Russia and China high speed rail line across Mongolia project MoU signed
An MoU for a high speed rail line project linking the capitals of Russia and China was signed by the
two nations during a visit to Moscow by the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of
China, Li Keqiang. The new passenger train project would make a journey along the length of the
Trans-Siberian railway possible in two days. It currently takes six days to travel from Beijing to
Moscow by rail. It is estimated that the 7,000 km high speed rail line would cost 230 billion USD to
complete. It would be three times longer than the world's longest high speed railway line from Beijing
to Guangzhou (2,298km). Chinese media reports that the high speed rail line will be laid through
Mongolia. The large construction project is expected to be a symbol of the two countries bilateral
cooperation. Beijing Times reported that if the project's funding is resolved without any restrictions,
the high speed rail line linking China and Russia will be completed in five years. Chinese CCTV said
that China also submitted a bid to Russia to build an 803 km rail line from Moscow to the Tatar
Republic of Russia.

Asian ministers discuss how to tackle freshwater shortage
With concerns over future shortages of freshwater, ministers and water experts from Asia gathered in
Korea to discuss how to tackle the situation. When it comes to water, nobody can say they are 100
percent safe while the demand for freshwater is increasing, the supply is becoming uncertain.
According to a projection by the United Nations, half of the countries around the world will face a
water scarcity by 2025. The problem is especially acute in Asia, which is facing a rapid increase of
population and urbanization. With climate change expected to worsen the situation, experts warn that
shortages of freshwater could lead to diverse problems such as impaired food production, insecurity
of livelihood, migration within and across borders, and economic and geopolitical tensions. At the
event were ministers and vice ministers from Thailand, Nepal, Mongolia, Vietnam and Uzbekistan as
well as experts from international organizations such as the ADB and UNESCO.
They exchanged their ideas and experiences on how they are practicing freshwater policies, ranging
from supply and hygiene to facilities for water resources and financing. They aim at finding more
realistic solutions for water-related issues and setting up a system for cooperation. Mongolia, whose
land is mostly desert and two thirds of the water resource flow out to neighboring countries, also sees
the stable supply of freshwater as the most pending issue. K-water and the ADB are currently
discussing setting up an information system on water resources.

Japanese Shares Swing After Biggest Rally Since June 2013
Japanese shares swung between gains and losses after the Topix index posted its biggest rally in
more than a year yesterday. Toyota Motor Corp., the worlds biggest carmaker, provided the most
support to the Topix (TPX) while wireless-carrier SoftBank Corp. was the largest drag. Japan Steel

loss of 16 billion yen ($150 million) caused by a problem with parts for wind-power generators. Lixil
Group Corp., which makes toilets and other fixtures, added 2.1 percent. The Topix was little changed
at 1,223.83 as of 9:35 a.m. in Tokyo after rising and falling as much as 0.3 percent. The measure
jumped 4 percent yesterday, the most since June 2013, after slumping 12 percent the previous three
weeks. The Nikkei 225 slid 0.4 percent to 15,053.74 today, while the yen gained 0.1 percent to
106.82 per dollar. U.S. shares climbed for a third day yesterday, halting a rout in the worlds biggest
