ELASTOMERIC MOUNTS BACKGROUND

VMC offers an extensive range of elastomeric isolation
mounts and pads that limit the transmission of struc-
ture-borne vibration and impacts. These can be
used in a wide variety of applications including
electronics equipment, engines and gensets,
vehicle cab mounts, HVAC equipment and
general industrial machinery. Structure-
borne shock and vibration can lead to
malfunctions and shortened life of
equipment, not to mention annoy-
ance caused by vibrating building
structures and generated audible
noise. VMCs elastomeric products are
designed to minimize these events.
Elastomeric compounds are extremely versatile. Rubber is just one common
name for one of the families of materials encompassed by this term. Elastomers can
be cut or molded into almost any shape and are available in a range of stiffnesses to
meet isolation and load-bearing requirements. Elastomers provide inherent damping
of dynamic inputs. VMC has the capability to engineer and produce special designs
both in terms of geometry and elastomeric compound.
Elastomers cannot rust. Properly selected they can resist oil, most industrial chemi-
cals, industrial temperatures and the effects of the weather such as sunlight (UV)
and ozone. Molded-in metal structures are protected
by coatings or the elastomer itself. Many of VMCs
elastomers are color coded to indicate load rating.
This permanent, pigmented color permeates the
material and cannot wear or peel off. Mount rating is
therefore easily determined in the field by inspection,
even from a distance.
VMCs engineered elastomeric pads provide excel-
lent mid-to-high frequency vibration attenuation as
base mounts in compression. They are economical
and can be tailored to the application in the field.
Typical uses include air compressors, business
machines, fans, printing presses,
pumps and shears. Bolting through
pad mounts into a supporting floor requires a compliant layer under the
bolt head and clearance around the bolt shank. This is to avoid a
short-circuit for vibration energy through the bolt. Pads can be
stacked to create a softer suspension and interleaved with metal plates
to increase stability.
To accommodate particular project needs, elastomeric mounts are
available with various mounting provisions. Special
needs should be brought to the
attention of VMCs Engineering
Department.

In its simplest form, an elastomeric mount is a block
of material that will deflect under an applied load.
Elastomers include many varieties of rubber, plastics,
composite materials and cork. In one form or another,
VMC offers all of these. VMCs line of molded mounts
are manufactured from both synthetic and natural rub-
bers. They may or may not have metal inserts molded
into them to provide mounting interfaces and to control
elastic response and stresses.
Like any resilient mounting system, we have a dynamic
input, a desired output, and a box between them that
modifies the input to the output. The critical factors
necessary to determine the character of the system
are the supported mass, its approximate center of
gravity and its geometry. These will enable us to deter-
mine the static load on each mount. Some types of
equipment impose an additional reaction load against
their mounts. Elastically supported engines and motors
that drive against something that is not on the same
elastic suspension are of particular interest. A good
example of this is a vehicle engine and transmission
that drives against the vehicles axle and wheels. Some
equipment may exhibit a violent shudder upon start-up
and shut-down. Inertial reactions of equipment that
accelerate and decelerate quickly may also have to be
considered. Applied loads that occur infrequently can
be given different consideration than steady state loads
and repetitive loads when selecting a mount based
on strength.
From a theoretical point of view, we can select a
mount by first considering the frequency of the input to
be attenuated. This is usually the lowest frequency, or
at least the lowest frequency with amplitude of any
consequence. We then step back by a factor of 3 or
more to establish a filter point, or suspension natural
frequency at a lower frequency. We can calculate the
desired spring rate:

n
=
1

K
2 m
Expected transmissibility, or in other words, isolation
efficiency, can be obtained from the classical transmis-
sibility equation for first order systems, or from its
graphical representation.
Now having a maximum load and target spring rate,
the catalog can be searched for an appropriate mount.
Given the great variety of mounts that VMC offers, this
could prove to be a confusing task. A simpler

