ALL TOGETHER NOW 30th Annual AGM & Conference participants took a break to pose for a group shot.
By Cathy Hansen
This years conference was the 30th
AGM held by this association. We were for-
tunate to have the
Father of this Log
Building Association,
Allan Mackie, in atten-
dance. Personally, for me
it was an honour to have
Allan acknowledge our
work and share his
delight in the work the
staff and members are
doing to bring this association to where it
is today. It was great to see so many famil-
iar and new faces at this event. Newcomers
to our annual event shared their delight at
the networking and the sharing which tran-
spired throughout this gathering.
All events were well received and we
had many positive comments, along with
some constructive ideas for future confer-
ences. Thanks to all of you who took the
time to provide feedback at the confer-
ence. Our email and phone line are always
open for future comments as well togeth-
er we will grow wisely!
There were two pre-conference courses
prior to our main event. The Log Grading
Course was well attended and enjoyed,
with Ed Burke as the instructor. They had a
lot of fun, despite the freezing tempera-
tures. Once again, Frederic Brillant took
students to new levels in his French Scribe
Course, and with volunteer Willi Miks
ensuring they had heat and coffee, the stu-
dents survived winter in Quebec.
The Log Builders Competition on
Thursday afternoon saw an enthusiastic
group compete for the top prize. This year
Simon Auger of Qubec, stole the title.
Auger also walked away with a new chain-

saw and other prizes. All winning con-
testants were awarded belt buckles as
medallionsgold, silver and bronze
and additional prizes. Congratulations
to all those who competed this year
and took the challenge; we look for-
ward to seeing you back at the next
competition.
The schedule of events throughout
the weekend went well. There was
something for everyone, from history
to design, to marketing and hands-on
stair building and roof systems. This
year we offered an extra nights
accommodation with the package.
Evening events included an entertain-
ing presentation on Wood by Les
Josza, followed by the annual slide
show on Thursday evening.
Our Annual Auction took place on
Friday night, with John Boys winning
the main door prize draw of a 357XP
Husqvarna Chainsaw "We've been
giving away a chainsaw on auction
night as a door prize for the last few
years," says Ann Miks, ILBA
Administrative Assistant, "along with
several other door prizes just a
few more perks for members who
attend."
On Saturday we enjoyed Canadian
folk singer Valdy. It was great to see
so many families and children at this
years event; we look forward to
growing this concept.
For those who want to see what
they missed, a summary schedule is
available under conferences on our
Web site. Also, additional copies of
the Conference program book may
be purchased for $10CDN, each, plus
shipping from the ILBA office.Photos
are also available on our Web site at
www.logassociation.org, or Jerry
Rouleaus site at www.jrouleau.com.
Many thanks to Brian Lloyd and Jerry
Rouleau for all their photo taking!
We would like to thank all the
sponsors for their continued support
of our association and the log build-
ing industry. Thanks to those who
donate to our annual auction and to
those who donate by bidding on
those great items at our event!
Thanks to our members who attend-
ed this years event and thanks to our
presenters; it is all of you together
who make these annual events such a
success! And last, but not least, many,
many thanks to our volunteers who
provided endless hours of support to
the staff during the event Thanks

