the middle class rise and the !or%ing
class appeared. &eople' !ho have !or%ed for landlords' sa! a great opportunity in !or%ing in
cities. (rbanisation started around factories and !hole to!ns and cities !ere formed. This is
sho!n in the movie. The to!n of ilton is an industrialisation center !ith different social
classes' factories and !ith everything that came !ith urbanisation.
The most prominent consequence of the industrial revolution is the huge gap bet!een
the !or%ing class and middle class. )hile middle class factory o!ners and their families lived
under very good circumstances' ordinary !or%ing people lived in misery. #n !or%er families
even the little children had to !or% for ma%e their living. *hild labour !as not unusual at this
time and employers did not care about the children +rs. Thornton said to a !oman !hose
daughter !as ill' if the !oman has another daughter she can !or% in the factory).
There is a very effective part in the film !hen iss ,ale spea%s !ith the ,iggins-s
about the six starving children in the neighborhood the scene changes to the Thornton-s house
and a laid table. (pper class en.oyed life and had dinner partys not careing about people
belo! their status +!ho !ere starving and malnutritioned).
&eople got sic% easily. )or%ing conditions !ere very poor and most of the factory
o!ners did not care about the health of their employees +and even if they care it !as only
because to maximi/e the profit).
#n spite of this medical service !as not available for everyone. iddle class families had
enough money to call the doctor !hen someone fell ill but !or%ing class families had not.
+0nough to thin% about the condition of 1essy ,iggins.)
,ousing !as quite different bet!een the classes. )hile !or%ing class people lived in
small' dar%' often !ood2made houses and shac%s' middle class families lived in big mansions
full of light and comfort.
)e can say from the above !ritten that the social consequences of the industrial
revolution are !ell emphasi/ed in the movie. The problems of the !or%ing class and the
middle class-s deeds for profit are represented !ell.
