Task 1B- Analyses of magazine contents page

Masthead- Even though

the masthead is quite
small, it is very noticeable.
This is because it is in a
bright red font and has a
white border around it
against a black
background. This makes it
stand out against all the
other text such as the sub-
headings.
Main Image- The main
image contains a model
(girl) who is pointing at a
tour bus. This is suitable
as it is a music magazine
and the article under the
image is called Touring
Special. The model is
using direct address
which makes the
audience connect with
her.
Advert- Many magazines have
advertisements on the contents page.
They are usually for a magazine
subscription, like this one or for a new
album for a band the magazine is
promoting, which is synergy.
Page numbers- There are
page numbers both in the
short article under the
main image and on the
left-hand side column. This
is so people can easily get
to the article they want
and go to certain sections
such as the news section
(p12 and 16) easily without
having to go through every
page.
Border around image- There is
a white border around the
main image so that it stands
out against a dark background.
This is helpful as you can you
easily see the difference
between the picture and the
background.

featured in the magazine-
We know that the main
image and the article are
related because the sub-
heading says Touring and
the image shows a tour bus.
Dateline- The dateline is at the top
of the page, under the masthead, so
it can easily be seen. However, the
issue number is not there, it usually
is.
Target audience- We know
from the contents page that
the target audience for this
magazine is varied. This is
because there are many
artists but from different
genres, for example Jay-z who
mainly focuses on hip-hop
and Paramore who are more
indie rock. From this edition,
we can see that the magazine
is suitable for all music types.
Sub-Headings- The contents
page has many sub-headings
to show the separate sections
of the magazine, for example,
Reviews. There is also a sub-
heading under the main
image.
Shot type- The shot type used
for this image is medium long.
This is because you can see the
top half of the model, you cant
see below her waist. The shot
type used for he images in the
advert is a close-up as you can
only see his face.
Font types- The font used
throughout the page is the same, it
only varies on size to shows that the
house style is the same and to give
continuity.
Columns - The contents page uses three
separate columns, however, they are not
equal size. The middle column is much
larger as it has the most information. This
has broken away from codes and
conventions as normally the columns
would be equal size or the page number
would be the biggest.
