It's the machine of death used in the French Revolution.

2-What was the message that was sent to Mr. Lorry?
He had got to wait at Dover for a young lady.

3- What was the story of Dr. Manette and Lucie?
About twenty years ago, Miss Manette, a French doctor married
an English lady. They had a daughter, but just before she was
born, her father disappeared.
Nobody knew what had happened to him. His unhappy wife died,
and their daughter was brought back to London. Dr. Manette was
in prison because he had a powerful enemy with the power to
send him to prison and to keep him there, hidden and forgotten,
for 18 years.

4- Describe Dr. Manette when Lucie and Mr. Lorry went to bring him
back to London.
He was a thin, white-haired man sitting on a wooden seat. He was
very busy making shoes.

5-"From a small box the old man took some golden hair." Explain.
When Lucie put her arm around the old man and held him, he
took some golden hair and looked at it and then he looked at
Lucie's hair. He found that the two lockets of hair are the same.
He thought that Lucie was his wife but she was too young.
6-"He will be better far away from this city where he has lost so much of
his life". Comment.
These words were said by Lucie in the room above Defarge's
wine shop, when she went with Mr. Lorry to bring her father back
to London. She wanted to take him away from Paris where he was
a prisoner for 18 years.

7-What did Lucie say about the prisoner at the Old Bailey?
She said that she had met the prisoner on the boat which had
carried her and her father from France to England. He was very
good and kind to her father and to her.

8-How had Dr. Manette changed very much?
Dr. Manette no longer looked like the man in the room above
Defarge's wine shop five years ago. His hair was white, but his
eyes were bright and became strong. Sometimes, his face
became dark and sad when he remembered the years in the
Bastille prison, at these times only his daughter could help him.

9-"Nobody is good enough for my darling Lucie," Comment.
Miss Pross said these words to Mr. Lorry at Dr. Manette's house.
She doesn't like the frequent visiting of Mr. Darnay and Mr.
Carton. She thought that nobody was good enough to marry
Lucie.

10- What did Defarge say to Gaspard when the child died?
He asked him to be brave because his child had died quickly, and
without pain and that was better to die like that than to go on
living in those terrible conditions.

11-"You were looking at my coach in a very strange way. Why was that?"
Comment.
The Marquis said these words to one of the villagers when he
stopped in a village near his castle. The villager was looking at a
man holding on under the Marquis's coach. The man was covered
in dust. He ran away down the hill outside the village.

12-Killing the Marquis is a kind of revenge. Explain.
The name of the Marquis's family was hated everywhere in
France. They were hard, cruel landowners. The accident of killing
the child by the Marquis's coach forced the child's father to take
revenge and to kill the Marquis leaving a message saying "Drive
him fast to his grave."

13- Describe the conditions of Charles Darnay after the death of his uncle.
Darnay had become a successful teacher of French in London.
He had known, when he came to London, that he would have to
work hard to earn his living, and he was successful. He was in
love with Lucie from the time of the Old Baily.

14- After Darnay had told Dr.Manette about his feelings towards Lucie,
Dr. Manette returned to his old prison work of making shoes. Explain.
Dr. Manette loved his daughter very much. That love was the
greatest thing in his life. He thought that Darnay would come
between him and his daughter and they would be separated
because of Darnay.

15- "It's too late for that. I shall never be better than I am." Comment.
Mr. Carton said these words to Lucie when he visited her in her
house to tell her about his love and about his life and how the
way of his life was not good for his health. She asked him to
change the way of his life but he said that was too late.

16-The idea of sacrifice came to be clear when Carton told Lucie about
his love. Explain.
When Mr. Carton told Lucie about his love, he knew that she was
in love with Mr. Darnay, so he asked her not to tell anyone about
what he had said. And she should know that he could do
anything for her or for anyone close to her. He could give his life
to keep someone she loved alive and close to her.

17- "I'll put him on the list tomorrow." Comment.
These words said by madam Defarge to her husband in his wine
shop. That was when he told her about the spy that was sent to
Saint Antoine. Madam Defarge had a list where she recorded the
names of the poor's enemies, like the noblemen, the landowners
and every person oppressed the poor.

18- Defarge wasn't happy when he knew that Lucie married Mr. Darnay.
Explain.
Because Miss Manette had married the nephew of the Marquis
that Gaspard killed. Her new husband was really the new
Marquis, but he preferred to be unknown in England. Defarge
and his wife recorded the name of Evermonde in the list of
revenge because they were the enemies of the poor.

19-There was much blood and violence in the French Revolution. Explain.
They carried guns, knives, sticks, even stones anything that
could be a weapon. They shouted and screamed ready to fight
and to die in battle, set fire to the Bastille and freed the prisoners,
killed the officers, set fire to the castle of the Marquis and
watched the fire and they did nothing to save the people inside.

20-Things were changed in France after the revolution. Show how.
The citizens in France had fought to gain power, and they used
it. Castles were burned, laws were changed, and the rich and the
nobles died their heads cut off by that terrible machine of
death, the Guillotine. In Paris the king was put in prison, and
was sent to the Guillotine as well.

21- Why did Mr. Lorry have to travel to Paris?
Because his work there was to find and hide papers that might
be dangerous to the customers of Tellson's bank.

22- "You must not go. Your life is here, with your family." Comment.
These words were said by Mr. Lorry to Mr. Darnay who wanted
to travel to France to help the poor people there as he was sorry
for them. This situation reflected to us how Mr. Darnay was
sympathetic to the poor people in France not towards his family
there or the noblemen.

23- The French Revolution defended the rights of the poor and at the
same time oppressed the innocent. Explain.
The French Revolution couldn't differentiate between the
noblemen who were so cruel to the poor and those who were
sympathetic to them. They killed even the servants of the
noblemen just because they were employed by them. That
happened with Gabelle, the Marquis official, although he did his
best for the poor. Also Mr. Darnay was a victim to that cruel
revenge. He was arrested and sent to prison although he left his
uncle defending the rights of the miserable people.
