PART A - FIND THE GAP

1.bike safety
Improved integration into road systems to provide safer journeys for cyclists, for
example, indicators or break lights
2.improved bike storage and component holders
Areas to hold bags that are separate from the rider itself riding with a backpack
on can become particularly sweaty and uncomfortable and can also limit movement
whilst cycling. Current bag holders are horizontal trays that sit about the rear tire. A
frame that were to hold the bags upright in a natural position could provide for more
space and allow items in the bag to sit as they normally would
3.battery life of devices
The battery life of small devices such as phones or cameras are a common problem
amongst most who are constantly on the move or do not have access to the compo-
nents to charge their devices. I, for example, travel between university and work on
a daily basis, on occasion for an extended period of time, and by two-thirds of the
day, my phone is on a low battery life
4.storage of drawing items and devices
A year and a half as an architecture student has required me to obtain certain draw-
ing devices and items that are at times particularly awkward to carry eg T-squares,
French curves, rulers, right angle triangles. A storage device that caters directly to
such components would be beyond useful
5.commitment to particular activities throughout the day
Study, work, sleep and exercise, just to name a few, are part of the various activities
throughout my week, which are at times, hard to fnd time for, organize or commit
to. A device that ensured my commitment to activities would be a great component
to daily lifestyle
6.the ability to remember and organize timing
At times, the simple ringtone of my phone is not enough to remind me of something,
or enough to wake me up in the morning. A device that almost would force me to
remember or do something would again, be a great component to daily lifestyle
7.privacy by locking doors without having to install a door lock
Permanent locks on interior doors are not always necessary and should be only
used during specifc times or for specifc reasons. A device much like a doorstop,
which could only be accessed by a personal device, could come to great general
use. Need to sleep in without being disturbed? Need to lock your bedroom door
whilst out?
8.the modifed extension of various cables to an exact preferred length
Some electronics, such as TVs, can have permanently attached power cables
which can make positioning and installing somewhat awkward and frustrating. A
module that could enable the extension of cords to s preferred length would be an
ideal device with most electronics. For example, my TV, which I intended to be wall
mounted, needs to have its cables modifed, so that the plug itself does not have to
run through the wall.
9.trying to attain refned lines and shapes while only drawing freehand
On occasion, ideas spring to mind which I feel the immediate need to draw, which is
somewhat frustrating when all I have to lean on is my knee or the constant shifting
of the bus Im on causes me to draw lines across the page by accident. A device
that could enable me to draw with more stability and refnement in environments
that would otherwise be hard or almost impossible would come of great use to not
only me, but other students as well I imagine
10.portable bike multi tool
Bikes will occasionally come across problems and breakdowns mid journey, and
may possibly leave the rider stranded and helpless. A multi tool that caters to all
components of the bike, which can be carried by or attached to the bike, could come
in use to those who cycle.

PART A - FIND THE GAP
My gap
Improved bike storage and component holders
I personally experience this gap on a regular basis. Cycling is, for the most part, my prima-
ry mode of transport between work, university and other areas. This requires me to carry
around, at times, various pieces of equipment, clothing and other such items. I know several
other people that use cycling as their main mode of transportation to work and university and
such a device would beneft greatly to these people. The design of this item would have to
cater to a universal design standard of bikes an attachment that could be adjusted to the
given bike, and could possibly also be detached.

PART B - DESIGN PROBLEM DEFINITION
Improved bike storage and component holders
This gap addresses the issue that cyclists have in transporting or carrying items during
journeys. My aim is to address this problem with a separate modifcation to a bicycle that
would minimally impact the cyclers ability to ride, and maximize the storage potential on
areas of a bike.
In what way might I
enable a more comfortable ride for the cyclist
increase or maximise space use on a bicycle
*minimally impact on the process of riding a bicycle
integrate a storage system into the already existing frame
create a device that can be easily detached
caters to both bikes and bags universally
PART C - USER NEEDS
General interpretation and feedback from interviews directed a strong focus on trav-
elling between work places, and the need to carry particular items between.
As exemplifed
- Jason Hoad, Student
Uses Bicycle primarily to travel to work on daily basis, small dis-
tance, travels to university on occasion. Storage devices that could
carry clothing and university items would be greatly benefcial
- Ryan Williams, Student
Uses bicycle to travel to university on regular basis, large distance
- Rides more often for leisure. Storage device that could carry
various items would be of great use
- Martin Nathan, Bartender & general maintenance
Uses bicycle to travel to work on occasion, would further optimize
if storage device was available to carry tools to and from work.
Would also be able to pick up small stock for bar.

PART C - USER NEEDS
Fits in with already existing bike
Works with existing frame of the bike
Attaches to areas of the bike conveniently(!)
Works alongside other components of the bike
Is evidently easier than traditional methods of carrying
bags on bike
Rider does not become uncomfortable(!)
Rider does not begin to sweat
Rider can ride with safety, without restraint of the bag
Rider can be less concerned over the safety of items
Can optimize larger spaces more items to carry
Riders departure and arrival made easier
Is visually appealing
Design of component may vary to suit bike
Design is seen as effective and smart use of space
Design is distinctive and recognizable
Elements of design may be adjustable to suit journey
Needs to carry particular items
Can carry a Bag
Can carry a suitcase
Can carry clothing
Can carry books
Can carry fles
Can carry tools
Is effective in carrying items
Makes effective use of otherwise unused spaces(!)
Makes a greater hold of weight can carry more
Can provide for smaller items to be carried as well
Can be packed and unpacked quickly
Holds items sturdily on any given terrain
Can carry varying items and components(!)
Can survive long trips
Is an adjustable device
Can be detached and reattached
Can be adjusted and moved around bike accordingly
Can hold varying sizes and weights of items
Can be customized in visual design to ft overall design of bike
Does not, or even reduces, the process of riding the bike
Set and positioned to not interrupt the process of riding
Making optimal use of bike weight distribution and carry amount
Seems as though there is nothing even attached to the bike
itself
Does not impact the rate or power of which the rider can go
PART D - INITIAL PROJECT IDEA
My project is based on the gap of Bike storage and the transportation of items
whilst on a bike. The current and traditional way of carrying a bag on a bike is
by either wearing it normally as a backpack, which is uncomfortable or in some
cases dangerous, or attaching it to a tray, which has the potential to damage
your bag and the items in it. My aim is to create an attachable component to any
standard of bike that optimizes space and structural integrity of the bike, while
minimalizing the impact on the process of riding, and the experience of the rider.