approach to selection may be rooted less in mathe-
matics. VMCs elastomer mount product line can be
divided along several functional lines.
The decision whether to use flush mounting has much
to do with the users thoughts on installation method
and surrounding structures. Flush mounts put less
demands on the design of the supporting structures.
Usually a reasonable flat surface and two simple
through or tapped holes are all that is required.
Sinking the mount into the surface of the supporting
structure may not only save on installed height but also
places side loads into the plane of the support. This
limits local bending stresses. Mounts that are not flush
require features in the supporting structure. In particu-
lar, the RB, Ring and Bushing series depend on
mounting hole and plate geometry to achieve their
rated characteristics. The decision whether to use a
fail-safe or captive mount is dictated by the end items
usage. Generally, mobile equipment should be captive.
A payload in motion is subject to side thrusts and
uplifts even if the primary load is in compression.
Despite all best efforts, something that is mobile or
transportable may be turned on its side or upside
down. When it comes to ultimate strength, rubber can-
not match metals. For this reason, we do not rely on
rubber alone to keep a payload from becoming a sec-
ondary projectile. Requirements imposed by code such
as for earthquake (seismic) resistance and wind loads
necessitate captive, failsafe mounts. Beyond this, spe-
cific load-bearing capacity may have to be established
to meet job requirements. Failsafe does not imply inde-
structible. If a specific load requirement exists, or if fail-
ure of the metal members may result in a hazard, VMC
should be consulted. An all-attitude mount functions as
a resilient member in all directions. The elastic proper-
ties in each direction may differ. An all-attitude mount is
captive. Not all captive mounts are all-attitude. All of
VMCs captive mounts are all-attitude to some extent.
With the field of possible mounts narrowed based on
installation preference and function, we can now turn
our attention to selecting based on applied load. The
numbers that VMC publishes are load ratings. They are
not ultimate loads to failure and they are not necessari-
ly recommended loads. The nominal suspension natu-
ral frequency that we publish in the catalog will be
achieved when a mass which applies the rated load is
supported on the mount. In most cases, increasing this
load slightly should not be a problem but will result in a
slightly lower natural frequency. VMC should be con-
sulted when increasing load much over the rated load
is being considered. Applying lighter loads will result in
a higher suspension natural frequency. The higher nat-
ural frequency, or stiffer, suspension may provide less
attenuation of lower frequency disturbances. In a
worst case, it may approach or coincide with a higher
disturbing frequency and result in amplification. For this
reason, we like to look at the suspension natural fre-
quency and disturbing frequencies and not simply load
ratings. The presence of shocks, transient reaction
loads and large amplitude inputs may be good reason
for backing down from the rated load to add margin.
For most industrial applications, we look to molded
elastomer mounts to provide suspensions between 8 Hz
and 35 Hz. Depending on the specifics of the applica-
tion, we may require only minimal resistance to side
loads or complete elastic suspension in all directions.
Our catalog details off-axis capability or stiffness ratio in
some cases. Various axial to radial stiffness ratios can
be achieved with the variety of mounts, from1:5, through
1:1 to 5:1 and beyond. Where there is a question on
off-axis characteristics, VMC should be consulted.
The usage environment dictates the type of elastomer
that should be specified. VMCs standard products are

