A
scending Technologies is a manu-
facturer and innovator of micro UAVs.
With over 1000 multicopters sold worldwide,
the company possesses a unique wealth of
experience. Benet from the expertise of the
long-standing technology leaders in unmanned
aerial vehicles.
The German high-tech company was founded
in Krailling (near Munich) in 2007 by four
pioneers of UAV technology: Dipl.-Ing. Michael
Achtelik, Klaus-Michael Doth, M.Sc., Dipl.-Ing.
Daniel Gurdan and Dipl.-Ing. Jan Stumpf.
Today they are still the managers and owners
of the company. With the invention and de-
velopment of the Silverlit X-UFO in 2002, the
national winners of the Jugend forscht* (young
researchers) competition, Gurdan and Doth
laid the foundations for the international hype
that would envelop the quadcopter and multi-
copter. Teaming up with Achtelik and Stumpf,
also prize winners at the Jugend forscht
competition, the technology was perfected
so as to enable the development of their own
production series. They remain a trendsetter in
the UAV market.
After all, in 2010 they set the world record for
long ights for mini UAVs with 12 hours 26
minutes and 56.9 seconds: The AscTec Pelican
from the AscTec Research Line for university
research was kept permanently charged during
the ight by a laser beam and in principle could
have kept ying indenitely. Cooperation with
the NASA-nanced specialists from LaserMo-
tive LLC made it possible. It also shows how
precisely a quadcopter system can y and how
accurately it can hold its position, commented
Gordon Strickert from the German Aerospace
Center (DLR) on the successful mission.
To this day, Ascending Technologies accompli-
shes pioneering work in the area of sensor
data processing and ight attitude stabilization
with a clear focus on professional applications
of the ight systems in the civilian sector. In
2013, cooperation with e-volo meant that they
hit the headlines once again.
The company used the brand new market
leading centerpiece of their technology, the
AscTec Trinity control unit, to make the maiden
ight of the rst electric-operated long-range
manned multicopter possible. The environ-
mentally friendly and emissions-free volocopter
VC200 made aviation history on November 17,
2013 in Karlsruhe.
The AscTec Research Line is market leading in
R&D and used in research labs around the world.
The UAVs AscTec Firey, AscTec Pelican and
AscTec Hummingbird provide unique ight cha-
racteristics and endless research opportunities.
Like all systems from Ascending Technologies,
the AscTec Research Line stands for quality
made in Germany as well as safety and reliability
through progress. True to the premise:
Amazing technology!

The AscTec Firey
/// The most advanced R&D system.
T
he AscTec Firey is the
latest and most advan-
ced UAV in our eets.
It was engineered for highest se-
curity and easy handling, hence
it is perfect for your automatic
ight experiments. Besides the
small nonhazardous propellers
and low take-off weight, it comes
with a patented redundant pro-
pulsion system, which allows
a controlled ight with only 5
rotors. The modular structure
enables fast component ex-
changes in case of a crash or
modication during integration
and testing. The frame in
frame concept was designed to
decouple the xed connection
of payload and IMU from the
vibration inducing motors. This
concept raises the quality of the
sensor and camera data and
avoids dynamic misalignments.

