courses. Students will be counted absent from class meetings missed, beginning with the first
official day of classes. Students, whether present or absent, are responsible for all material
presented or assigned for a course and will be held accountable for such materials in the
determination of course grades. In the case of online and hybrid courses, attendance will be
determined in terms of participation, as described in the course syllabus.

Absence from 25 percent of scheduled lecture and/or laboratory meetings will be taken as
evidence that a student does not intend to complete the course, and the student will be withdrawn

from the course with a grade of W. The instructor may reinstate the student if satisfied that the
student will resume regular attendance and will complete the course. If the students 25 percent
absences are reached after the official drop date, the instructor may assign a W, if the student is
passing and requests to be withdrawn. However, if a student who is not passing reaches the 25
percent point after the official drop date, the student will receive an F. In extenuating
circumstances, the instructor may assign a W to a student who is not passing.

Each absence will count toward attendance requirements in each course.

Students will be permitted to make up class work and assignments missed due to absences
caused by (1) authorized participation in official College functions, (2) personal illness, (3) an
illness or a death in the immediate family, or (4) the observance of a religious holy day. Also, the
instructor has the prerogative of determining whether a student may make up work missed due to
absences for other reasons. It is the students responsibility to inform the instructor of the reason
for an absence and to do so in a timely fashion.

Student Absences on Religious Holy Days

McLennan Community College shall excuse a student from attending classes or other required
activities including examinations for the observance of a religious holy day, including travel for
that purpose. Students are required to file a written request with each instructor for an excused
absence. A student whose absence is excused for this observance may not be penalized for that
absence and shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment from which the
student is excused within a reasonable time after the absence. Religious holy day means a holy
day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under the
Texas Tax Code. McLennan Community College may not excuse absences for religious holy
days which may interfere with patient care.

Note: Students interested in seeing the class attendance policy in its entirety should check the
Highlander Guide or the MCC policy manual.

General Procedures:

We will be covering about one chapter per week. On a two-day section, MW
or TTh, there will be a lecture on the chapter(s) on the first class day then we will
take questions and do labs. The second class day will be to finish up questions
and labs and start the next chapter. On a one day section, we will do the same
things on the one class day.

We will use a removable drive in the PCs so that we may make changes to the
system without affecting other classes using the machines, and many of the labs
will use Class hardware. You will work as part of a group for some of the
exercises, and will be expected to do your share of the work.
You will keep an Engineering Notebook/Journal as a 2" loose-leaf binder.
On the front cover you need to write a title of "Engineering Notebook", and your
name. In the book you will keep handouts from the class, notes, and other
materials you may gather as part of the course. You will be allowed to use ONLY
this notebook when you take your chapter tests. The Activities will be kept in a
separated section of the notebook with the pages labeled as indicated below.
The Activities need to be in numerical order. You will need a set of index pages
to separate the various sections.
CISCO DISCOVERY 2
ITCC 1311 50

11

You should read the chapter and do the Interactive and Packet Tracer
Activities on the CD before the day we are scheduled for the lecture. That way,
the material will not be new and it will make it twice as easy to absorb the new
material.

You need to go over the material and do the "Check Your Understanding"
questions at the end of the chapter before the second day of the chapter (Check
your answers with the ones at the back of the book). You should make notes in
your Engineering Notebook about the exercises. You will be able to use the
Engineering Notebook when you take the Chapter Tests. Some of the chapters
have a lot of Interactive labs, and you may need to work on them over a period of
several days. The LABS should be done before the first day of the next chapter.
The files you need for the Packet Tracer and Interactive activities are on
the CD that came with your book, and on Blackboard. You need to do the
activity and print out the last page of the exercise using PRINTKEY and put it in a
separate section of your Engineering Notebook. Each page will be labeled with
the lab number in the upper right corner of the page as viewed when the
notebook is read. That is, whether the page is printed in portrait or landscape
orientation, the label will be in the same visual location - the upper right corner.

The Activity should be labeled in the form "Activity (1.2.3)", with the
numbers being the activity number from the text. These will occasionally be
checked and your progress noted. You need to complete these activities by the
first day of the next week's class . (some sections will have one class a week and
some will have two classes a week {same number of hours, tho}).
NOTE: Except for the exercises that specifically introduce the GUI interface and
operations, you should use the CLI - Command Line Interface - to set up the
Cisco devices. 1.) you can't do everything with the GUI. 2.) The certification test
and the final use the CLI. You can set up the PCs and Linksys multifunction
device with the GUIs.
CISCO DISCOVERY 2
ITCC 1311 50

12

GRADING
Grades will be weighted as follows:

30% - Average of Module Exams (Curved. Take good notes to use on the exams to stay on the
high part of the curve) (Engineering notebook allowed)\
30% - Final Comprehensive Module Exam (NO Engineering notebook, notes, etc. allowed)
10% - Skills Exam
15% - ACTIVITIES - Interactive and Packet Tracer.
15% - LABS - percentage of labs finished (Should be 100% done)
EXTRA CREDIT:

There is a test called the CCENT that covers the material in the first 2 Discovery
courses. If you take and pass the test, you will get an "A" for this course. There
is a "Coupon Test" that you will take as a practice final exam. If you pass the
coupon test at a certain level, you will get a coupon for a discounted test.

MODULE TESTS

Once a chapter has been covered, the module test will be turned on.
You must take the test in the MicroLab - be sure to sign in.
Tests not taken in the MicroLab will not count. Print out the test results and give the printout to
the Lab Instructor.
The tests must be taken within 7 days of the initial activation. (By the next lab class day, actually
- usually 7 days, but might be longer.) Points will be deducted if you fall behind on the tests.
Tests will be extended for a maximum of 7 more days upon request. ALL tests must be taken by
the time of the final exam.
You may use ONLY the material in your ENGINEERING NOTEBOOK when taking the test.
The Tests are TIMED, so don't dally. Unlike the CCNA test, you CAN go back in the test, so if you
get stuck on a question, move on and come back when you finish.
CISCO FORBIDS YOU TO COPY OR PRINT OUT THE QUESTIONS ON THE TEST!
Once you start a test, you may not open any other tab or window.
You may not use the calculator or any other device or program on any question.
Catalog General ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students, and each instructor should maintain a
complete record of attendance for the entire length of each course. Students will be counted absent
from class meetings missed, beginning with the first official day of classes. Students, whether present or
absent, are responsible for all material presented or assigned for a course and will be held accountable
for such materials in the determination of course grades.

Absence from 25 percent of scheduled lecture and/or laboratory meetings will be taken as evidence that
a student does not intend to complete the course. Unless an instructor has reason to believe the student
will complete the course, the student will be withdrawn from the course with a grade of W. The instructor
may reinstate the student if satisfied that the student will resume regular attendance and will complete
the course.

If the students 25 percent absences are reached after the official drop date, the instructor may assign a
W, if the student is passing and requests to be withdrawn. However, if a student who is not passing
reaches the 25 percent point after the official drop date, the student will receive an F.
In extenuating circumstance, the instructor may assign a W to a student who is not passing.

Each absence (excused or unexcused) will count toward attendance requirements in each course.

14

ATTENDANCE:
Try not to miss any classes - Material in one class builds on material from
previous classes; missing a class may make it difficult to pick up the material in
the following classes. Tardies will count as 1/2 absence. It is the student's
responsibility to inform the instructor that he/she arrived after the roll was
called/collected. If there is some unusual circumstances let me know and we
may be able to work something out.