listed in usually one but sometimes two standard
materials. To meet specifics of temperature, extreme
strength, enhanced damping, chemical resistance and
resistance to ozone and sunlight we can provide many
other materials. With few exceptions, we can mold any
mount in our product line in any material that can be
molded. Our manufacturing process is set up so that
we can produce short run specials sometimes at the
same cost, or with a very slight premium. VMC should
be consulted whenever environment is suspected to
be an issue. We offer here some guidelines to our
most commonly used materials.
Neoprene and Neoprene Blends Good general
purpose black-rubber for sustained operating
temperatures between -40
o
and +180
o
F. Resistant
to splashes of most oils and hydraulic fluid and
other conditions typical of industrial and engine
compartment environments. Our standard material
for most industrial mounts.
VMC Color-coded Neoprene and Blended
Materials Good general purpose rubber for most
moderate service conditions. Particularly favored in the
HVAC industry because the material can be color
coded to indicate mount rating and stiffness. Our stan-
dard in our R/RD line and pads.
Silicone Provides increased operating temperature
range of -60
o
to +300
o
F. Inherently resistant to many
chemicals, with the exception of lubricating oil. Low
outgassing. For this reason it is favored for military and
space applications. Overall, silicone provides greater
dynamic damping than many other materials. It also
can be color coded to indicate load capacity.
VMC Weather-Resistant (WR) Blended Material
Similar to our color-coded neoprene and blended
materials, it offers the same color coding to indicate
load rating. Upper limit on service temperature is
extended to +250
o
F and has greater resistance to sun-
light (UV) ozone, salt water and acids. For this reason it
may be preferred when extreme outdoor conditions
are encountered such as on exposed rooftops in
some locations.
Nitrile Generally a good substitute for our neoprene,
blended and color-coded materials when significant
exposure to oils and hydraulic fluids are present.
EPDM A good substitute for our neoprene, blended
and color-coded materials when extended temperature
range, improved chemical resistance or low-tempera-
ture flexibility is needed.
VMC Extreme High Temperature Silicone Capable
of continuous operation to +485
o
F.
VMC High Damped Silicone Capable of producing
mounts with dynamic damping factors approaching
25% of critical depending on type of input.
Other Specialty Materials Fluorosilicone,
Fluorocarbon, ECO, HNBR, Polyacrylates and natural
rubber to name just a few.
Elastomeric mounts will inherently provide some
degree of dynamic damping. Damping limits response
peaks when a machine momentarily passes through
resonance such as during start-up. It limits ringing due
to shocks and transients. Damping is a property of the
material and also affected by the character of the
dynamic input. It is velocity dependent so high fre-
quency, large displacement inputs will result in propor-
tionally the greatest damping out of a given material.
Damping operates by drawing energy out of the sys-
tem in the form of heat. Damped mounts will warm
with operation. In the extreme case, heavily damped
mounts operated for extended periods of time under
severe conditions or near resonance will overheat. This
will shorten the mounts overall service life. The level of
damping should be appropriate to the application.
Above all else, mounts should not be operated in a
resonance condition for extended periods of time. In
most industrial applications, the moderate amount of
damping provided by our standard materials combined
with operation well above suspension resonance will
provide excellent performance and service life. Certain
military applications necessitate high damping materi-
als in order to control broad-spectrum random vibra-
tion and shock. The use of high damping material must
be combined with good engineering analysis and test-
ing particularly when the suspension natural frequency
must reside within a narrow band. Damping makes the
mount appear stiffer dynamically.

fully captive molded elastomer shock and vibration iso-
lator. Its housings rugged welded steel construction
and fail-safe design make it ideal for severe mobile,
marine, seismic and all-attitude applications. Average
static load ratings will range between 4,000 and
10,000 pounds in all directions. With the use of option-
al internal booster springs, or under special low duty
cycle applications, loading up to 20,000 pounds is
possible. Working deflections are in the .25 to .75 inch
range. This results in good low to mid-frequency range
isolation. The mount may be molded with any of our
standard or custom elastomers to meet specific envi-
ronmental, service life and damping requirements.

FLUSH-TYPE MOUNTS
R/RD Series are elastomeric flush-type mounts that
provide effective vibration control for all types of gener-
al metalworking and production machinery. Typical
applications include air handling units, business
machines, instrument panels and machine tools.
The R/RD Series have ribbed, non-skid bases and may

machinery. No bolting is required under machines that
have no lateral or severe vertical motion. The RP/RDP
versions offer mounting with a pin for inaccessible
bolt holes.
The R/RD Series mounts are embedded in colored
elastomer. This color-coding system permits instant
identification of loading capacities, and prevents instal-
lation errors. The R Series offer deflections to 1/4 and
the RD Series offer deflections to 1/2. Four different
sizes offer a load capacity range of 10 to 4000 lbs. per
mounting offering mounts that may be accurately
selected for the equipment weight.

