Lesson 6 Architecture and Design Vocabulary
Directions.- Read the concepts and underline verbs. Write a list of scientific approaches to
the meaning of design.
Design:
Realization of a concept or idea into a configuration, drawing, model, mold, pattern, plan or
specification (on which the actual or commercial production of an item is based) and which helps
achieve the items designated objective (s).
Design in technology expanded process:
The approach that engineering and some other disciplines use to specify how to create or do
something. A successful design must satisfy a functional specification; conforms to the limitations
the target medium; meets implicit or explicit requirements on performance and resource usage.
A design may also have to satisfy restrictions on the design process itself, such as its length or
cost, or the tools available for doing the design. In some applications design must follow the
specific requirements based on analysis and implementation.

Directions.- Use the bold verbs to write new statements and draw some sketches in your
notebook. Show your skills and imagination.
How could architecture be part of life? Does architecture matter in the way we live, interact,
experience the other? The present work searches answers to these old questions the place of
architectural space in human practice progressively, identifying three layers of space: first the
physical space of bodily action, the syntax of structures; second the semiotic space of typologies
in visual perception; third the semantic space as context to communication. Taking the form-
function dilemma as a starting point, it proposes a more complete picture of the pervasiveness of
space in our practices and experiences, seeing its role in (a) setting up conditions of
communication and expected behavior; (b) as a trigger to the awareness of situation contexts
minimizing risks of misunderstanding and ensuring the fluidity of interaction; (c) as an active
resource in the definition of contents of communication. The paper aims to describe
interpenetrations of space, language, and practice.

STATE OF THE ART: THE CONCEPT OF ARCHITECTURAL THEORY
This state of the art reviews the concept of theory from various disciplines and focuses mainly on
the concept of architectural theory. It explains how theory is born out of the thinking process
humans develop in front of reality. This process envelops the building of critical judgment helped
by historical reasoning. It also reviews theory related to architectural practice through history.
Considers how in architecture the idea of putting theory at the service of practical specificities has
become a constant according to the needs of "distant generations in time and space". Observes
though, in spite of some essays on the history of architectural history consider the bipolarity
between "idea and reality", saying theory and practice, it can be considered how theory has
always been present in the act of design and building, in the sense that theory explains and
gives foundation to design.

Lesson 10 Dialogue skills
Directions.- Practice this conversation with a partner. Ask your teacher for any new words.
Karl: Good Morning, John. I am Karl.
James: Good Morning.
Karl: How are you doing?
James: I am doing fine. Thank you.
Karl: How was the traffic coming over here?
James: I am so glad that the traffic was light this morning. No traffic jam and no accidents.
Karl: That is good. John, lets start the interview. First of all, let me properly introduce myself. I am
the Design Department Manager. As you know there is an open position in my department, and I
need to fill this position as soon as possible.
James: Please, tell me a little bit about the position.
Karl: It is an entry-level position. The new employee will have to work closely with the Structures
Department. He will also have to deal with the union on a daily basis.
James: What type of qualifications do you require?
Karl: I require a four-year college degree in Architecture, Engineering or similar. Some working
experience would be helpful.
James: What kind of experience are you looking for?
Karl: Doing office work is good. However, since this is an entry-level position, I do not require a lot
of experience. I am willing to train the new person.
James: That is great!
Karl: John, tell me a little bit about you.
James: I was a student at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa, and I just graduated with a
Bachelor degree in Architecture. I have been working part-time as a payroll clerk for the last two
years.

James: The job should help me see what Constfruction is all about. I have learned a lot of
structure, building and materials in theory at school, and now it is time for me to put them into
practice.
Karl: Anything else?
James: I also hope that it will help me grow in my field.
Karl: What are your strengths? Why should I hire you?
James: I am a hard-working person and a fast learner. I am very eager to learn, and I get along
fine with people.
Karl: OK. Now, let me ask you a few quick questions. You do not mind working long hours, do
you?
James: No, I do not.
Karl: Can you handle pressure?
James: Yes, I can. When I was going to school, I took quite a few courses each semester while
working at least twenty hours every week. And, I handled that situation very well.
Karl: Do you still have any questions for me?
James: No, I think I have a pretty good understanding of the job. I believe that I can handle it with
ease, and I hope to have the opportunity to work for you.
Karl: John, nice meeting you. Thank you for coming.
James: Nice meeting you too. Thank you for seeing me.
