Vish-Kanya

Vedic astrology is based upon Nakshatras or Constellations that are 27 in numbers, hence Indian
astrology is also known as Nakshatra Shastra. These 27 constellations occur in the 12 zodiac
signs, each zodiac sign having two and a quarter Nakshatra. One nakshatra is further divided into
four equal parts. One nakshatra's arc is of 13 degrees and 20 minutes and this multiplied by 27
makes the complete circle of 360 degrees zodiac.
The position of the Moon at birth in any of the twelve zodiac signs is called the Rashi or the
Moon sign of the person. But the Moon's position in a particular nakshatra is of utmost
importance for making predictions for an individual. This is even more important in India due to
the prevailing system of matching the horoscopes of the boy and girl before arranging their
marriage.
The ancient seers observed that the birth under certain nakshatras bring misfortune to the
individual and for girls this unfortunate yoga adversely affected their marital life. Hence these
yogas were termed Vish-Kanya, or unfortunate girls. It could be the male bias that this adverse
combination of the Moon and a particular nakshatra was given a female terminology because
even the boys born under these adverse yogas suffer equally.
Given below are the 27 nakshatras or the constellations and the zodiac signs in which these are
situated.

Those born under certain nakshatras seem to bring misfortune to their families that cannot be
explained rationally. However, no single factor is responsible for any event in our lives and one
has to see the horoscope in totality to make any specific prediction. For example by having the
beneficial planet like the Jupiter in a powerful situation in a birth chart is enough to mitigate all
the evil influences of other destructive yogas.
Some of the problematic nakshatras are Ashlesha, Vishakha, Jyeshta, and Moola.
1. One born under Ashlesha first quarter brings death to one's mother-in-law.
2. Those born under Vishakha last quarter could cause death to married partner's
younger brother.
3. If born under Jyeshta first quarter, there is danger to partner's elder brother.
4. Those born under Moola first quarter may indicate early death of father-in-law.
Vish-Kanya Yogas
1. One at whose birth the Ascendant is hemmed between two planets is believed
to destroy one's own and partner's family.
2. The birth on the 12th Tithi, Shatabhisha nakshatra and on a Sunday.
3. Birth on Tuesday when the Tithi is 7th and the nakshatra happens to be
Vishakha.
4. The 2nd Tithi on a Saturday when the Moon is in Ashlesha.
5. Birth on Sunday when the Moon is in Bharani nakshatra.
6. Birth on Monday with the Moon in Chitra.
7. On Tuesday, Moola nakshatra.
8. Wednesday and Dhanishta.
9. Thursday and Jyeshta.
10. Friday and Purvashada.
11. Saturday and Revati.
What Is A Tithi?
The monthly lunar cycle of 30 days is divided into two halves of a fortnight each. When the
Moon is waxing to the full Moon on Purnima, that fortnight is called Shukla Paksha. The waning
Moon cycle to the Amavasya, is called Krishna Paksha. The 15days in each fortnight are called
the Tithis, from 1st to the 15th.
It is believed that a boy born under any one of the above Vish-kanya combinations will cause the
ruin of his own as well as his wife's family.
To conclude, it is important to study in detail all the innumerable aspects and combinations in
one's chart before one can make any specific prediction.