APPLICATIONS
Static load range from 7-40 lbs. offers several solu-
tions for low load applications.
Large deflection capability can dramatically reduce
abrupt shock impacts as high as 30g.
Two different elastomer unit options meet operating
temperature requirements for even the most
extreme conditions.
Elastomeric mounts resist oils, ozone and most
solvents providing optimum resilience in challeng-
ing conditions.
Central cores accept common screws offering
simple installation.
LARGE DEFLECTION MOUNTS
LD Series are mid-frequency isolators with a large
deflection capability that provides both shock and
vibration protection for a variety of stationary applica-
tions. These mounts can attenuate a 15g, 11-millisec-
ond shock to 10g; and a 30g, 11-millisecond shock to
16g. The LD Series mounts are ideal for use in applica-
tions where vibration and shock are a concern elec-
tronic equipment, camera systems and computers.
Two different elastomeric element types are available in
the LD Series. The standard elastomer that offers
operating temperatures of -20
o
F to +180
o
F provides
effective isolation in most applications. The optional
polybutadiene version is used for situations when oper-
ating temperatures may drop as low as -65

F. Both
versions are excellent when high amplitude vibration
inputs are expected or large shock deflections are
needed. Both versions also resist oils, ozone and
most solvents providing optimum resilience in
difficult conditions.
No special tools are required for installation. The cen-
tral cores are tapped to accept common screws. Note
that these mounts are not inherently failsafe. These iso-
lated systems do require suitable means of restraint.

SERIES
APPLICATIONS
Load ranges up to 120 psi provide isolation under
a wide range of heavy load applications.
Compressed cork centers bonded between two
layers of waffle-shaped elastomer offer superior
sound attenuation and vibration isolation.
Waffle-shaped outer pads offer exceptional
gripping and require no bolting or cementing in
most applications.
Wide range of product sizes and a steel plate
option provide a variety of pad choices to meet
specific requirements.
Cork and elastomeric construction resists oils,
water and acids normally encountered in commer-
cial and industrial applications.
CORK & WAFFLE EMBOSSED MOUNTING PADS
Cork-Rib Mounts are close-grained cork pads that pro-
vide the highest degree of sound attenuation and
vibration isolation attainable in a pad-type mount. The
Cork-Rib Pads are very effective in heavy load situa-
tions processing equipment, hammers, punch press-
es and textile machinery.
Cork-Rib Pads consist of 1/2 thick compressed cork
centers bonded between two layers of 1/4 thick waf-
fle-shaped elastomer. Two types are available Cork-
Rib Pads and Cork-Rib Flex-Plates. Cork-Rib Pads are
1 thick and are available in sheets of 24 x 36, 18 x
36 and 18 x 18. Smaller pads are also available.
Cork-Rib Flex-Plates are for use in applications where
concentrated loads exceed a maximum bearing of 120
psi. The Flex-Plates add a load-spreading steel plate
between the elastomeric waffle layer and the cork cen-
ter. The strongest Flex-Plate design can handle 4800
lbs. of static load.
Cork-Rib Pads offer exceptional gripping qualities
eliminating the need for bolting or cementing pads to
the equipment or to the floor. The Flex-Plate types also
offer bolt holes and isolation washers for extra security,
or extra thick steel plates with counter-bored holes for
self-leveling machinery. All Cork-Rib mountings resist
the oils, water and acids normally encountered in com-
mercial and industrial applications.

Static load range of 35-4000 lbs. offers solutions
for a wide range of suspended equipment.
Choice of deflection provides accurate selection of
mounts based on equipment requirements.
Hanger capacities can be mixed to accommodate
equipment with uneven weight distribution.
Elastomer-coated mounts are color-coded for
easy identification.
Steel housing provides durability and stability.
ELASTOMERIC HANGERS
RH/RHD Series elastomeric isolation hangers offer cost
effective solutions for the isolation of suspended equip-
ment. These hangers are designed to solve high fre-
quency attenuation problems in a protected space or
radiating from that space to surrounding locations.
These isolators are ideal for suspended piping, duct-
work, air handling units, and HVAC equipment.
The equipment and piping are supported from vibration
hangers consisting of a steel box with an internal elas-
tomeric element. The RH Series offer deflections to
1/4 and the RHD Series offer deflections to 1/2. Four
different sizes provide load capacity ranges from 10 to
4000 lbs. offering accurate hanger selection even for
units with unequal weight distribution.
The RH/RHD Series isolation elements are molded of
color-coded elastomer permitting instant identification
of loading capacities. These units are molded with an
integral bushing to prevent the elastomeric elements
from coming in contact with the isolator housings. All
elements are molded in durometers or hardness to
match actual assigned loads.