is a priority and a large part of the work load.
7. We are looking at funding sources.
8. We are setting up charitable status in both
the US and Canada.
9. We are a networking agency.
10. We educate the public, but the public
doesnt fund our work; ultimately the value
comes back to the membership.
11. The staff is here to serve you and we can
use your input.
12. Funding initiatives, it takes money to
make money and it is not just out of the
dues.
13. Weve been invited to participate in the
Logging Sports Program in Revelstoke this
summer.
14. We are soliciting new sponsors.
15. The LBN size has been doubled in publi-
cations; we need your suggestions and arti-
cles for the LBN.
Old business
DG Are there any requests?
Murray Arnott requested that we get a bal-
ance sheet with the financial report.
European tour has been postponed for
now due to the current political situations.
We were unable to make any commitments
with a sufficient lead-time. It has been post-
poned indefinitely. It is a lot of work with the
conference, Rendez-vous and the proposed
TFG cooperative meeting so this would need
to be fitted into the efforts.
New business
Log grading is being worked on.
Bylaws changes
1. Four bylaw changes are being proposed
(see proposed changes at the end of this arti-
cle).
2. Murray Arnott moved that we accept the
four changes as proposed. Motion passed
unanimously.
AGM MINUTES
Continued on page 8
#42 March/April 2003 8
Tim Bullock requested that the annual
financial statements be created and sent to
the membership earlier. DG suggested that
the information will be sent out with the
conference packets next year. JP made him-
self available to go over any and all of the
financial statement.
DG acknowledged Jerry Wait for his work
as the past president.
DG acknowledged the board for their
efforts and pointed out their diversity. The
board has been taking a far greater role for
the association.
Jerry Wait asked about the future location
of the Rendez-vous. RS mentioned that there
have been no fixed demands for new loca-
tions. The Cherryville site is still available for
the next gathering. It takes a local hero(s) to
carry the load for setting up a Rendez-vous.
We would like suggestions for future sites.
Next year the conference will be in the
Okanagan area of B.C. and we need your
suggestions.
Jean Steinbrecher noted that we need to
notify the B.C. Societies Commission in
Victoria retroactively when we hold our con-
ference outside of B.C. or we may lose our
status.
DG thanked Pierre Cousineau for his
support in assisting with the pre-conference
and conference courses.
DH asked that we acknowledge the office
staff.
Brian Lloyd was acknowledged as the rep-
resentative of the LBIBC. This organization
was organized at the AGM in Harrison Hot
Springs, B.C. The LBI has started its
apprenticeship program in BC.
DG requested a motion to adjourn. John
Boys so moved and was passed unanimously.

Electrical Plug Mortise
Production Jig
As demonstrated at Jig Talk at
the Aylmer Conference, a small
box of 2x6s
and 2" plywood
scraps and a padded Mini Pro Bar on
your power saw make quick work of
plug mortises. I added a bubble level to
the topside and use a cordless drill driv-
er to screw the box to the log wall.
Often I use a horizontal centre line on
the log to move the box left or right to
cut a two or three gangable switch. A
corresponding centre line is drawn on the box. Someday I
will make a box to cut multiple switches but, until then, this
system works well. Use a switch box as a gauge to mark
the offset required. Have your
licensed electrician install boxes
that have the wire knockouts
exit the rear instead of the
sides and little
chisel work
should be
required.
I also use
an oval
shaped alu-
minum flat
stock tem-
plate to mark
the log for a
small plumb
scarf prior to
using the jig.
These are cut with a radius sole planer and touched up
with a disc grinder and the flat produced should exceed the
height and width of the cover plate to be used.

On the Web, the traditional mar-
keting credo of Build it, and they will
come has been
replaced by
Promote it,
and they will
come. It does-
nt matter how
nice your site
looks, or how easy
it is to navigate, or
how informative
the content is, if no one can actually
find your Web site. The good news is
that if you have a small business Web
site or even a personal Web site, you
can still compete by using the same
search engine positioning strate-
gies utilized by major online market-
ing campaigns.
Search engine positioning
consists of four stages: 1. Page
preparation, 2. Link building, 3. Search
engine submission, and 4. Monitoring
and analysis.
Before we go any further, lets get
a couple of things straight: Search
engines are only one piece of
the puzzle. A complete Web site
marketing strategy must take into
account how users typically access
your Web site: The majority already
know your Web site address and
they may type it in or link to it from
your e-mail signature, the second
group follows links from other sites
to yours, and the third group uses a
search engine to find your site.
Lets also mention the important
role your Web site statistics will
play in this game. Talk to your
Internet Service Provider or Web
hosting service and make sure you
have access to regularly updated
Web stats. Now you can find out
exactly how many people have visit-
ed your Web site, what pages they
are viewing, which search engines
and keywords were used to find
your site, how long visitors are stay-
ing at your site, and even where they
are from. Use your stats to gauge the
effectiveness of your marketing
strategies, and fine-tune both your
marketing campaign and the
performance of your Web site.
Now lets get started! The first
and most critical step in online
marketing is building the best
Web site you can afford to
build. After all, this Web site is your
face to the world. Once your site has
been built, you must prepare it for
search engines. Every page of your
Web site should have an informative
page title, a list of keywords and a

