I was born and bred in Sheffeld, trained as an engineer and have spent most of my working life
leading manufacturing companies in South Yorkshire. I am now married with four children: so I have
become very familiar with local schools and hospitals! I have always tried to give something back to
the community by being:
A governor of a local school.
A director of NHS South Yorkshire, where I chaired the audit committee.
Chairman of Sheffelds Training and Enterprise Council (TEC): supporting apprentices and
encouraging small businesses.
When I was at the TEC, I was on the South Yorkshire Forum, worked closely with other TECs and
secured 2.4bn new funding to help improve communities and increase opportunities for people.
In the NHS I focussed on reducing health inequalities and have a reputation for asking the necessary
probing questions and for standing up for patients - investigating causes of any underperformance to
ensure no one is left out.
It is these skills of investigating root causes of why any community may feel poorly served that need
to be brought to the important role of Police and Crime Commissioner.
I do not see this as a party political role, indeed a misplaced political correctness has led to the
needless continuation of many of the problems that had been covered up for far too long. It is the
result of embedded failures of those who should have been in charge, not asking the searching
questions they should have been, but one where a fresh look, by someone not tainted by past
involvement with the local authorities can ask the questions that people in the past didnt want to
ask or have the right skills or determination to probe or follow through.
If elected, I will work tirelessly with communities across South Yorkshire to rebuild trust, but based on
openness and solid foundations. I will stand up for victims of crime and those in fear of crime.

ABOUT
IAN WALKER
REBUILDING TRUST will be my NO.1 PRIORITY
PUTTING VICTIMS FIRST Victims and those in fear of crime need to
know that I will always put their needs and rights ahead of the criminals.
ASKING THE TOUGH QUESTIONS The old way led to too many
cosy relationships where no one dared ask the probing questions. I am untainted by
past association with the local councils, so bring a fresh and independent approach.
SUPPORT THE POLICE to do their job without political interference
and ensure they have all the tools and resources they need to protect us.

1. Freeing police to fght crime by

cutting red tape and scrapping
unnecessary targets.
I want to ensure there is a consistent
approach across all of South Yorkshire so
that best practice can be shared and rolled
out for the beneft of all. We need to
re-examine the divisional structures which
are too closely aligned to local authority
boundaries and which have led to both
higher overhead costs and in cases
ineffective relationships with local
authorities. We have seen all too clearly
that this arrangement was vulnerable to
not serving victims well.
2. Giving criminals tougher
sentences so communities are
protected and justice is done.
I will work with the many excellent
rehabilitation organisations which work
so hard to break the cycle of reoffending.
I will though support efforts for tougher
sentencing to be upheld and lobby hard for
a crackdown on early releases so that our
communities are better protected from
repetitive offenders.

4. Stopping people becoming
criminals by tackling the root
causes of crime.
I will develop links with other partner
organisations, such as local authorities, the NHS
and the many voluntary organisations that
work to support people in need. I have been
a trustee of a charity helping disadvantaged
youth. In the NHS I have focussed on improving
peoples different life expectancies between the
poorest and the richest areas. Additionally, I see
the value of encouraging environments that
support strong and stable families so that our
children develop their self-worth and are less
exposed to vulnerable situations where they
could be exploited.
3. Giving police the powers they
need to tackle criminals, using the
latest tools and techniques.
Police funding is under pressure and, if elected,
I undertake to lobby the Home Secretary to
support South Yorkshire with further resources
because of the particular and historic challenges
we are facing, so that nothing detracts from the
needs of current day victims.
I will ensure that the police are given the
resources tools and access to best techniques
and best practices that they need to do a
world class job.
In particular, I commit to fully supporting the
police in the tough jobs they do to serve us
all and do all I can to build their morale, whilst
being a supportive, but where necessary a
critical commissioner.
I will ensure that the role of the police is
not politicised and that the needs of all
communities ,rural or urban, whatever ethnic or
religious background, whether rich or poor, get
the same treatment and support.

5. Making police answer to the
community to help drive down
crime in your area
My priority will be to rebuild trust for all
communities and crucially between all
communities. Every community has a few
bad apples and every community knows the
kind of people these are and want support
from the police to nip bad behaviour and
anti-social behaviour in the bud. This is not
least in order hold up the good name of each
community and not bring dis-honour on them.
No community wants to continue to suffer the
drip-drip effects of the anti-social behaviour
of a few making their lives a misery. I will work
with you to get these priority messages to
the police. I will be your servant in ensuring
the police serve you in the way you need and
want.
I will furthermore ensure that there are easier
ways for victims to come forward to report
crimes in safe environments where they will be
treated with respect, sensitivity and listened to
seriously.
