While a significant amount of this information Policy and Important information relate to Chem 125H, there are a
number of differences in 125J.
This Syllabus Information is for the Chem 125 H course.
Textbook(s) Chem 125H -- Chemical Principles by Zumdahl and by Zumdahl & Decoste. 7th edition is current, but
6th and 5th editions are similar and are ok. The 4th edition is also similar in subject presentation but has a less material-
Like most texts, these are expensive. You may be able to find copies on line. (Text is different from Regular Chem 125,
but we cover the same material, same schedule).
Lecture - students are expected to go over the notes in Moodle and read the textbook material relating to the Moodle listed
topics before class.
Recitation - Regular Chem 125 Chem classes are large but have separate 50 minute recitations in small groups. These are
open and you may attend any recitation(s). Honors does not have a separate formal recitation session I try to cover
problems in class.
Genearal Chem I Attendance policy - Attendance is required at all course meetings. if you are in class, but using a cell
phone in any way, using a computer, or listening to music you will not get credit for that day's attendance.
Homework - Most homework for Chem 125H is on the course moodle web site. There are several added assignments.
There are two types of homework on moodle; regular homework and basic homework. Knowing how to work and
complete the homework problems is important and strongly related to exam questions.
Moodle has a calendar with due dates for the moodle assigned homework problems.
Homework should be done on time, and moodle will not accept solutions after the due dates / times.
It is recommended that you do not wait to the last minute to do your homework. online systems are not 100% reliable and
unexpected events may occur. you should try to do your homework early enough to allow for unforeseen problems. in
general, there is no late homework.
Grading will include a total of five exams, three common exams (100 points each) one in-class exam (not a common),
and one final (250 points). It also includes a project, homework (see below) and in-class participation.
Common Examinations and Policies - all chem 12x courses. Three common examinations will be administrated
throughout the semester. Use the bathroom before or after test. It is the policy for that No work is allowed on the test after
leaving to use the bathroom. if you have a medical condition, bring it to the instructor's attention in advance so special
arrangements can be made. During sign in a NJIT photo id or valid driver's license needs to be visible. No books, cell
phones, notes, tables, or scrap paper will be allowed.*** only a non-programmable - non-graphic scientific calculator is
permitted. The cost is about $10. Students should have two #2 pencils to all exams.
Students are reminded that violations of the njit student honor code are serious and that the chemistry division will make
an extraordinary effort to prevent cheating on all examinations and will vigorously prosecute cases of cheating, if any, in
accordance with njit policy and procedures.


Course Grading:
Common exams #1, #2, and #3, 100 points each; in-class exam 100 points, final exam is 250 points.
Project(s) 50 to 100 points. Total of all homework is generally worth approximately 150 points and can vary.
If you believe there is an error in the grading of an exam, you have until the class following return of the exam to submit
the exam for regrading. You need to write a brief description of the problem on the front or back of the exam.The answer
key is provided in moodle; it is good to go over the answers and to learn from the questions.

Chemistry 125 covers the first 12 chapters of the Chemsitry Text by Tro.
In Chemical Principles by Zumdahl these chapters are 1 5, 9, 12 14, 16, 17. Chem 125H also covers ch 21.
Chem 125 H also covers most parts of the chemistry I text chapter in Organic Chemistry.

HOMEWORK: Homework for the course is in Moodle with the due dates. There are two kinds of homeworkbasic and
regular. Basic homework is self-contained, that is, the problems are explained and examples are given. Regular homework
contains more challenging problems. Typically basic homework is due on Saturday and regular homework is due on
Thursday. All homework must be done correctly to get credit.