description, as well as indexable text
containing your most important key-
words. The keywords and descrip-
tion reside in the META tags of your
document and are not displayed
on the Web site itself.
An increasingly important compo-
nent of search engine positioning is
increasing the relevance of your
site by building links to it from other
sites. This process is referred to as
link building. There are two main
reasons for focusing on link building:
The number of sites linking to
your Web site is a major factor in
determining how your site ranks on
most major search engines, and
Following links from other sites
is the number two way people visit
Web sites.
So how can you build links?
By searching out industry and
regional directories where you could
have your site included, for example,
the ILBA Web site found at
www.logassociation.org.
By exchanging links between
other clients to build an extensive
network of links to benefit everyone.
By purchasing ads with links on
other Web sites.
You can constantly monitor to see
who is linking to your site, and just as
importantly, you can measure exact-
ly how many visitors are following a
particular link to your site. After
reviewing this data you will have the
information you need to make those
important marketing decisions.
After you have optimized your
Web site and built those all-impor-
tant links to your site, youre ready
to submit your Web site to search
engines. Choose the search
engines your target audience is
most likely to use. In North
America, the top search engines
include Google, Yahoo, AllTheWeb

Tracking The Success of
Your Advertising:
Additional domain names
or Web site addresses can be
used to track the efficiency of
more traditional marketing
campaigns. For example, you
can place an ad in a magazine
referencing a specific domain
name not normally used by
visitors to your site.Your Web
site statistics can then be used
to determine how many visi-
tors were convinced enough
by your ad to visit your Web
site.

aiming for audiences outside of North America, visit
Search Engine Colossus (www.searchenginecolossus.com)
for a list of search engines used in countries around the
globe.
Is it worthwhile paying a submission service to submit
your Web site to 400+ search engines, or can you do it
yourself? You decide: In North America, the top 10
search engines direct approximately 97 percent of Web
site traffic. If you focus your efforts on the top 10 search
engines and make link building your number one priority,
you will be rewarded.
On a final note, dont forget to incorporate your Web
site into your traditional marketing campaign by plastering
your Web site address on business cards, letterhead,
invoices, brochures, posters, magazines, Yellow Pages ads,
and on every e-mail you send out Youll be surprised to
find out that the majority of your Web site traffic is gen-
erated by people who already know your Web site
address.

engines at www.searchenginewatch.com.

Publications Committee Report
Some exciting events took place at
the Conference in Aylmer. The
Publications
Committee had
the chance to
meet face to face
with John Boys and
discuss the publica-
tion and printing of
the Jig Book. As a
result of that
meeting, two pro-
posals for the printing of the Jig Book
will be presented to the Board of
Directors. Each proposal reflects the
costs for printing and what the
break-even point is for each of the
proposals.
John committed the time neces-
sary to finish the last few pages of the
Jig Book so we can have it printed and
ready for sale this year. Thanks, John,
for your dedication to this project.
Sign-up sheets were circulated at
the Conference asking who is inter-
ested in purchasing the Jig Book. All
told, 37 people signed up to purchase
the Jig Book. All of you who want to
get your names on the list for the
first printing of the Jig Book, please let
the ILBA office staff know and your
names will be added to the list.
While at the Conference, John
Boys presented an idea for his next
project. It is for a Log Home Finishing
Book. This project may be also pre-
sented in the form of a CD. Wouldnt
it be great to supply your clients or
contractors with a tool that shows
eight different ways to install win-
dows?
This CD would be a compilation
of finish and construction details from
the members of the ILBA. Go John!
You certainly have the Publications
Committees support as well as many
of the members that were at Aylmer.
Great Spring to all,
Jeff Patterson, Chairman,
Membership Committee

members. This membership number
breaks down as 182 Company
Members, 142 Individual Members and
43 Employee Members. We now have
members from 21 different countries.
We will be looking at a proposal to
restructure the membership cate-
gories that may include Government
Officials and Non-Builder related
Company Members. If you have any
ideas, please feel free to contact me at

Many people that attended the

their membership was to them indi-
vidually or for their companies. With
this excitement, we see our member-
ship continuing in its growth. If you
know of anyone who may be interest-
ed in joining, please call or drop our
office staff a note and they will be
pleased to send out a membership
application.
