Welcome
Shambhala Meditation Center of New York City
The Shambhala Meditation Center of New York is affiliated with a worldwide network of urban meditation
and rural retreat centers founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a lineage holder in the Nyingma, Kagyü and
Shambhala Buddhist traditions. Trungpa Rinpoche was renowned for his ability to present Buddhism in a form
readily understandable to Western students. His son and dharma heir, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, is the current
lineage holder of the Shambhala tradition. Located in Manhattan’s Chelsea district, our Center offers daily public
meditation, a core curriculum of Buddhist and Shambhala teachings, and a wide variety of programs on meditation
and contemplative arts. The Shambhala Center has been helping New Yorkers of all traditions discover their
inherent sanity, gentleness, and humor since 1971.

The Path of
Meditation
Meditation is based on the premise that the natural state of the mind
is calm and clear. We must first slow down and experience our mind
as it is. This has nothing to do with religion or a spiritual path. It has
everything to do with simply being human.
—Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche
Sitting meditation provides the foundation for all the practices and activities of the Shambhala Meditation Center.
Dating from the time of the Buddha, meditation reveals our inherent gentleness, fearlessness, and intelligence.
