"If the concept of nation can in any way be defined unambiguously, it certainly cannot be stated in terms of empirical qualities
common to those who count as members of the nation. In the sense of those using the term at a given time, the concept
undoubtedly means, above all, that one may exact from certain group of men a specific sentiment of solidarity in the face of other
groups. Thus, the concept (of nation) belongs in the sphere of values. Yet, there is no agreement on how these groups should be
delimited or about what concreted action should result from such solidarity. Max Weber

The nation is a large, vertically integrated and territorially mobile group, featuring common citizenship rights and collective
sentiment together with one (or more) common characteristic(s) which differentiates its members from those of similar groups
with whom they stand in relations of alliance or conflict. Anthony Smith

"Nations, like narratives, lose their origins in the myths of time and only fully realize their horizons in the minds eye. Such an ima
ge of the nationor narration might seem impossibly romantic and excessively metaphorical, but it is from those traditions
of political thought and literary language that the nation emerges as a powerful historical idea in the west. An idea whose cultural
compulsion lies in the impossible unity of the nation as a symbolic force." Homi Bhabha

I propose the following definition of the nation: it is an imagined political community, and imagined as both inherently limited and
sovereign. Benedict Anderson

The meaning of the term nation . . . changed from designating a pre-political entity to something that was supposed to play a
constitutive role in defining the political identity of the citizens within a democratic polity. . . . The nation of citizens does not
derive its identity from common ethnic and cultural properties but rather from the praxis of citizens who actively exercise their civil
rights. Jrgen Habermas

This course investigates the complexity of our global interconnectedness by probing the
emergence of modern nations. It will analyze their modes of imagination and self-
identification, as well as the competing political and economic expressions of national
sovereignty in a globalizing world.