AscTec AutoPilot
/// Precise and multi-
functional control unit as
basis of all research and
development.
The AscTec AutoPilot contains
all necessary sensors, two on-
board ARM7 microprocessors
and various communication
interfaces to function like an
IMU and ight controller. It can
directly interpret the R/C data
sent by the pilot and the serial
data sent from a ground PC.
For automatic missions, you
can program and upload your
own control algorithms directly
onto the HLP of the UAV.
If more processing power
is required or additional
sensors like cameras or laser
scanners need to be connec-
ted, an additional onboard
processor is installed. Its
high performance and fast
communication enable you to
handle large amounts of data
onboard. An optional WiFi
module can be integrated to
exchange this data between
the additional processor and
a ground PC.
All gathered data can be
used for your control algo-
rithms and the calculated
commands can then be sent
to the AscTec AutoPilot.
Low Level
processor (LLP)
/// Well proven control
algorithms. Data fusion:
Raw & calculated IMU data.
The LLP handles sensor data
processing, data fusion as
well as our fast and stable
attitude control algorithm with
an update rate of 1 kHz. It also
processes the position control
algorithm, using the onboard
magnetometer and GPS modu-
le as additional sensor inputs.
All ight systems provide
3 ight modes:
GPS Mode: Attitude-,
height- & position- control
activated.
Height Mode: Attitude-
and height-control
activated.
Manual Mode: Atti tude-
control activated.
Sensor data can be retrieved
from the LLPvia a serial inter-
face using a predened serial
protocol. The serial interface
can be used to send attitude
commands: Pitch angle, roll
angle, yaw rate and thrust or
waypoint (in GPS Mode). Up-
date rates of up to 15 Hz can be
accomplished via XBee wireless
serial link. Higher update rates
of up to 100 Hz can be achieved
using a serial cable connection.
Available data packages,
that can be polled from the
AscTec AutoPilot:
Raw IMU data
calculated IMU data
R/C data
GPS data
High Level
processor (HLP)
/// Easy programming. Fast
update rates: Up to 1,000 Hz
calculated IMU data.
The AscTec AutoPilot offers
easy programmability and
safety, while testing your own
control algorithms. It's like a
backup. You can ash the HLP
with your own algorithms and
let it control the ight system.
The two microprocessors com-
municate with an extremely fast
rate of 1 kHz, hence all sensor
data is available to the LLP and
the HLP. Control commands
can be sent back to the LLP at
the same frequency, for examp-
le rotational speed commands
for each individual motor, pitch/
roll/yaw/thrust commands,
attitude commands or waypoint
commands.
The HLP offers UART, SPI
and I2C interfaces as well as
simple port I/Os to connect
your own devices like additi-
onal sensors, servo motors
or extension boards. Custom
payloads can be powered by a
5 or 12 V supply.
Safety functions
/// Safety switch: Integrate
your algorithms and test.
Always rely on the well
proven control algorithms
on the LLP to recover in
critical situations, yet.
Telemetry in realtime:
All necessary system information
such as GPS position, height,
velocity, battery load, link and
GPS quality is displayed live on
your PC or on the optional JETI
telemetry box on your remote.
Sensor output check:
All important sensor values and
system parameters are checked
automatically before each ight.
If a value is critical, it will be
identied and interrupt the laun-
ching procedure automatically.
3 Emergency modes:
The pilot can choose one of
three emergency modes to de-
termine the automatic landing in
case of link loss: Direct landing,
Comehome straight (at its
current height) or Comehome
high (at max. mission height). As
soon as the link is reestablished
you may take control again and
continue the ight.

AscTec SDK
/// HLP framework with code examples & command modes.
The AscTec SDK is a toolkit to get your self programmed algo-
rithms on the onboard microprocessor of your AscTec UAV. You
can write your C-code in the given framework of the SDK and
ash it on the HLP via a JTAG or serial connection. The basic
concept of the AscTec AutoPilot is to have two processors: The
LLP and the HLP. While the LLP handles all hardware commu-
nication, a proven ight controller and the data fusion, the HLP
is free for custom code. And as a safety backup you can always
switch back to the LLP in case of an emergency situation. Several
code examples help the rst time user understand the idea and
possibilities of the AscTec SDK. Four control modes are available,
one lets you command each single motor individually, another lets
you send waypoint commands directly from the HLP. For a better
overview all readable sensor data are available in a single data
structure. Together with an updated motor controller rmware,
the motor feedback is now available.
http://wiki.asctec.de/display/AR/AscTec+SDK
AscTec Simulink Toolkit
/// Transfer your Simulink code to the processor easily.
Matlab Simulink, the well-known system modeling software, can
also be used to program the HLP of our AscTec UAVs. Therefore
we offer the AscTec Simulink toolkit which works in cooperation
with the AscTec SDK. The toolkit includes a predened onboard
model to integrate your own Simulink based control algorithms.
This model can be automatically translated into C-code for the
AscTec SDK. A simple attitude control example is already imple-
mented to show you the possibilities offered by the toolkit.
There are several predened parameter-, control- and debug
blocks available which can be integrated into your own control
algorithms. The Simulink toolkit offers a UART communication
model to monitor these debug channels (with up to 50 Hz), as
well as to send individual control commands, both via an XBee
modem on the serial port of the HLP. Furthermore, you can easily
update your parameters or store them permanently by running
an M-le.
http://wiki.asctec.de/display/AR/AscTec+Simulink+Toolkit
AscTec Communication Interface
/// Easy and fast communication with HLP.
The AscTec Communication Interface (ACI) is a convenient
method of communicating between your device and your local
machine (remote software). It is designed for requesting variables,
sending commands and setting parameters easily.
The operation is simple: The local machine asks the device,
which variables, commands or parameters are available on the
device with a full description of each of them. You can create
your own data packets to send or receive. The advantage of this
method is that you can choose, which variables shall be received
at which transmitting rate from the device, and which commands
and parameters you want to send to or set on the device.
