Introduction and problem description / definition

We were asked to construct a 3D solid model of the object shown in the lab manual using NX. Once the
model was complete we were asked to perform analysis of the model and find out various information
including; the mass, centroid, and moments of inertia about the centroid.

Methodology and/or Approach
The first step of constructing the model was to create the horizontal base of the object. To do this, first
a rectangle was made with dimensions 74 by 84mm. Once the rectangle was made, an arc was made at
the top of the rectangle with a radius of 38. Once the arc was completed, the sketch was then extruded
by 16, creating the base of the model.
The second step was to create the cylinder shaped part that is attached to the base of the model. First, a
circle was drawn with radius of 32mm, with the radius starting from the point on the center of the arc
made in the previous step. This circle was then extruded by 25mm, and the Boolean operator unite
was used to unite the cylinder to the base making them one body. Another circle was then drawn on the
top of the cylinder, with radius 23 also starting from the center point of the arc made in the first step.
This circle was then extruded by a value of 22mm, and using the Boolean operator subtract a hole was
made through the cylinder and the base of the model as required.
The third step was to create the vertical base of the object. To do this the view was first aligned to right
view and a second rectangle was made this time with dimensions 16 by 83mm, starting from the edge
of the horizontal base and angled at a 60 degree angle from the horizontal. This rectangle was then
extruded by a value of -74mm. The view was now changed to front view and each side of the extruded
rectangle, an arc was made going upwards with a radius of 10mm, starting from each upper corner of
the edge of the extruded rectangle. Two straight lines were then drawn to connect the two curves, and
then both lines and curves were extruded by a value of 16mm. Next, two circles were drawn with a
radius of 8mm, each starting from the midpoint of each of the previously drawn curves. These circles
were then extruded by a value of -16m and using the Boolean operator subtract two holes were
created on each side of the vertical base as shown in lab manual. Once the vertical base was complete
using the Boolean operator unite the vertical and horizontal bases were united with each other to
form one body. Once the two bodies were united the edge blend feature was used to round the corners
were the arcs intersected with the extruded rectangle, the radius used for each edge blend was 6.5mm.
The final step was to create the triangular part in the center of the model. First a new axis was created
on the face of the cylinder, a vertical line was then drawn positioned at the center of face of the cylinder
with height of 22mm. Another three lines were then drawn in order to create the triangular shape.
Once this shape was created it was then extruded from -8mm to 8mm giving the triangular shape a total
thickness of 16mm. Using the Boolean operator unite the triangular object was now united to the rest of
the model forming one solid model.
Once the model was complete the material properties option under the tools menu was used to
select the material this model would be made of. The material selected was steal, and once this was
selected using the measure bodies option in the analysis menu various properties of the model could
be extracted and displayed.
Results
After performing analysis the mass of the model was determined to be 2.721214975 KG. The centroids
were determined to be 69.896111700, -5.847261644, -0.000. The moments of inertia about the centroid
were determined to be; 4209.228226493, 7574.071396486, 9193.790802506.
